funny how MJR mentioned how many racing games there are and how he wouldn't be able to cover them all so he personally picked some, yet people are crying out that he didn't pick this game or that game, or you forgot this game. SMH, just appreciate his video for what it is.
You're right, really cool video BUT Outrun 2????? Haha
I would think Sega Rally deserves mention....
Sega rally Championship is the best 3d arcade racer ever! Good version on Saturn pixelperfect on PS2
especially sega rally 1 & 3
I literally went into the comments to say that
4 years later only about 18 people agree......
Thank you so much for this racing video game series! My two favorite genres are RPGs and Racing as well. You did an excellent job! Keep rocking Metal Jesus!
Great video thanks for the time you spent to bring us a perspective on the relative games through the years.
Easy to forget that much progress has been made.
I really expected Virtua Racing to be featured. Very groundbreaking, especially on Genesis.
I also thoroughly enjoyed Stunt Race FX on SNES and was amazed at the graphics and physics.
the mario kart double dash, IS MARIO KART 64!!!!!!!!!
I caught that also
Yeah, i caught that too, lol
Another great video about the evolution of racing games and what makes them fun. Thanks Jesus.
I also expected that this list of great historical racing games would have Virtua Racing and/or Virtua Racing Deluxe for the Sega 16-Bit and 32X...
83 people don't worship metal Jesus!!!???? This video rocks
Great drivin music MJR! Awesome choices for your coverage of that slice of game history too. So many cool racers. Id once heard racers are a staple of our gaming diet and i still believe it.
I found this video in my bookmarks dated 9/27/14. Subbed today. Good luck for 200K!
Virtua Racing!?
Really nice video!
But.... : ¿ Micromachines , Road Rash, Destruction Derbi, Pizzaman, MSX racing games, Sonic R,...? great racing games too. :) Thanks for video.
Great job, Metaljesus. Really Awesome. Almost nobody remembers Revolt and it's a really cool game for the time (and even today). Thanks!
What an awesome retrospective.
There were some nice memories in here, and some games I am intrigued to try. Thanks, man. Your videos are awesome!
you forgot a major revolutionary game on PC : "POD" ...back in the days this game played on Pentium 166 Mhz along with the very 1st 3DFX Voodoo card, that game was the 1st PC game to really run at 60 fps with powerfull 3D effects like bilinear filtering...
FrenchFighter01 Planet of Death was AMAZING at the time. Loved that game.
Was that game also under a different name? Powerslide perhaps...
Powerslide was awesome I used to play it on a Pentium 133 Voodoo 2.
No Virtua Racing?
No Cruis'n USA?
Great video, glad to see jet moto mentioned at the end. Tons of fun to play when it came out.
Dude BRAVO for including "Off Road Fury 2!" I remember countless nights spent playing that with the 4-player split screen.
You didn't show GPL and GTL?
destruction derby 1 and 2 are missing in the list to bad but great vid
copyNOTrighted and Flatout 1&2
Thanks so much @MetalJesusRocks for brining back my childhood
Metal Jesus, my saviour, please do more of these history videos!
And what about Sega Rally ????? !!!!
I'm shocked! Okay...well, surprised at least. Granted, I'm probably older (not by much!) than Metal Jesus Howdja Getthat Name.....but not a single mention of Road Rash??? REALLY? I tried many desperate hours to get ANY Papyrus racing games to work on my PC and would honestly rather play ANY of the Road Rash games! For a "social" racing game - nothing beats Road Race except one of the many Mario Kart games. It's criminal not to give Road Rash a nod. It's like naming great first person shooters and not even acknowledging GoldenEye on the N64.
My three cents.
I agree that Road Rash should have definitely at least been an honorable mention.
This video came out 7 years ago! How about "History of Racing Video Games - Part 3" ??? It has been long enough, and enough games have come along since then. Do it Metal Jesus, do it!
Really good video!!
Bring me back in time, many games i have forgot, and wanna try again :D
What about cruisen USA on Nintendo 64
2:18 LOL that's NOT MARIO KART DOUBLE DASH THAT MARIO KART 64 XD XD you fucked up LOL.
he done goofed
great video man keep it up n ya POD ugh hard but took alot of my life as a kid lol
Thanks, enjoyed watching these - great stuff!
Or road rash 2
Vrally 2 was also good for the psx
I was trying to shazam the song and it kept giving me an error till I read in the credits that you actually made this song, awesome job men!
At 2:36 I thought he was gonna say his other passion in life was...Jesus. I panicked there for a second.
2:17 Mario Kart Double Dash? That's Mario Kart 64!!
Read the annotations, dude. It says that he made a mistake.
The game aged so well that he thought it was a gamecube game XD.
Grid....
Ahh thanks for including Re-volt.. that was just amazing. With the track editor and stuff.. cool list man!
once again,top notch video!!
That was Mario Kart 64, not Mario Kart Double Dash (GC), you showed at 02:30.
That's what I was going to say..
VivaMidnight That's What I was going to say..
LeAmmitioneur That's what I was gonna say, too...
Haritha Dhanamina That's what i was going to say, too...
This video brought back so many memories. Thanks for the 'drive' through memory lane.
Thanks man, I really enjoyed the two vids!
It was great to be reminded about 'Chase HQ' again: I remember playing the stand-up cabinet version of that with the steering wheel back in the arcades!
The only ones I think deserved a mention were: the 'Micro Machines ' series on the Megadrive, 'Stunt Racer' on the old Amiga :) and 'Diddy Kong Racing' on the N64; I had a lot of fun playing those with my friends at the time. And the multiplayer cartridge for 'Micro Machines 2' on the Megadrive was awesome! 8 players on 4 controllers ha! x
MetalJesusRocks thank you for including WipEout, it has a special place in my heart too, lots of good memories
"Sled Storm" (Ps1)and "Crash Tag Team Racing"(X-Box) a couple of my personal faves. Enjoyed the video :)
I like even the Need for speed video games!Keep on rocking Metal Jesus!
Split Second is an awesome and unique racing game that if you haven't put it on any lists (which you haven't that I've personally seen) you should definitely check it out. Great stuff Metal Jesus!
Nice video. Thanks for the memories!
Thanks metal Jesus for making this! I'd have to say hydro thunder is my favorite arcade game of all time
very very good video!!! I love it xD
That last music track is amazing and beautiful.
the song at the end was great, its yours? im new to your channel, i really like it and it is really amazing that this videos is more a decade old, thanks for sharing
Metal and gaming that's all I needed to know I subbed :D
LMAO I was JUST thinking that on my Amiga500, along with Test Drive II, I picked up the very 1st game you showed here. I can't begin to tell you how much of an impact that Indy500 game had. I'm STILL envious of its ability to tweak the setup, change tires, and refuel on the fly.
Watched both parts - just wanted to say I really enjoyed it! Brought back some memories too, OMG.
great video on great racing games but shocked not to see Road Rash in the video. the 3do version was amazing and also had a quality soundtrack. still love the video
that song at the end was awesome! great vid too by the way lol.
garry brown I've been trying to find out the name of the song but I can't find it
its The Melody Unit-The best of bread
yeah I asked Metal Jesus on his FB page, really catchy song
Hey there Metal Jesus, love the fact you're into your retro gaming as much as I am, I have a commodore 64 as well but don't get to play on it that often but when I do I'm in my element, I love my C64. Wouldn't ever be without it! and the several hundred games I have. LOL... loved the video and subscribed!
Peace
Well done Metal...great to watch the progression of technology in games ( I also liked Stunt Car Racer...back in the early days) :)
A few more years and we need a part 3
Metal Jesus rocks man!
these vids really hit home!
Great job man
Road Rash 2 & Offroad were my favorites!
That first Indi 500 game, so much good memories. I played that game so much. I would secretly wake up at 6.00 am so I could try 200 lap race before school. It was awesome.
omg, the indy 500 game... ive spend hours and hours on that game tweaking that car...
thanks for the memorycheck in your first part aswell man, those arcade machienes where the bomb back in the days ;)
There has been many favorite racers I've had over the years and you showed several of them. I have a few games that are really special to me before I got into the game industry and had a large part of getting the driving models to feel correct in Virtua Racing for the Sega Saturn. After tuning the driving model to feel accurate but not lose it's arcade feel despite the different cars you could drive.
I really had put a lot of thought into it as I used to race autocross courses on the weekend if a meet was local. Having a old (and wildly modified Triumph Spitfire 1500). For further research during the testing and tuning at Time Warner Interactive, we had the original arcade game but also had some fun showing some of the development team the major difference between their Toyota front wheel drive commuter beater and how much physics can change between my old Triumph which was rear wheel drive and a far lower center of gravity.
Before I got my hands on the driving mechanics with added cars. They really didn't have that "connected" feeling so I had gave a few others a ride and knew that changes had to be made.
I am a huge fan of arcade racing games and sometimes I had spent most of my down time on R.C. Pro AM on the NES and adored the simple fun of it all. Daytona USA has a permanent position on my Xbox 360 along with Out Run HD (which is pretty much a port of Out Run 2006) but after having my house burglarized, I lost most all of my game collection that was from my classics up to all of my PS2 library. My Saturn consoles were taken along with the imports that of which the classic 2D home port of the arcade original. It was my personal favorite of all the games that I had almost to what could be considered a guilty pleasure.
One series came along when I had gotten my first Xbox 360 system which has always had deep roots from ages ago and this game had become an obsession for me. It was like a gift to car lovers of all ages and not a bad game if you have the right people playing with you online
Test Drive Unlimited! The first time I've seen such attention to detail on car models both inside and out, proper engine sounds and it was absolute glory for me to just drive these cars (which still have a bit of an arcade feel but between front wheel drive and rear wheel drive was clearly present but it wasn't perfect by any means. I actually liked it that way. Plus being able to drive around wherever you want with whatever you choose.
There are race objectives of course and other tasks to earn money within the game and buy larger homes for more places to keep your car collection. This game has a small cult following and it did get a sequel which added some annoying license tests which you must pass to continue on in the game.
Test Drive Unlimited 2 wasn't as well received and rated despite some major overhauling of the games engine and added off road racing but only with a small selection of SUV's I had gotten every bit of DLC for the game hoping for a nice. Selection of pickup trucks but that never came to be.
Other advancements over the original game was true metallic texture in metallic paint jobs. Car model details and other neat features really made it a decent game but hard to recommend over much more engaging titles that keep looking and getting better with each console generation.
Mario Kart 8 is one that I recommend to everyone. It's simply beautiful to see in motion and your replay can be uploaded directly to UA-cam.
Driving games are one of my guilty pleasures in life. You can drive like a madman and not have to worry about gas money!
Great video for those who never had been exposed to early game systems and still some great picks from newer game consoles. On a side note, I did get a chance to play the full on Ridge Racer experience. The hard part? The Miata used in the game is right hand drive. That really messed me up!
Rock on
Very well put together video. Nice music at the end. Ps. Gotta laugh at annoying peeps who say "what about...game...etc."
WOAH! Nobody EVER mentions Rollcage Stage II! I'm impressed sir!
I really like your channel! greetings from germany ;)
Great list; I was noticing that I have almost every game you mentioned, and you gave me a few to look for, so thanks! I also agree on the simulator vs fun issue. I can appreciate those who want the simulations, but I want fun all day. It's got to be fun.
Good video, lots of memories. I liked Monster Truck Madness.
This video made me think about how my dad loved the old game systems. He doesnt play anymore because he says that it is too realistic nowadays. This video was the history of classic games that my dad used to play and grow up with.
One of my personal favorite racing games is Split/Second, released in 2010 for the HD consoles at the time. Basically imagine if Michael Bay hosted a game show, with cool cars, wicked camera shots and enough explosions to blow you mind - and then some! It's one of the most exhilarating and edge-of-your-seat racing games I have ever had the pleasure of playing through.
I had played Re-Volt, Crazy taxi, F-zero GX , Colim Mcrae Rally 3 in my childhood. It is awesome feeling to remember good old days games. :)
Maybe nice to make a 3rd part? To mention games like the Lotus Turbo Challenge series (totally blew me away seeing that on an Amiga), Supercars series, All Terrain Racing, Death Rally, Whacky Wheels? Pretty much my favorites in terms of multiplayer fun. Also, Street Rod and Test Drive 3 would nice to be mentioned
Juiced on PS2 was one of my all time favorites. I liked that if you floored it around a corner on a FR, you span out.
Great videos. Thanks.
where is part 1? i wanna see it ,like your videos, they are fantastic great :D greez from germany
I see your Battletech box cover/poster....I salute you MechWarrior!
The song in 10:10 is amazing, great job!
"Some of the simulators are just... not fun" amen to that Metal Jesus. Coming from arcade racers like NFS High Stakes or Most Wanted, I was never able to get into gran turismo, those games are beautiful, but i really like blurry speed and crashes haha.
I love the music at the end. It's by The Melody Unit as per the description above. I believe the song is called 'Best of bread' If you search for 'The Melody Unit' here on youtube, someone posted that song.
Metal Jesus Rocks you are the man
Excellent vid! My honourable mentions for part 2 would have included the Midtown Madness series / and the Screamer series both on the PC. So many to choose from.
Ahh Gran Turismo 1 and 2, so many memories as a child I remember I used to play these with my dad every day :D still got my 2 from back then and recently bought 1 again
I watched both parts of your history... Very, Very impressive. You only missed one Historic Game! Stunt Track Racer! I highly recommend you try it. It was a very early game that allowed you to hook up via Parellel port/seriel port to go head to head. An absolute classic. And I have to bow to you.... your Racing game history is better than I could have come up with... I do not give that honor to many! Good Job!
Sluggo
good history video I enjoyed this .
How do you possible like arcade games and rock n' roll and don't have a history with road rash series? BTW great channel, I'm following from now on! Keep the rock on!!!
I enjoyed this!
Glad to see you mention Crazy Taxi at the end, that was such a great arcade game. I think Midnight Club really changed the driver games for me, it has been so fun. I really wish you had mentioned the original DRIVER, I feel like I learned how to drive playing that game!
One of my favorites is 'Downhill Domination' on the PS2. This was a Pedal-Bike Arcade style racer and was so much fun. You should really give it a go Metal Jesus! :)
Mashed, Micro Machines, TOCA. Thanks for the video :)
Dude! I love your shirt in the beginning AND the video! Dream Theater rocks!
I was sitting this vid out with the complete unbelieve on how Moto Racer was not mentioned at all..Aaaaand there it was at the very end. Could have complemented the vid with a small review though. But awesome the see this accurate capture of racing-game development..!
I was born in 88 so I am still fairly young. I still owned almost all the games you listed and played them with lots of joy. Thanks for the blast from the past. ps Underground was an amazing change to racing nd re-volt was like mariokart but interestingly enough different.
Nice view on the history of racing games!
I'd like to add GTR and Destruction Derby ..
Good thing you didn't left out Carmageddon right at the end ;)
quantum redshift and cruisin' USA were some of my favorite racing games growing up.
I'm glad you mentioned crazy taxi at the end.
Would of liked to see Road Rash, Cruising USA and Trackmania. But the amount of games to list is insane and i'd say this is a pretty sweet list.
Awesome selection. Do you know Hi Octane ? It's a kind of slipstream 5000 / Wipeout game with some difference in look and game play, I was really loving this game at the time. It was really hard to find in shops, but I finally found it :). Viper Racing was awesome too. Big Red Racing was great fun with many really different vehicules. One very unknow simulation, is Spin Out Offroad or Soda Offroad, made by Papyrus, with Grand prix legends engine, tough but really great, and theres' s a track editor in it where you can shape the mesh etc.
I love this channel but wth, you include a snowboarding game but no Sega Rally, Forza Horizon, Microprose GP and an honorable mention only for Colin McRae Rally? Huge props for Great American Cross Country Road Race - my fave on the Atari 8 bit but MJ you need to do a part 3 stat.
