  • The Bong Sau is a very effective technique in Wing Chun that can be used to get out of close range neck grabs. That is if you're late. If you're early, the Tan-Sau works much better as we've seen in the previous video. Let's discuss!

Also just for reference, guys who have been in street fights know, nobody ever throws the jab in a street fight... EVER. Most martial arts channels primarily teach defense against the jab when in a real fight you will NEVER see a jab. Rarely a kick... and never a high kick. People only go for knockout blows or the slam or chokehold. So i like that this channel takes into account the things that happen in real fights. 90% of martial arts channels are not taught by guys who have REAL fight experience. I have been in a LOT of real fights, growing up in Miami, having a take nothing attitude, and then doing club security for a living for the last several years. Even in the military i fought superiors cause i couldn't let people talk to me any kind of way due to rank lol. This is the first channel i found that is very aligned with my real life fight experiences.

At the Syracuse Martial Arts Academy I have two awesome Wing Chun / Jeet Kune Do sifus plus the advanced students who also are awesome instructors. My favorite advanced student instructor reminds me exactly of you in his teaching style and mannerisms. He really knows his stuff and has a fast mind similar to you. You are my most trusted online source for Wing Chun knowledge and also present in a way that holds my attention.

Good instruction. For those wondering how someone might get around the tan sau, it usually occurs from someone "pummeling" or working their hands to the inside. I've actually seen this done frequently at Wing Chun schools in Hong Kong during sparring as it is a great way to control an opponent's head, and therefore their balance. If you're familiar with other styles then this will make sense, as Muay Thai practitioners often get to either the famous double neck grab or grip the neck with one hand and around the upper arm with the other (also seen in Judo, wrestling, etc.). You won't have much time to fire off that first punch to the side, as anyone experienced is going to pull the elbow in fast to break your posture, close distance, and create a frame with the elbow, but clamping the elbow with the same side arm while getting the inside/centerline position with your rear hand should always be an option. Just remember what Adam said about the opponent's rear hand :)

Nice!!! finally somebody with common sense ! exactly, your attacker has two arms and be expected to get hit by the other fist, could be an uppercut another swing or may try to grab with both hands and followed by a knee and or a hammer fist in the back of your head .Salutes.

Question Mr. Chan? If the attacker is powering his way through the tan or position, why not just change your position and allow the energy to pass by while he is already off balance, then you can easily beat him at will or with no resistance?

It looks like bong sao is not practical to defend against punches, because its slower the the other wing chun blocks/parries, but it is very practical against grabs. Personally in all the fights i been in i had most guys throw hook punches or go low and try to scoop me off the ground. So those are the two things u should prepare for the most to those who haven't been in a lot of real fights.

Bong Sao is a niche technique, you use it when someone is seriously pressuring into ur center.
It's just not your default technique.

Jkd has the trapping of wingchun but has a more open stance borrowed from fencing, there is more emphasis on footwork borrowing a lot from boxing including the hook punch it has some throws from judo and limited ground game like biting gouging and anything that might let you stand back up. Oh and because of the more bladed stance it allows for and teaches the side kick, the round house is also added the cross kick (front stomp to the knee). In a book I read by Bruce Lee he said, if you are a boxer or wrestler etc then keep doing those things, use JKD just to round out your game.
Sorry if I’ve rambled, I’m a bit of a Bruce fan lol

    • @dogguyful

@Rex Bayogna OK it doesn't matter, it all depends on mastery of the style-you can beat one style against the other depending on many factors like opponent's size, strength.....

Self proclaimed master. You will notice if you see the guys he fights, and if you listen to interviews with Xu XiaoDong, that these guys are not recognized by their martial arts styles as masters of anything. They are just delusional guys who make money by themselves teaching their gullible students. They are not the master of any lineage
