I've always wondered how many points Wilt would have had if he had the 3 point line. Hear me out. He shot his free throws from the top of the key because he was so big. I don't know how much difference the extra 4'9" would have made, but assume he shot near the same percentage as his free throws...and Wilt was the kind of guy who would have taken the shot. Fun to imagine at the least.
Will did not have an outside shot. That was well-known. He could hit 20-footers in practice, but somehow it never worked out in the game. The three-point shot would not have helped him one bit any more than it helped Kareem Abdul-Jabbar or Shaquille O'Neal. Robert Parish made exactly no three pointers in a 21-year career.

Bill Russell is by far the GOAT in my opinion. Why you say. Because basketball is a team sport. His TEAM's won two high school championships two NCAA championships and 11 NBA championships including one as a coach. Nobody else comes close to that! QED!
I don't necessarily think that being a greatest winner of all time makes you the greatest player of all time. Jim Loscutoff won 7 NBA championships. Michael Jordan won 6. Does that mean Loscutoff was a better player than Jordan?
While Bill Russell’s 11 rings including one as player/coach is unmatched I don’t think he is the greatest player of all time. Bill was a better team player than Wilt but Wilt was by far a more dominant and better individual player. Unfortunately for Wilt the better team will win over the better individual player almost every time. As far as high school goes Kareem won 3 straight titles, won 71 games in a row and went 79-2. I don’t think anyone is going to match that. As far as college goes, nobody is going match what Kareem did when he was at UCLA. Bill Walton comes close but nobody can match Lew Alcindor’s aka Kareem’s accomplishments.
My metric in deciding who among two players is better is to have them swap teams. Put Wilt on Russell's Celtics. How many titles do they win? Put Russell on Wilt's various teams. Do they even make the playoffs? I maintain that the only reason Wilt's teams were even competitive with the Celtics is the presence of Chamberlain.@@jimmulcahey9312
@@Mustapha1963 Can't forget the Olympic Gold Medal Russell won in 1956 either. And no, Loscutoff and Robert Horry are not better than Michael Jordan, great careers though. And yeah, I'd take Russell over Jordan. Would have had him beaten mentally.
wilt and Muhammed were getting set up for a fight. Alis management team thought that Ali might get hurt. Lets face it- the Ring isnt a street fight and Ali proved over the years he could handle big guys but he had never encountered anyone like Wilt- not many have. Of course Ali was a better boxer but as huge and powerful as Wilt was Alis handlers didnt want to take the chance.
By that logic Robert Horry was better than Larry Bird since Horry was on more champinoship teams. I thought basketball was a TEAM game, unlike tennis and golf.
You know there are perceptions and there are details. When it comes to that era it never rings truer. The Celtics from 1955 onward or maybe even slightly before that were building for a championship team. Other than the St. Louis Hawks and them most teams in that era were just trying to make payroll and be a little in the black. The owners on most teams wanted one or two of these upcoming stars like Baylor, West, Robertson, Lucas, Bellamy etc. to bring in the crowds and make money. over 90% of owners were that way. Wilt of course was the big catch- everyone wanted him. Even Auerbach in the mid 50's tried to work something out but the territorial draft couldn't be overcome. So, after a year with the Globe Trotters Wilt was drafted by the Warriors in Philly. Eddie Gottlieb was the owner, and his orders were to pass the ball into the Dipper and let him go as much as possible. The style was 180 degrees different than Boston. Boston was built to have a team in the truest sense. These other greats especially Wilt were commodities to keep franchises afloat. Boston and to a lesser extent the Hawks were the teams that really focused TOTALLY on winning before anything else. So, whenever Wilt played, he alone was expected by the media and fans to bring a title. It was so unrealistic. Despite the ridiculous expectation guys like Baylor and West and> Wilt alone on the Warriors in the early years almost beat Boston losing by a point or two here and there. A great book on all this is Terry Pluto's "Tall Tales". So, my point is context is really important for that era or any era. The Celtics and Russell were great - remember Russell was snatched up by Red from St. Louis after the draft due to lingering racism in St. Louis and some members of that team for two very good players in a trade. Russell easily could have been paired up with Bob Pettit in St. Louis. context really clarifies what went on. Its history. These two created it along with West Baylor the Big O Bellamy Lucas and later Lew- Kareem. Read some good books from those eras and see the circumstances from the players, coaches' owners and media to get a flavor of it all.
I can't help but shake my head at how under appreciated Bill Russell is. Tom Brady was universally anointed the greatest across all sports because he won 7 rings. It's a pretty silly argument comparing individuals on teams across a spectrum of unrelated sports then proclaim one above all else. Bill Russell had 11 rings yet he gets overlooked, unfortunately.
In 4 game sevens in the playoffs Wilt always outplayed Russell but Russell’s team beat Wilt’s team by a total of 9 points in the 4 games combined. I don’t know how you can call that owning someone in the playoffs.
Simply not true. In fact, you can't even truthfully say that Russell's Celtics "owned" Wilt's various teams, even though Russell's teams were typically far better than were Wilt's. I think a couple of those Celtic teams had like six HOFers on them; Wilt never had that level of support.
@@jimmulcahey9312 Thank you! Especially in a team sport that relies at least partially upon judgment calls from officials to determine its outcome. We are not talking track and field, skiing or swimming here, where the competition is exclusively against the stop watch, a height or distance measurement.
Google "Shaq Wilt" and see what 59 year old Chamberlain loks like interacting with 22 year old O'Neal. Wilt looks bigger and stronger even at that age.
Some folks here do not realize just how STRONG Wilt was. Wilt did track and field in college and was a high jump and shot-put champ. He was the first NBA player to employ an intense weight training program. That is why by the time he got to the Sixers; he was already over 300 pounds. That was MUSCLE people! To see the man in person? He could literally block out the sun! He once came to camp with Golden State weighing almost 330 pounds! By the start of the season, he lost back down to the 300 mark. He gave guys like Nate Thurmond and Bob Lanier serious problems. Even 7'2", 275 Lb. Artis Gilmore, a man considered to be the strongest not named Wilt, was impressed with him. He was too athletic and strong. Lanier tells of the story when he was a rookie in Detroit, and he was getting extra-physical with Wilt under the basket. He stated that Wilt "Turns around, picks me up like I'm a little coffee cup, moves me out of the way, and says "Son, don't do that anymore!" Bob was 6'11", and 288 lbs.!!! Shaq stated his best bench was 475 pounds. Wilt regularly benched well over 500, with Arnold witnessing him benching 550 pounds, both at Gold's Gym and on the set of 'Conan the Destroyer'. Even at the age of 59, he could still get 465; just ten short of Shaq's all-time best. Even Kobe says the list is WILT, HIMSELF, and MIKE.
Bill Russell was also a fantastic athlete. He declined to join the Olympic team for high jump in 1956 to focus on basketball. The eventual champion was Charlie Dumas, who Russell had tied for 1st with when they squared off in the high jump that year at the West Coast Relays. Despite being an amazing athlete himself, Russell has said he needed to use every trick in the book to try and contain Wilt.
No need to listen to this. Bill will say Wilt is by far the strongest. It wouldn’t surprise to hear him say, he hasn’t seen anyone even close. And that would include Shaq.
Russell has zero finals MVP awards. That award did not exist until Russell’s last year. That year it was awarded to a player on the losing team, Jerry West. The other thing is while Wilt did play with some hall of fame players too Bill Russell’s Celtics were better teams and had a better coach.
@@melvynsngltn27 Not a myth , just research his teammates.. The most Wilt had on any one team was 3. Al Attles was one but he hardly qualifies with his stats, 9ppg, 3rpg and 3 assists. He was no Cousy or Hondo etc...
@@adminkidd I'm well aware of his teammates like I said. By 1966 the Sixers were equal to Boston in 1967 & 1968 they were better than Boston in 1969 LA was better than Boston
Here's the thing about Wilt. Just make up a lie about what he did. Some outrageous bullshit lie of a stat. Then go look at the actual stat... 9 times out of 10, the lie wasn't as good as the actual stat was. i.e. "In one season he averaged 45 points a game!!!!" Nope the lie isn't big enough, because in one season he averaged 50 points.
For their era & relative to other players in that era- they were both unreal. But the game's evolved. Put Durant & Anthony Davis on that court, scoring inside, outside, and 20 ft dribble-drives...
Wilt went an entire season and played every minute. Davis cannot even play 2 months without missing entire games. Durant could not and would not ever go into the low block with Wilt he would get destroyed. He also could not shoot over Wilt. Wilt blocked Kareems sky hook twice in a row. Durants jumper would be childs play for him.
Bill had a favorite saying, "You can always shoot free throws, but you can't drive the lane on me very often". he owned the lane. you try driving, you paid the price and got thumped.

An amazing athlete yes. But lets be real he was a complete liar. He didnt have a 52" vertical and he never benched 500lbs. All bogus claims with absolutely zero evidence!
Actually there is evidence regarding his vertical leap. While he was a student at kansas look magazine visited and did a feature on him. They measured his standing reach at 9 foot 6 and his height after jumping at 13 feet 3 inches. It was published in the magazine back in 1958. That's a 45 inch vertical leap. It's also 3 inches higher than the top of the backboard. Chamberlain was a track star in college and competed in national & international meets. There's a photo you can find online of Chamberlain demonstrating his vertical leap jumping straight up against a high bar that was set at 6 feet 10 inches. In the photo Chamberlain jumps more than half of his own body length. Since he's 85 inches tall, that means it's a vertical leap somewhere in the mid 40s, consistent with what was measured at Kansas University by Look Magazine. Both of those documented jumps are actual real evidence. In addition to the fact that Chamberlain has known to have cleared 6 foot 7 and officially sanctioned NCAA track meets when going over the high jump bar.
Well.... that's what he claimed , true or not. " 20,000 different women In his 1991 book, "A View From Above," Wilt Chamberlain asserted that he had slept with 20,000 different women during his life. I know this was short but I grew up watching Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain battle it out on Sunday afternoons and there has never been anything like it before or since. Today!s NBA is but a plale shadow of what once was! -Chris Jenkins
In my mind Wilt was the best center ever. For sure the strongest. i loved seeing him play. if there was 3 ball in his days, he would have averaged another 5-6 points per game.
The 2 greatest NBA players ever in one setting....
"You think Shaq is strong? You think Shaq is unstoppable? Let's put it this way: if Wilt was a battleship, Shaq is a rowboat" - Bob Ryan
Shaq would have destroyed Wilt in Shaqs prime. Destroyed. Shaq is the most domiannt player in the history of basketball. Nobody could stop him. Not even 2 Wilts.
@@TheLegend-qj7wh Wilt was a bunch better athlete than Shaq and was physically stronger as well. Hell, even Shaq admits that Wilt was more dominant than himself.

@@TheLegend-qj7wh Shaq was much stronger. I agree. People like to deify players from the past. It’s just like people who say Bruce Lee could beat everyone in the UFC. It’s just ridiculous.
Delusional. Shaq would be gassed after the first 5 minutes.
Arnold Schwarzenegger would agree with Bill Russell. I have heard him talk of Chamberlain's weight-lifting exploits when they filmed "Conan the Destroyer" together.
Wilt could bench press 600 lbs.
We missed too many years of these interactions. Goes to show life is too short to miss out on relationships in our lives.
Great,great video
Wilt was one of a kind generational athlete…freak of nature…
Once in a century, not once in a generation.
Both guys ran sub 50 second quarters, so that tells you who was athletic. Wilt was strong though. Very very strong. He came out on the short end against the Cs only because the Cs were the Cs, a truly dynastic collection of guys that could not lose in big moments. Otherwise, Wilt was dominant, even against Bill at times.
At their stride length that’s not impressive.

I knew before I even opened this up who the person was; Wilt was a freak of nature, strong, athletic, etc. He would be great in any era.
Either of them in their prime would destroy the kids playing today.
WILT was the greatest American athlete ever.
Class always shows!
Love Bill Russells laugh.
Bill russell laugh should be inducted in the HOF🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
both legends !! NBA nneds MORE players LIKE THESE GUYS!!! the game today isHORRIBLE
The Celtics were the best team, but Wilt was the best player.
Truth by both greats!
Wilt Chamberlain hands down GOAT
In terms of physicality Wilt had a career average of 45.8 minutes of play in a league with 48 minutes of regulation play.
In a league were one 50 point game is pretty much a pass for the Hall of Fame he had 118 50 point games and the only 100 point game.
So fairly good;).
As a boy, Wilt Chamblain appeared in a dream, l never forgot.
Wilt was a gentle giant. He was hesitant and avoided fouls too much.
Looking at this video it is hard to believe Russell outlived Wilt by over 20 years. Wilt looks so much younger in this. Both IMO were the greatest players in any era but are mostly forgotten today
100 points without the 3 point shot.
55 rebounds in a single game , an NBA record... against Bill Russell and the Celtics. He also had 40 rebounds in a playoff game against Kareem.
26 Blocks in a game.
Costas: Who IS the strongest NBA player of all time?
Bill Russell: well.... that would be me. The weights that I lift win.

The way I lift...my muscles grow

Artis Gilmore needs to be in conversation for strongest
Yes, but he still got handled by Wilt. That's how strong he was.
Artis should be a channel to himself. That NBA era; studs have forgotten more about basketball than any of our last 20 years of Network Hyped Cutie Pies ever hoped to learn, no less play!@@pointsur67
why people wont admit that Wilt was the GOAT is beyond me
Wilt looks so much younger in this interview then Bill. Especially the movement and posture, he looks as though he still works out and plays.
Last phrase- he was smart. Both were very smart.
Great 😊
Wes Unseld and Willis Reed were as tough as hell.
And Willis Reed. And Bob Lanier. And Nate Thurmond.
Don’t forget Willis Reed
Forget all that NJ vs LBJ nonsense. There's only 1 GOAT and his name is Wilt.
100%

Wilt Chamberlain also did the Long Jump, Ran Track some say Muhammad Ali challenge Him to a Fight.
wilt and Muhammed were getting set up for a fight.
He also did the high jump.
all wilt had to do is extend his arms and ali would have never touched Wilt

When you keep things in perspective Wilt Chamberlain records make him unseen regardless of era and time that puts him on mount rushmore*
Bill Russell got 11 rings he's the goat
By that logic Robert Horry was better than Larry Bird since Horry was on more champinoship teams. I thought basketball was a TEAM game, unlike tennis and golf.
Dont wanna offend anyone, but this interview shows that both of them know who the greater player was
Larry Birb was the right answer. Dude blew it!
Bill Russell won a LOT of championships ... that's says it all.
Wilt looked like 20yo in the video, that's how speciment he was, just incredible.
Yawn troll
Crazy too see how eloquent the old NBA players like Gilmore, Kareem, Reed.
Now you got Zion, and Morant faces of franchise. Progress?
I can't help but shake my head at how under appreciated Bill Russell is. Tom Brady was universally anointed the greatest across all sports because he won 7 rings. It's a pretty silly argument comparing individuals on teams across a spectrum of unrelated sports then proclaim one above all else. Bill Russell had 11 rings yet he gets overlooked, unfortunately.
lolwut? Tom Brady hasn't been anointed the greatest "across all sports". People still say "the Michael Jordan of X", not "Tom Brady"
BILL RUSSELL THE REAL GOAT
Wilt was weakening his legs all day and still played like that.
Fact is Bill owned Wilt in the playoffs
In 4 game sevens in the playoffs Wilt always outplayed Russell but Russell’s team beat Wilt’s team by a total of 9 points in the 4 games combined. I don’t know how you can call that owning someone in the playoffs.
It is obvious in the interview that Russell had the utmost respect for Wilt. But hey Rick you know better than the man himself.
Simply not true.
In fact, you can't even truthfully say that Russell's Celtics "owned" Wilt's various teams, even though Russell's teams were typically far better than were Wilt's. I think a couple of those Celtic teams had like six HOFers on them; Wilt never had that level of support.
@@Mustapha1963By 1966 Wilt was as good as Boston 1967 & 1968 The Sixers were better 1969 the Lakers were better. Wilt's still only won once

That was a young shaq. In his prime Shaq was definitely bigger than wilt. I'm not saying that means he was stronger though.@@apefilms7221
He stated that Wilt "Turns around, picks me up like I'm a little coffee cup, moves me out of the way, and says "Son, don't do that anymore!"
Bob was 6'11", and 288 lbs.!!!
The Jordan---------------Rules
No need to listen to this. Bill will say Wilt is by far the strongest. It wouldn’t surprise to hear him say, he hasn’t seen anyone even close. And that would include Shaq.
My mistake Bill won league mvp 5 times
Wrong title
Don’t do that
11 championships?, I'm sorry Jordan , I don't know 😢
Wilt Chamberlain
Russell is so arrogant for a guy who played in a stacked team and was half of the player Wilt was.
Russell has 11 rings and 5 final mvps to Wilts 2 rings, ouch!
He also benefitted from having up to 7 HOF teammates, Wilt didn't have that luxury.
@adminkidd not true Wilt had alot of hall of fame teammates. Bill Russell always having a better team is a myth
Hey
Here's the thing about Wilt. Just make up a lie about what he did. Some outrageous bullshit lie of a stat. Then go look at the actual stat... 9 times out of 10, the lie wasn't as good as the actual stat was. i.e. "In one season he averaged 45 points a game!!!!" Nope the lie isn't big enough, because in one season he averaged 50 points.
Wilt has lead the league in scoring, rebounds & 1 year he had the most assists but not per game average.
Bill Russell won all the championships long before the league got watered down with too many teams. Bill Russell is the real GOAT.
For their era & relative to other players in that era- they were both unreal. But the game's evolved. Put Durant & Anthony Davis on that court, scoring inside, outside, and 20 ft dribble-drives...
Whatever...😐
Let me explain something….. Anthony Davis soft ass wouldn’t do shit ! Wilt would send him home crying .
And Durant and Davis would have their heads handed to them..
