Coyote Buttes and The Teepees | My Paria Plateau Loop Hike (2022)

  • After leaving colorful White Pocket, I made my way back across the plateau to more incredibly crazy and scenic sandstone formations at Coyote Buttes South. This is part 4 of my nine-day Paria Plateau backpacking adventure in and around Vermilion Cliffs National Monument. Highlights include desolate plateau hiking, Coyote Buttes, The Teepees, and some nonchalant desert bighorns as well as some bonus footage of nearby rock art and Chinle/Bentonite mudhills.
    Thanks for following along!

      No problem . It actually pains me to see trash when I'm on a longer hike and I don't really have space for it. Mylar balloons though I can always make room for somewhere in my pack! Thanks for watching and the comment! 🌞✌

    Yet another awesome installment. After traveling for a year around the US, we have arrived at the conclusion that there is NOTHING like the desert southwest when it comes to peacefulness, beautiful geology, and an abundance of color. Our favorite area of the country for sure.

    As helium becomes scarce, perhaps less trash for you to collect in the desert! Have you been to the Chiracahuas in SE AZ? I know, it's not "across Utah." Maybe you could have a "beyond Utah" episode. Looking forward to whatever's next!

    I love your trip and the color of your Jeep belongs to the area. Fantastic landscapes , never visited South Coyotes and in my days it was no permit area. Thank you Jamal. You’re always an inspiration.

      Thanks again for watching! Yes, the Jeep color was somewhat by accident, but it was perfect! I'm glad I finally got in to see Coyote Buttes South and think it's worth another visit (or two). I only saw two other individuals out there on my permit day and only two cars on the day I skirted the boundary. The various areas of interest aren't close together so it makes it tough to see it all in one day (though much of the Paw Hole area is technically outside the boundary.) Cheers! ✌

    But seriously thank you for sharing your adventure's across my beloved home state (and I guess some of the Utah looking parts of Arizona too). I did the Wire Pass/White House loop back in 2002 when I was still young and still physically able. I always regretted not having a chance to go back and explore the area more. We were in Coyote Butte South last Sept 2021. We entered from Cottonwood Cove parking area. Our guide and a guide from another group were discussing the big cat footprints they were seeing in the loose sand near the Southern Wave. Then I saw that you camped right below the Southern Wave and it made me think of that conversation about the big Cat prints. If all the springs were dried up in April, I wonder where that Cat got water in Sept. Such a beautiful area. I wish you could of crossed the Southern Wave in the noon sunlight which made the wave colors really come out. Thanks for bringing me along on the adventure again, so soon after I visited the area.

    • @Acrossutah
      @Acrossutah  2 роки тому

      Thanks for watching and sharing your experience. I've heard others talk about cat tracks in this area, so they must be fairly common -- even though it is a fairly dry area. There is one fairly reliable seep, but it was out of the way for me (and I had water at my cache site so I was OK.) And yeah... I also wish I could have seen the Southern Wave earlier in the day. I actually wanted to do my route route in reverse through CBS, but there was no way to make it work with my permit/schedule. Cheers! ✌

      Thanks! I usually pack for about 6-7 days at a time. It's sometimes less, sometimes more -- just depends on the re-supply/cache options available. In the past I haven't focused too much on my gear/food in my videos just because I think there are other UA-camrs that do a better job at that. But... soon I'll be publishing my extended series for my 2023 hike in which I'll take a closer look at some of that stuff. Also, I hope to do another big hike this year and maybe for it I'll do a stand-alone episode focused entirely on food and gear planning. Thanks for watching! 🌞✌

      Yep -- I miss the Wrangler in many ways, but it was starting to become problematic in old age. I can't do the really rough roads with the Renegade, but it's better on the highways in between so I guess that's the trade-off. I actually got a flat tire putting out a cache on a remote backroad for my Zion to Green River Hike. First time I'd had a flat in close to 30 years -- and probably the worst place one could imagine (and Renegades don't have spares -- just "fix-it" kits!) ! Thanks! In hindsight I'm glad too. Might have mentioned it already, but originally wanted to do one part focused on the "Canyon" portion of the hike and another on the "Plateau". I'd hoped to get the Coyote Buttes permit for the END of my trip, but when that didn't work out and I needed to begin the trip there I devised the whole "flashback" idea. Now that it's split into four I didn't really need to do that, but... all-in-all I think it still worked out OK and the four episodes might be better for those primarily interested in one specific area. If there is a big pullout on the west side of the House Rock road for a TH, that was just cleared when I was there. After failing to get a permit to the Wave, we did get a permit to South Coyote Buttes and visited both it and White Pocket. Simply spectacular. If you're into photography or videography, you could spend days photographing these places in all the various lighting. In early April, it snowed on us in White Pocket, adding to the incredible experience. While nothing really compares to the Wave, I was blown away by how many really cool things there are to see in both White Pocket and South Coyote Buttes. Definitely worth visiting both.

      I agree -- both spots are really great and the entire region is pretty spectacular as a whole. As you mentioned the different lighting really plays a big role in how the landscapes looks as well. Haha -- thanks! My sense of humor doesn't seem to always land with everyone, but that doesn't stop me! 😉👍 I've forgotten what I've said about the Wire Pass incident, but... yeah I decided to omit that portion since these videos IMHO were already kinda long. To re-cap -- I encountered parents letting their child scribble on the walls and I got pretty mad at them about it. Though I stand by that message, it seemed a little too negative for an otherwise upbeat/happy video. In the future I might make an alternate "all-in-one" edit for this series and in that case I might include that scene and a few other unseen portions (and all in correct order.) Glad I could add to your after-work entertainment. 🌞👍 That area is notoriously dry, but I was fine because I had a lot of water at my cache site. Truth is... I primarily placed that cache just for the water . as I knew the top end of Buckskin would be dry (or only have undesirable water.) Otherwise I could have done this loop without the cache -- but it did make the first two days easier as I didn't have to carry so much food (and got a change of clothes as well!) Great -- glad you stumbled upon my channel and like it thus far. For this hike I used several cameras. Most of the unique wide/follow shots were done with a 360-degree camera (Insta360) and then re-framed while editing. I also used my Pixel Pro, an OSMO Pocket, and a Go2. Each hike I change it up a little to experiment, but my general set-up is a combo of a 360 camera + action cam + plus phone. This provides some options for different situations while still being fairly backpacker friendly. Thanks for watching! 🌞✌

    Hey Jamal, Having watched every one of your videos over the years (really!), I've always wondered what the consequences would be if some evil person or animal vandalized or stole your food stash. What would you do? Would you be in danger?

    • @Acrossutah
      @Acrossutah  2 роки тому +2

      Heya -- I actually talk about this a bit in my upcoming Zion to Green River series, but... I'll go ahead and answer here as well. Over the years I've probably placed close to 50 caches and have never had a serious problem (one minor issue, primarily due to my own improper packing I think.) BUT... I do always have a backup plan in case something SHOULD happen. It might be counter intuitive, but I usually place my caches along roads or not that far from semi-popular areas. Thus if I had to, I could always hike/hitch out and do a normal re-supply. I also tend to hike with extra food, so there's a bit of redundancy or leeway built in to my plan. Placing a cache in an extremely remote area where one is 100% dependent on that food/water is a bad plan IMHO. Thanks for watching and the question! 🌞

      Thanks. I'm still using the Big Agnes Fly Creek UL1. I've loved it, but it's really falling apart after 10+ years so I too need a new something. I don't think they make this exact same one anymore, so I need to do some research before next year. 👍

    Kept wondering where you were getting water!!

      @Acrossutah  Рік тому +1

      Yeah -- water can be tough to come by in this area. I was glad to get it where I did, but also had the cache near Wire Pass just to make sure (knowing I really didn't want to have to grab any water from the Buckskin!) Thanks for watching! 🌞

    This looks Amazing! Thank you for recording this and sharing with us! How did you record this btw? Are you using a selfie stick or something like drone?

    • @Acrossutah
      @Acrossutah  2 роки тому

      Thanks! Those super-wide shots are accomplished with a 360-degree camera on a very long selfie stick. During editing I use software which makes the stick "invisible" and lets me customize the point of view. It's not as high resolution as a traditional camera, but I love the effect. Thanks for watching and the comment! 🌞✌

      @@Acrossutah oh wow! I’m beyond impressed. Would you be willing to share info on the 360 model and the selfie stick? I for once thought this was done through a drone. I will appreciate it. Thank you again!

      I've used a few different ones over the years, but this was with the Insta360 One-R. The lens got scratched so I changed to a X2 for my next hike. They are really cool cameras, but a word of warning: the workflow with them can be difficult because the files are huge and require pre-processing and thus more time/effort. 👍

      @@Acrossutah Thank you so much. This is a great alternative for places especially national parks where drones are not allowed. Superb videos!

    Maybe isolate that Big Horn Sheep footage and share in it's own video, it is really fantastic! Thank you

      Thanks -- that's a good idea. I occasionally do some of that on Instagram via the Stories feature, but it's something I could do here as well to make it easier for people to find. Hmm... a winter project maybe! Thanks for watching and the comment! 🌞👍

      Thanks! I have linking and embedded enabled so the videos can be used that way via standard UA-cam terms of service. Downloading and re-posting is not allowed though. Cheers!

    Beautiful scenery, some people need to be more responsible for their balloons, they end up miles away & even affects wildlife
