Haha -- that's great to hear! At first I thought you were going to say it was still too LONG! I made a 30-minute edit and it just felt way too fast and left too much out IMHO. So... I went back and added a bunch back in. 😉👍 BUT... I did make a 90-second version for Instagram Reels for those who are into that short-form vertical video content (not me! 🤮) Thanks for watching and the comment! ✌
Yep! And... the good news is that in addition to this quasi "clip show/re-run" episode -- the new content from this year's big hike is not that far from being complete (have been working on both in parallel.) Thanks for watching!
Wowza!!! No kidding, just yesterday I checked your channel if I missed something new 👀... Well , I did not. But today....😜 I am so happy to see this "condensed"🥺, very well polished piece of art from your last trip ✌️✌️ it's really beautiful...thanks a lot 💪✌️
Thanks! I'm not sure the UA-cam algorithm likes the way I did it, but I think it's good to give viewers the option of the daily series with all the minutiae versus the more condensed overview video. AND the good news is that I've already been working on the video content from this year's big hike so it won't be much longer before I begin publishing that as well. Thanks for watching and commenting. 🌞✌
Ahh! That was a fun review of your trip to watch. We watched the original day by day account as it unfolded last winter from our newly purchased and very dilapidated 1943 farmhouse while the snowy winter winds blew outside, dreaming of past Utah hiking trips. Presently sitting in our (mostly) renovated house watching this review of your trip, still dreaming of getting back down for some of that one of a kind Utah trekking. Now going to go back and watch the original all over again! Thanks much for this!
Thanks for watching... again! I enjoyed putting together the Z2GR series, but I'm anxious to get to the new stuff. The new series is already in process so it should debut before too long. It was definitely quite different in many ways out there in 2023. Cheers! 🌞✌
You have no idea how I envy you in a positive way to see so much beauty. Thank you for taking me alone. Now I’m too old for this kind of expeditions. I’m glad I was crazy active when young but did not explore this much of Utah. Keep going and make us happy. We’re fully with you on every hike.
You are very welcome! I really did begin recording my journeys to primarily share with family/friends who couldn't go with me. So I love it that I can extend that to a larger community. Thanks for watching again and the comment. 🌞✌
That's great! I'm shocked to see how may people watch my videos on phones these days. I guess that's just the way of the world, but I definitely make my content for the larger screens so I hope you enjoy it. Cheers! ✌
Thanks for making these videos! I love being able to visit Utah with you anytime I feel the itch... and it's awesome having all of this documented for future trip planning
My wife and I really loved your daily vlogs of this amazing trip, and it was fun to relive it again in this condensed version. Glad you included Mr. Bighorn from the Beehive Traverse!
Thanks -- glad you enjoyed re-watching the condensed version! It was tough deciding what to leave/cut, but all-in-all I'm pretty happy with how this turned out. For those who think it's STILL too long... I posted a 90-second version on Instagram! (my UA-cam audience seems to like more minutiae though.) 🌞✌
I have been hoping and watching for your videos. I know there is a lot of effort that goes into your productions and I truly appreciate your hard work.
Thanks -- I appreciate that. I know this video is a bit of a repeat for many -- but hopefully it's fun to see an overview of the hike. BUT... the new videos from this year's big hike are not that far away from being posted now as well. Cheers! 🌞
Thanks! The good news is that the new content from this year's big hike is already shaping up and thus is won't be that much longer before I'm ready to start publishing. Thanks for watching and the comment! 🌞
Thanks for watching and the comment! I did a 33-day hike this year and the video for that adventure is already in progress. So... it won't be too much longer before I hit the publish button for that as well. Cheers! ✌
Man, I've been to a lot of these places. Sometimes even by using your map. So it always makes me slightly sentimental to watch your journeys across the place I'm fortunate enough to call home.
That's awesome. I too get sentimental at times going through some of my old content and remembering the first time I visited a certain spot. Thanks for watching and sharing your experience. 🌞✌
Your channel is my "go to" whenever I get a hankering for some Utah scenery. Jamal you never disappoint. I appreciate the 2022 highlights video and I look forward to your 2023 trip!
Thanks! I realize this one was somewhat a "re-run" for many, but I'm glad some are enjoying it. I'm really anxious to share the new stuff -- not too much longer now. Cheers! 🌞✌
Thanks for the flashback, Jamal! What a great journey. What a difference a season makes. When you returned in October, who could have guessed that the winter would bring record snows to much of the west. Keep on moving!✌️
Thanks! Yes... what a difference a season makes (I was so happy I went back in October) AND what a difference a YEAR makes! Spoiler alert for the new content coming up... 2023 was a very WET year compared to 2022! Not that that will surprise many people, but it was interesting to see the difference firsthand in back-to-back years. Thanks for watching and the comment! 🌞✌
Thank you -- very appreciated! As much as I'd love to have a million subscribers, I realize my channel is a niche of a niche and doesn't appeal to THAT many people. That's OK though, those who DO like it seem to stick around and say nice things. So... thanks again watching and the comment. 🌞✌
Thanks! And I agree -- when I see those slickrock domes and peaks from a distance and I just want to walk up and around them all! Thanks for watching and the comment. 🌞✌
Thanks -- glad you've enjoyed them. I love how the 360 cameras keep getting better and better. The quality/resolution still isn't as good as a traditional camera, but I love the effect and flexibility. Thanks for watching and the comment! 🌞
Good to see you back, even if it is a repeat. Can't wait for the new videos of your 2023 hike. Also, that lost Go Pro camera is still out there in a creek near Green River.
Thanks! Yes, wanted to get this video done to make good on that promise from last year to offer an alternative to watching the full VLOG series for some (but yes, makes for a good "re-run" as well.) BUT... now "onward" to the 2023 videos! (they are already in process and not too far from being ready to begin rolling out.) Thanks again for watching and the comment! 🌞✌
It's always great the Prince of Wilderness! Really love ❤️❤️❤️ you beautiful voice 💝🤩! Lots of love and respect from a solo mountain hiker friend from the Hindu Kush Mountains Lower Chitral District of Pakistan!
Thanks -- glad to hear it! I think it's good to give viewers the option of watching a long overview video OR the shorter daily videos (which were more focused on each area.) The YT algorithm might not agree with me -- but I'm OK with that. 😉✌
Great adventure. Thanks for sharing!! I am sure during these long treks it can be hard to record sometimes. Especially towards the end of a long hard day.
Thanks -- I appreciate you for watching and the comment. You are correct, there are times that I'm too tired (or too pre-occupied) to record and I frequently regret it later. Sometimes photos with text can substitute, but other times the moment is just lost (except to my memory I guess!) Thanks again and cheers! 🌞✌
Loved the video, amazing views of Utah. That's a really long way and so many consecutive days to hike in that remote area and alone, I probably wouldn't even last a week in that environment. Whichever camera system your are using is awesome, technology has come a long way.
Thanks! 26 of the 42 days I actually didn't see any other HIKERS -- so there are definitely some remote and rarely-visited areas left in the wilderness. Many of the "unique" shots are via a 360-degree camera which I can re-frame while editing. The quality/resolution isn't as high as a traditional camera, but I love the effect and flexibility. Thanks for watching and the comment! ✌
Great to relive your epic journey Jamal. I've hiked and camped throughout the Southwest since 1989. Utah was by far my favourite State, so dramatic. What sparked your interest specifically in Utah ? I live in the UK and now 79 so travel such as this, not feasible any more.
Thanks for watching the "re-run" of sorts. 😉👍 I grew up in the Midwest, but my parents took me on camping trips when I was young. When I was about 8 there was a "nature" article featured in our Weekly Reader for class and it featured pictures of The Narrows in Zion and Goblin Valley. I thought they both looked SO awesome. I showed them to my parents and they said... "let's go there next summer"... and we did! After that I was hooked! 🌞
Jamal: What an adventure you had. I have been a subscriber of yours for a while and started watching your 2024 Sierras backpacking trip recently. While waiting for your next Sierra video to come out, I decided to watch this trek. This trip makes the Sierras look tamed. So sorry to hear you lost your dad. I lost my dad in August. You mentioned in your Sierra video, you went to USC. My wife’s family and including my two adult sons went to USC. My youngest is getting his MBA there. What was your major? Cinematography? You are very talented and fun to watch. Can one contribute thru PayPal or Venmo? Hike on and have a great day.
Thanks for going back to watch this! 👍 And... thanks for the words re: my dad and sorry to hear about yours as well. Yes, I graduated from the film school at SC and thus I'm a proud Trojan (though not really serious re: jokes I may make about other schools. 😉) I really don't do any of this for $$$, but I do always appreciate donations. One can use the "Buy Me a Beer" link on my website or UA-cam's own SuperThanks system. Thanks for watching and the comment! 🌞✌
I'm far from ultralight, but my pack is not as heavy as it might appear (it's more bulky than heavy really.) My base weight for this 2022 hike was around 25 pounds which means I was just over 40lbs when fully loaded with a week's worth of food and topped off on water (5-6 liters.) I carry more electronics than most hikers! Thanks for watching and the question. 🌞✌
Nope -- I thought about it, but decided to NOT put a preview at the end of this video. I did post some hints re: the new route on my Instagram page though (eg 33 days in the Escalante area with watery canyons, sandy plateaus, and snowy mountains!)
Dude about 10 years ago you hiked up to Mt Langley, I am curious what zoom lenses and camera did you use back then to take the close up image on Mt Whitney? The image is very good. I post my question here because I have a hunch you may not get to the old video to answer my question. :) Plus what camera equipment do you use nowadays for telephoto? Thanks.
Heya -- saw the notice and answered there, but will answer here too just in case anyone else is curious. That was back in the days when I was using a Panasonic SuperZoom camera. I think it was a 400mm equivariant. I really liked it, but I'm hard on my cameras and the telescoping lens didn't hold up for many hikes and thus I replaced it for something lighter with better video capabilities (with far less zoom reach though.) These days I'm pretty limited in my tele ability as I only use my Pixel Pro with a 4x lens (every thing else I use is wide-based such as DJI Action and Insta360.) Thanks for watching and the comment! 🌞✌
Condensed? Even the long one was too short! I love it all.
Haha -- that's great to hear! At first I thought you were going to say it was still too LONG! I made a 30-minute edit and it just felt way too fast and left too much out IMHO. So...
