About 30 years ago, I visited NZ and with two associates we rented a small float plane which flew us inside White Island volcano. The pilot told us if we flew through the smoke the engine would stop, so we told him to "get the f..k out of there".
I still have photos looking up at the rim from inside the volcano. I also remember that as when we flew back to the base the black swans scattered in front of the plane as we were landing. Good times, good memories.

1:25 that sound it's terrific loud. The amount of pressure being released it's absurd, a never ending blast of ash and gas coming out.......totally unbelievable this crater was allowed for visitors in the previous years.
In case you didn't know and know this island for the 1st time, It's White Island in New Zealand and in the previous you could visit this volcano and have some trekking to the heart of the crater, even knowing it was an active volcano. A few years ago, the island suffered a severe eruption and many visitors lost their life inside the crater.
There's a documental video about that success on Netflix or Amazon Video, can't remember exactly which one is really. But shows the tragic event told from relatives and some survivors.

    • @uncletiggermclaren7592

The drone has has a microphone aboard, because they wanted to capture the noise of the vent. The rotor sound is not apparent while it is close to the vet, because the sheer power of the volcanoes noise drowns out the rotor sound.
If you doubt that, watch the video again, and note the sound being captured BEFORE the rotor starts running.

I expect it was unable to fly for some reason when Whakaari erupted in 2019 and killed some people and injured so many more.
White Island volcanic eruption of 2019, volcanic eruption on December 9, 2019, on Whakaari/White Island, located off the coast of eastern North Island, New Zealand, which resulted in the deaths of 22 individuals and injured numerous others. At the time of the eruption, 47 people (adventure tourists and guides) were on the uninhabited island. Most of the visitors were from Australia, but some of them were from the United States, Germany, New Zealand, China, and other countries. Many were passengers on a cruise ship that had docked nearby to allow sightseeing excursions. The eruption lasted approximately two minutes. In the aftermath of the tragedy, visits to the island were suspended.

    • @koharumi1

The ash probably damaged the engine during the 2019 eruption of Whakaari. So after, it couldn't fly. With all the people needing evac, the helicopter was left behind. And no one ever went back for it after.

    • @badgercdlyons

Brilliant video. It's nice to see updates on this beautiful but volatile mariine volcano. I suppose all foot traffic is banned now since the eruption. It's a shame but understandable. Looking at the landmass, I still fail to see how the 2 missing victims could be washed away in a rain storm that followed the eruption. It doesn't seem feasible to me. However, deadly, it certainly can be as proved. Hope to see trips starting in the future, wouldn't hold my breath, though! Do the Buttles still own this island, or have they sold it on? No doubt it's brought them millions in landing fee's. It is possibly no longer insurable to have any member of public set foot on it.. Who would know if the odd trespasser had a boat? The rebellion in me says I would if I had a boat, what's stopping them?? Common Sense... Drones are much safer.

Hopefully never. People passed away and got seriously injured there.

Was that one of the tour choppers that got left behind. Do you think it will blow the top off the crator.
Thanks for your incredible work you do.

Just to clarify, was that an alpaca gliding over the water in the early part of the video? 🙂 Good video, thanks!

Geoff, it’s great footage which I’m sure GNS is grateful for. But isn’t there an exclusion zone around Whakaari? I know you’re not allowed to step onto the island, but it seems risky to be able to get within metres of the shore… especially while it is actively erupting. Take care mate, no one needs more people getting hurt.
