- The 2016 Kaikoura earthquake was a magnitude 7.8 (Mw) earthquake in the South Island of New Zealand. It happened two minutes after midnight on 14 November 2016 NZDT (11:02 on 13 November UTC).
The epicentre where shaking started was about 15 kilometres (9 mi) north-east of Culverden and 60 kilometres (37 mi) south-west of the tourist town of Kaikoura.
The epicentre was about 15 kilometres deep (9 mi).
The earthquake lasted for more than a minute, and was one of the three largest earthquakes in 2016.

the quake did road users a favor there.a modern highway now instead of a narrow winding track.thanks Geoff for the video.
It was a standard width highway before, hardly a 'track', but I agree it is a lot better now.
That road looks like it has not been used for quite a while. Where it narrows, it appears to be more of a drainage channel.
Was that the stream channel, where they had to maintain access for seals, or something?

Well spotted!! The white ones definitely an animal, and way more likely goat than sheep. I'm not so sure about the black one.
