Dude, this was totally RAD. Great job with this series of vids! Looking forward to seeing more of your stuff for sure.
LGR sup, love your reviews.
This was really well researched and had a lot of interesting facts in it I was not aware of. I used to play most of these games as a kid but never really realized how groundbreaking they were.
Hard drivin, chase hq and outrun were the best games. Played them all for hours on end.
shame on you that you have missed the lotus games! :D
Watching this in 2020!
It's awesome to see the high level of quality even in your first videos!
I have been playing video games for waaaaay too long. I remember that very first game you mentioned in this video and used to play it quite regularly as well as most if not all of these early racers. Thanks for the memories!
Cool review. Love seeing these old classic games and the history behind them.
This was the first Metal Jesus video I ever watched, years ago! So fun to watch it again.
Great review, I've played almost all of those I just didn't remember until seeing your video. Thanks for the stroll down memory lane.
So glad you featured Super Sprint! It's the reason I was hunting down videos about classic arcade racing games. Supr Off Road is also badass. Ty!
Wonderful video man, I was born in the 90's so I didn't get to experience the racing games of the very first generation of consoles but it's still really fun to see how my favourite gaming genre has evolved from very simple but honest games to games with mind-blowing graphics and hundreds of cars to choose from.
hehehe...I remember playing Hard Driving in the late 90's at this arcade. I didn't really know what the hell was going on.
Top Gear on the SNES was fucken SWEET! Played the shit outta that game.
thank you. you make come back to my 14 years , with all those titles. im already a fan of out run. i played almost all those titles , specialy out run , chase hq , hard drivin (very very very hard game ) and when younger 10 years old pole position and hang on. thank you again.
Thank you very much for making videos like these. It's really good and informative; and brings up some nostalgia to my heart... Thank you very much dude!!! Kind regards from Argentina
Buggy Boy!! I love to see all of these games and how they've developed over time. Especially since I have got to play the majority of them as they have been released. Awesome video here.
I loved!!! Test drive!! Many many hours!
Hard Drivin is my favorite in this video. It actually helped me later on in life on learning how to use a manual transmission car during shifting!
Thank you for the old good memories man, great work.
Oh yeah! So glad you mentioned RC Pro AM. That was one of the first racing games I ever played and LOVED it.
I played Pole Position II for the Atari 7800 and was probably the first I ever owned and played. I hadn't mastered the art of using the high and low gears to get through the turns as a kid, but it was always fun!
There was another racing game similar to RC Pro AM that had similar isometric graphics but also had a built-in track editor. I'm positive it was for the NES. Ring any bells?
YESSSS!!!! TEST DRIVE!!!!!! I remember that I always drove the Lotus, but thats about it. Thanks for jogging those memories man!
I remember as a kid walking down to 7/11 and getting a slurpee and playing RoadBlaster's with the change. It was a ritual I kinda miss now. It's so cool to see someone bring the game up in a video. Great channel :)
Excellent round-up, many of my favourites there. It's amazing how many you forget. Did notice one of my favourite arcade / Atari 8-bit racers was missing - Sega's Up N' Down, that was a pretty fun one from the early/mid 80's, but with 2,500 racers made you did a real good job to squeeze so many into less than 15 mins. Off to watch part 2!
Metal Jesus does indeed rock. Especially if you remember old racing games when they were new and shiny.
just wanted to say that this episode is how i found your channel. Saw all your episodes since and am very thankful of your "two cents" on the various systems. I am a NEW collector myself, and really love the reviews / insights. Idk what you value in a youtube comment, but seriously, I appreciate the time you have spent on 'collectibles', OH and gamer foods :P lol I pray and wish the best for you and your hobbies and life! - sound over the top, may be, but I really have appreciated the info ty.
great video! racing games are one of my favorites.
Hard/Race Drivin' was an amazing game for it's time. Still love playing that.
I just took a walk down memory lane...could say I had a picnic with this compilation :D Thumbs up!
I came here because I was curious as to what the first racing game to utilize missiles was. I'm glad you provided that information.
Great one guy. All those games was so simple and exciting. I use to expend a lot of time plating most of racing games for pc. This vídeo is a great resource about the very early hystoric of racing games!
You know I thought I had a pretty good memory but man when Indy 500 came on I had a flash back to playing this game as a very young kid and my mom and I remember it being hard!!! Thanks for the memory and the video!!
Awww man surprised Super Off Road was not one of your faves :D. Great vid!
Man, your video is very cool. Congratulations!
Great video MJ, brilliant!!!
make part 3 please ... I was see your video 9 years ago.. bring me nostalgia..
Love driving games my fave genre! Especially retro ♥ thanks for this video
WOW!! RC PRO AM, I had that game and it was awesome. Going to try and find it now...
thanks for response. I wasn't complaining I was just curious. I watch your shows regularly. Keep up the good work.
+Greg Fellner No worries... it's hard to tell the tone of a question on the inter webs...but I wanted to let you know in case you were waiting for a response from me :)
I played pole position on the original Playstation back in 2017 on the arcade classics collection for ps1 and its still a blast.
i was very enthusiastic about racing games, more of this i play, more of this i never know and i never play and about it i really proud what i always can see more of him
Awesome Jesus. As a 80s arcade kid, loved your mention of my fav racing game Turbo and mention of Commodre 64 which i played a crap out of. Your series is great!
I'm so glad you mentioned Re-Volt. I LOVED that game as a kid playing against my bros at night.
I remember Hard Drivin, part of why I went to the arcades all the time, it was one of the only racing games at the time with an actual manual transmission, not a bad way to learn how to drive before getting a drivers permit.
Stunt Car Racer, Powerdrift & Continental Circus on the C64 are all worth a look. Great vid!
brilliant video some very interesting points
Lotus Turbo Challenge 2 = Awesome, that intro music ooooh baby! :)
That last game I was searching for forever, I forgot the name! Thanks for posting!
i already subscribed.metal jesus you rock man X-D yeah!!awesome video.
You are friggin awesome!!! Thx for this vid!!!!
I saw the excite bike and my jaw just dropped! So many memories about this game... it actually feels like i've played this game yesterday...
Very well produced and written series.
That was awesome. I have played a few of those over the years.
Metal Jesus Rocks! Thanks for this
Cool, seen some games that I used to play in my childhood. Very cool. Thank you
you just have to mention street rod from 1989 for dos. One of the the most underrated racing games ever.
It had the tuning car mechanic that grand turismo had but 8 years before they did it and in the end you got to battle the coolest guy in town in his corvette for pinkslips wich obviosuly included his girl.
Really cool game that i played alot growing up.
yeah man! cool game
Some games that I didn't see mentioned that I would have included are the Micro Machine series, and Road Rash series for this video. Micro Machines developed by codemasters was crazy fun on the Genesis to race your buddies and just ram them into obstacles. Road Rash was incredibly fun and popular wacking each other with chains and kicking into cars and trees. Another I didn't see mentioned on the videos (didn't finish the second one cause my internet went dead slow) was Carmageddon. This game really influenced the violence in racing games where you just try to destroy all the other cars on the track and was very influential at the time. Otherwise great list and it is refreshing to hear someone not trying too hard like most video game commentators at being funny and quirky, making me want to punch their face through my screen. And you are a metalhead which is a big plus!
Test Drive II: The Duel on Genesis was amazing when I was a kid. Felt like I was really driving a car. Still love it, probably the best port of the Test Drive 1 and 2 games.
I loved Indy 500 and Super Sprint. I think while simple they are still fun to play today with friends. I've played Indy 500 not even that long ago with a friend on my Atari 7800. There's a "tag" like mode in it that is very fun.
Killer History of Racing Games! My First was "Night Driver", I would have missed the first one, (thanks for the Education on that... Yes you rock). You do not appear to be old enough to have played them back then, (... maybe I am just old and confused?... it happens...) you nailed it so far, am going on to part 2...
Sluggo
Microprose F1GP (1991) featured car damage. the F1GP series are the most playable F1 simulators I have played and still hold up well today. Grand Prix in 1988 was pretty good too. And Grand Prix Legends by Sierra (1998) was incredible. You need a steering wheel and pedals though! Anyway, great video bud
My bad, you put Hard Drivin' at the end of this one, good job, thanks for including it!
Test Drive looks so similar to Grand Prix Circuit, a PC video game (for DOS) that I was addicted to back in the days... perhaps it is a port or a previous version. This was one of my favorite ones, but of course I can't forget TOP GEAR (for SNES) by Kemco, that was truly the best racing video game we played in the early 90s here in Peru. Amazing video, congratulations! can't wait to watch the second part...
Nice list. Hurry up with the next weeks video :D
Cannonball run was one of my favourite movies as a kid also. I preferred the 2nd one as i watched all the time on VHS this is coming from someone who's only 20 now so yeah. But that chimp was legendary .
I have been on this earth for all of these awesome
Pole Position,... I remember me and my brother spending all our money on this game after school then going home asking my Mom for a dollar so we could go back to play some more. What a awesome game. We played so much we used to get extra quarters from the owner cuz he knew they were going into the game anyway. Was a great way to keep us coming back for more.
Oh my god!, hard drivin is my childhood.
Back then in 2009 when i celebrate 7 y.o birthday my parent bought me a bootleg PSP that contain a bunch of atari and nintendo game in it. The only game i play is only hard drivin
I play hard drivin everyday unti the bootleg psp broken
And today i just found the game name again from your video!, i desperatly trying to remember what is the game name until you mention it in this video.
Now ill download atari emulator and start playing that game again!
Thankyou so much
That was Freakin Awesome,I always wondered this same thing!!!
Some great ones for the Amiga 500 , Lotus Esprit Challenge 1,2 & 3 . Test Drive 2 was epic. Super cars 1 and 2 was a game me and my friend spent hours apon hours playing.
On Hard Driving 2 on the Amiga, if you got upto top speed and threw the car into N, it would keep on going and not slow down :D
sadly those amiga emulators so unwelcome to newcomers - dont even know if i want to spend 2-3 hours for search, download and tune controls to launch games you mentioned, but thx fo advice
Great video!
Great stuff!
Excellent video
The first racing game, that had gotten me started to racing games entirely was Top Gear in the SNES. I always played that game a lot at my cousin's house. The soundtrack was amazing for its time. It was a really underrated racing game. Now majority of my videogame collection, is racing games. My favorite racing game franchises of all time are: Gran Turismo, Test Drive, Midnight Club, Ridge Racer, and Need For Speed. Cool video man!
I didn't add Spy Hunter because there isn't a finish line...which was something I was kinda looking for to help cut down the list. But you are right: Total classic!
@wreckless4485 - I do a combination of things: I bought clear plastic boxes from Target that were cheap and then cut holes in the back. I then place them over the consoles with the cords sticking out the back. They come off quick and easy and cost only a couple dollars The other thing I do with some consoles that are in the entertainment center is cover them with nice large cloth napkins. They are dark red and embroidered, so they look nice and are big enough to cover the original XBOX.
Loved those old arcades from the 80s that were enclosed, or least had some car seat with the dash and wheel. Cant imagine how cool they could have made those now, had they kept on improving.
Hard drivin and Chase HQ took many of my quarters back in the day along with Spy Hunter Shinobi, and afterburner, those were my Arcade favorites
Buggy boy man that amazing altho I played it on the Atari st 520 fm along with ammo track and overlander
There was also one that was drag racing, it was a physical top fuel toy car that would pop a wheelie, you sat in a chair and had to shift gears, you miss a gear you could blow the engine, but it had a christmas tree (drag strip starting lights). It was before computers. The first arcade game that was computer was space invaders. and Pong, two players played tennis, it had volumes for up/down paddle control, pong was black and white.
OMG! I played Excitbike at my Grandma's house. It was my favorite along with TMNT.
Great Job!!
Man!! Great work. My jaw dropped like 3 Xs on these games you showed. I totally forgot some of these until you showed them. "Pro Am", and Holy Shit... "Pit Stop was awesome. some of these games now a days dont even support pits. Me and my cousins played Indy 500 all night several times. God bless Atari.. LOL. Played 90% of these. thanks for the hard work you put in on this project. Keep up the good work. OH!, and Cannonball Run put exotic cars on the map for as well.
I'll always remember how cool the atari racing game looked on the film d.a.r.r.y.l, that robot kid film, i was desperate to get one after that, can't remember the game's name but it blew my mind.
RC Pro Am had that one (computer) car that would take off outta nowhere and leave you in the dust,Sometimes I'd get lucky and put him in the oil slick on the way by :) Good ole days.
Top Gear for Super NES by kemco was another classic game with amazing music. My favorites in this series are Top Gear 1 and Top Gear 3000.
you covered most of the games i grew up with but id like to mention also Power Drift on commodore and also Street Rod on PC excellent games and looking forward to part 2
Great memories , there was an arcade down the street from my house and i played all of these games as a kid. We also played all those games from ATARI,SEGA,COLECO,ODYSSEY game consoles , being a kid back then was a lot of fun. I also believe you forgot to mention a few like "Spy Hunter" and "Road Blasters" they were a lot of fun too.
My personal favorites (at least on a 386) were Vette and Cycles.
In Vette, you can choose you car and evade the police like in test drive. But besides the polygonal rendering I like how you can choose your path through San Fransisco to get to the end. Well, that and the ability to pick an excuse to try to get out of a traffic ticket :-)
Cycles was my first motorcycle game (well, besides excite bike). I remember smooth gameplay and a decent first person point of view
Correction, pick you engine and your /opponents/ car. Should see if I can get PvP working through dosbox
Haha, I was thinking Vette too. What a deal trying to play multiplayer over a dial up modem.
YOUR NAME GOES OFF MY SCREEN YOU'RE A FUCKING HERO MAN
Surprisingly very entertaining video. I fully enjoyed it. 5/5 stars - oh I mean, thumbs up
Great video
Great coverage! Maybe you can help me; there was an arcade-only indy car game before pole position where there was a long (rectangular shaped) shadow that seemed to be attached to your car and your rival's car, that went off to the right of the screen. The explosion at the time was very realistic when you collided with the rival car. It looked a lot like pole position from what i remember, as it was the early 80's (possibly late 70's). You are a gaming god if you can help me remember it!
9:10 'one of the first racing games to incorporate the use of weapons to temporary disable competitors' - i thought c64 'racing destruction set' was a bit earlier and it is usually mentioned as ancestor of 'rock'n'roll racing' + i forgot the name of another game from intellivision (probably motocross?) that gave canonical driving and visual style/camera angle
I remember the cockpit of Turbo and the bass sound Inside. Ah, la belle époque!
.
Missing: Racing Destruction Set (commodore 64, a 3D isometric game, with various vehicles) and TRAVERSE USA frome Irem...I play it since....1983. And some others C64 or arcade racing games but, of course, there are a LOT of racing games.
I suppose that your video is talking about the games you have played a long time ago.
Goog attempt to talk about racing games, of course.
Awesome video
ROADKILL on the amiga cd32 was my favourite. Also Vroom on the AtariST, not forgetting REVolt on the PC
Man, metal Jesus has been hitting the. Metal gym since this video
Looks good, ive been playing classics and old consoles from 3-8 and becaue of this i found out the name of one game i fell in love with before Excitebike...... I just fell in love with it. Man you can really see the diff. between the games of before and of the past.... I still play the old ones though.... I feel lighter whenever i play it, so their like Stress relievers
Street rod was always one of my favorites.
Street Rod on the Commodore 64 was a fave of mine from way back lol!
Nigel Mansel's Grand Prix Championship too!
Remember Racing Destruction Set on the C64? Apart from the endless loading, that was my favourite racing game on 8 bit.
