Just bought one of these in the U.S. with no storage for $77 USD. Going to use it as a small game server that I can just leave running in the corner, drawing as little power as possible while still having some decent performance when needed.
Thanks for the video! I was wondering if you tested the speeds of the stock NVMe SSD or another? Would love to know the speeds though I'm guessing they max out around 500 MB/s since its Sata...
I have a couple of these and I have a couple questions. I cannot get audio to pass through HDMI or display port? I cannot use HDMI and a display port for dual monitors at the same time is there something in the specs that are limiting this?
You probably need to update your Dell drivers. Search your Optiplex model number followed by "dell drivers" and you'll find where to go. I had this happen on a couple of them (some of the video ports not working) and that fixed it!
My son got one of these from eBay with no hdd. I tried to put an hdd from a optiplex 390 with Win 7 on it but the hdd will not work in the 5040. Does the hdd need to be wiped and windows need to be reinstalled on the 5040? And could I install 10 or 11? Or is there something else going on? Thanks.
These are great budget buys, does this model have an internal speaker? I bought a similar Dell for a client of mine who didn't want to buy a new system but was upgrading from an old Core 2 Duo and these are a huge increase in power over those sort of old systems for a very inexpensive price. The one I purchased had an internal speaker which I was amazed to see and the client was very happy with that too as neither of us expected that. The audio is quite good from it too!
It does have an internal speaker and agree these are great buys when you're on a budget. Changing out the HDD to an SSD on a 6th or 7th gen CPU with 8GB of RAM means the device will be snappy for years to come.
@@FrimleyComputing most of the refurbs of 6th generation PCs come with 256gb SSD as standard rather than the old mechanical disks. The write amount varies though, some of them have seen a hard life. I think in future video you should definitely mention any unusual add-ons such as the internal audio. Thanks for sharing this and I hope someone sees it and goes out and buys one 👍
You have to buy an adapter. Or you could install a wifi & bluetooth card via the PCI slot. Its easier to buy a USB adapter though and they work well. They're on Amazon for like $15 bucks! I'll put the link here if you'd like
You'll need a low profile GPU and you'll also need to change the power supply if your GPU needs it's own power, making sure the new PSU is compatible with the DELL mainboard power slots and voltages.
@@j_thats_it Yes it will! I've ran up to a low profile GTX 1650 in one of these but not for long. 1050ti needs less watts (I'm assuming) so it should be fine.
Can I upgrade this with ASUS GeForce GT 730 2GB GDDR5 ? I want to use multiple monitors, in this 2 DP and 1 HDMI already given but I don't think GPU can Take a load of 3 monitor simultaneously so want to add a graphic card so can I use Gt 730 ?
Yes, My dad has this exact 5040, I put a GT730 in his works great, my mom has the dell 3020 I put a GT 1030 in hers, the 730 is 2gb of DDR3, the GT 1030 is 4gb of DDR4.
Games older style only if you upgrade to a GT730 or a GT1030, plays all the games my parents want to play on it. I loaded a Marvel and star wars pinball machine game from 2017 played not problem on my dads with a GT730 on it.
What it is the specialized non upgradable power supply and one slot only video card slot , so it's very limited maybe good for non gammer people just casual facebook and youtube users !
Power can be upgraed to 250watts for $40 amazon, you can use a 1030 either 4gb or 2gb DDR4 or 5 ram in it, upgrade with a PCI-E with 4 USB 3.0 slots, NO its not your $1000 gamer machine, or even a $500 medium gamer machine. Its a $98, I need a just a 2nd machine to surf, download youtube videos, play older games and emulators. all on the stock 180 watt power supply, thats all. Its not for everyone.
I volunteer at Willow Creek Computer Connection, S. Barrington, IL, We get donated computers to be refurbish to be given to school children. We got 3 Optiplex 5040 because the video does not work from either a video card or the other 3 video ports. If we (WCCC) got just one of these where the video did not work, I would salvage the parts and toss the unit into the trash. With 3 of these having the same problem I question on why the video signal does not work. Asking Dell community gives answers that still does not work for me. Would I buy one of these, maybe no. Ever hear of a computer company doing a recall because of a computer problem? It is really a fault on the motherboard. Little else can go wrong that since I did replace or tested every part with new parts and still no video. I assume that the fault lays with the company who made the motherboards.
Resetting CMOS/changing CMOS battery sometimes is required if you're using Displayport. I've had issues in the past with Displayport not outputting video until I reset CMOS.
My dad's HDMI worked right out of the box with the unboard graphics, we even stuck a GT730 in it, he wanted it for older games that win10 refused to play, so I stuck his win 7 ultimate on there(a chore of a mess in bios to setup for win7) and everything works great. he loves now that he can play his older games, play 2k(1140p) vidoes, download his 4k walks from youtube with it, he stuck a 1tb teamgroup in it, plus hi 250gb game drive, and another PCI-E 4 USB 4 port card in it.

well I got a Re-Newed on from Amazon prime for $92 for my dad, comes with a 90 day warranty which we bought another 3 year warranty for $19, looks brand new inside, works perfect, upgrade parts on it already, more ram, graphics card, PCI-E USB 3.0 card

Perfect and thanks! I'm tired on my sufficient cooled Lenovo T410 Laptop (lagging a lot when it's hot), so I'm going to buy one of these.

has to be a low profile one slot graphics, I have stuck GT 730 and GT1030 in thei style no problem.
Can you take this out of the case and put into a new case?
what are all the gpu upgrades u can put in this

This was previously used so not new, but a great system.
Does the motherboard support DDR4 RAM?
Good question, I know the processor has support for DDR4 but not sure on the motherboard.
