Replacing the fan in our PSU with Noctua the right way.

- One of our awesome channel members recently donated a 1000w Cooler Master power supply to us but it had a little issue with its fan. After a bit of investigation it appeared someone at some point had tried to change the fan out and made a right mess of it so we are going to fix it properly.
** Do not try this at home! **

PHT connector?
I have done a bit of electronics. Not sure what this is.
I thought the connectors were Molex or perhaps JST
I googled PHT and found nothing.
I'm planning to replace the fan in my PSU this week as its making annoying noises.
I've ordered the fan which obviously has the wrong connector.
I'd like to know what the "correct" connector is.
Thanks.
I'd like to know this one too.. I can't find the right adapter
You are right. Its not a PHT connector, its a JST 2pin connector with probably PH2 (2mm) Pitch.
only thing I would add is that you should tape off half of the fan when putting it back in. Most power supplies should come with a plastic air guide that directs air over the components and out the exhaust properly. Without this guide you have much more turbulent flow and recirculation of air, making the cooling less efficient.
Never changed a fan before, but I do like to buy older systems to mess around with and the dustier the system the further apart I tend to take it for cleaning. I also tend to take them apart when they look cheap, just to check for blown caps.
some psus have a lower starting voltage for the fans, not all fans would work for all psus necessarily, the Arctic p12s have a safe starting voltage at 2.8v, but some noctuas can go up to 7 or 8, and may not work with most psus that don't output said amount to a pht
otherwise amazing video❤️
yes this is a good point.. noctua wouldn't work in my psu (seasonic 1000watt platinum in standard mode).. I wired the fan to the mobo per someone else's comment on here.
I ran into the same issue with a Noctua fan and a Corsair PSU.
I just got my two spare Noctua fans running at 5V:
1. NF-A12x25 PWM
2. NF-P12-1700 PWM
Wow surprised what had gone on in the PSUs past life! 3d printing to make a fan fit sounds like hard work just get the right size fan right? Excellent upgrade!
I have a feeling who ever did it wanted to make it silent for some reason and only had an old Zalman fan hanging about. The new Noctua is working great though and so quiet 😀
Would be nice if you explain teach us how to make this 3pin to PhD 2pin connectors.
lol, and the PSU was never shown working.
0:07 Can I do it at friends house?
🤣
Always a satisfying job refurbing a PSU ❤
What the heck. Dude your channel is very useful! I'm gonna sub. Thx!
But can it run a 4090? lol. Good job making it safe again and nice donation to the channel.
It should do lol but will be a long time before it ever sees one.
I had to do something similar on an old PSU where the fan started to wobble and making a racket, except the fan wires was directly soldered onto the board, i opted for connecting it to the motherboard instead through the PSU grommet and using it as an extra exhaust fan, i didn't wanna start soldering on an PSU, while i do have the know how i wouldn't wanna risk messing something up over a simple fan swap.
Sounds like an awesome solution. Could be motherboard / software controlled then too 👍
Hello, could you tell me, can I use p12 Arctic fan (2000rpm) to my Aerocool 750W PSU by connecting the fan to motherboard? The fan speed will be controlled based on CPU temperature. Is this a good idea? I have GeForce 3600Ti (max 200W)
A lot of people do this tbh. We did it in our NZXT H1 recently but with an SFX PSU.
@@TechLabUK thank you for your answer. Doesn't the power supply overheat? Everything's fine?
@@oscarman3333 It could if the fan isn't pushing enough air through it but you can create a high fan curve to keep it running faster.
Doing this mod with a Corsair sf750 which has a mini 4 pin, what would the adapter be for that?
My PSU fan is a bit louder than I like and I have tinnitus so it's causing me issues, so this is something I'm interested in. That cable you made, do you have instructions for it plz ?
EDIT: n/m found answer further down, thanks!
Glad you found the answer. It may be different on different power supplies but very often Noctua provide extras to do things like this because their fans are often used within the industrial setting where people mod everything.
@@TechLabUK God damnit. So it's me again. I have no memory of this video or my comment. I've obviously still not done this - it went away for a bit and now the noise is back so I've yet to do it. I should be surprised but my brain is swiss cheese so eh. ANYWHO just a quick Q, to drain a PSU, is "pulling out the power cord while the PC is on" a valid way to do it ? Or do you know a way to discharge them from home ? It's not ideal to pull the cord while it's on but it's not ideal to be zapped so lesser of 2 evils!
I really have to start writing stuff down this is embarrassing lol.
One very important point that was completely missed: which direction does the air flow go???
Always as an intake.
Hello id like to know where i can find a cable like the one you did 4 pin to 2 pin i cannot find it. It's the only thing i need to swap the fan
We made the cable ourselves but as long as you fan is a 4 Pin PWM you are looking for a 4 Pin PWM to PHT adaptor (3Pin VC to PHT if a 3 Pin VC Fan).
How do you safely discharge a psu? Great video and mod!
A method I've used after turning off the system, is turning the PSU switch to OFF and unplug the power cord. Then just press the ON button of the case and you should see like it will try to boot, lets say LED turning on-off, fans spinning slightly, or even a "click" sound.
Wait a few seconds, after that it should be discharged by now, so you can unplug all the cables from motherboard and drives.
They are called rubber grommets
Can i learn this adapter cable brand and model? 😅
Pretty sure I made the one in this video from a Noctua extension. The cable you need though will depend on the connection in the PSU it self. Most will use a 2 pin PHT which Nocua do have with some of their fans.
@@TechLabUK Thank you 😄
Hey dude, where can I get one of those PHT to 3pin adapters?
You can usually get them from somewhere like ebay but often knowing what they are called is difficult. Something like this: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/364016036228
@@TechLabUK yeah man that’s the problem, I can’t find the 2 pin to 3 pin adapter anywhere. I’m surprised they are not more common. How come PSU fans only have two wires?
@@naylor2006 just controlled differently. You can manually splice the wires to work though.
@@TechLabUK Yeah but which wires need to be spliced together? The Fan has 4 cables black red yellow and blue and the two pin only has well two.
Which cables from the Fan do i need to connect to the two pin. My guess was black (Fan) to Black (2pin) and red (Fan) to Red (2pin). After that i took the blue and yellow cable from the fan and made them longer to connect them to the motherboard so i can see the RPM and controll the Fan speed if needed.
After trying that over and over with only the Powesupply plugged in and not the "monitoring cable" to the motherboard I just can't get it running, what's the mistake here?
Its not a PHT connector, its a JST 2pin connector with probably PH2 (2mm) Pitch.
Notice he replaced a 135mm fan with a 140mm fan and instead of telling you the screws didn't line up used the pull tab mounts??
Also, it was rude to not show the custom harness work regardless of how easy it may be- though probably the hardest part of the upgrade.
I was curious to see if he would have any startup voltage issues and ended up with the eye pain of watching typical YT noobs make a half azz video...
@@shaun4bigblocks993 Cool story.
