5:20 The sealed area on the far side of the road led to a track beside the creek, where visitors could walk a couple of hundred metres to a pool at the base of a waterfall and watch baby seals playing while their mothers were out at sea. This is part of the Ohau Point seal colony, that was destroyed by the earthquake, but the seals are back now. The road and railway line have been rebuilt and a large parking area provided where visitors can overlook the colony and seals resting on the rocks below. I don't know if the seal pups can still access the pool. Possibly not, as there are a lot of them on the rocks now. Parts the coastline, north of Kaikoura, were uplifted up the three metres and now grass grows where the waves once washed over the rocks. Rocks further out to sea have plimsol lines on them, well above the waterline, showing where they were submerged before the earthquake.
Expat who missed all this. As a surfer who regularly travelled to Mangamaunu and other places from Christchurch in the 1960's along this road, I'm amazed at the sheer destruction. Also just as amazing is having visited the area after most of the incredible restoration work had been done.......
1:19 I was on that road with my friend half an hour before the earthquake. I could of been trapped there away from my family for months. I'm praying to everyone that was seriously involved in the earthquake. 🙏 I live 1 hour away from here so I felt the earthquake really strong at my house. I hope everyone is OK
Scariest night of my life! It felt like at quake rolled for hours!!!! I remember my entire family just ended up sitting around our kitchen table at 1am coz no one could go back to sleep then at 3am we were evacuated with the tsunami warning...terrifying!
That's hard to say, because in some places there are some very big slips to remove and once that's done, the hillsides have to be stabilized to stop any further slips coming down. so that could take some time...... The Railway might take longer because the line has to be smooth, level and straight, unlike the road which can be a bit bumpy for a while just to get traffic rolling again
Clementine .Thanks. Over in March for a self guided 16 day ride with three mates. 4500 klm of NZ South Island bliss. The east coast was going to be part of the route, but clearly that may change. If you gets a heads up on when, a message would be appreciated. Cheers, Peter.
I really get the feeling this is the copyright of 2017 WHITE BUS FAMILY PRODUCTIONS.................. It was only posted most of the video. VERY annoying to see it covering the scene.
@@clementine2681 I do not and never have done that. Wow, if you didn't want it "pirated" then why did you bother to put it here in the first place? AND IT WAS VERY ANNOYING LOOKING AT IT COVERING THE SCENERY.
No, We did it in 1080, Because 4k cannot handle the fast movement with its slow framerate This was filmed using 60 frames, whereupon 4k only goes as high as 30 frames, 4k is alright when there is not fast movement.
Clementine i find it boring because the video footage is repeated over the course of the segement you have uploaded. Also there is only scant commentary explaining the terrain damaged .
@@muzzamoose I'm sorry that you have missed the point of our short video. It was only made to show the earthquake damaged before any repairs were made to the road and railway line. This video is the only clear record that shows what happened in this location. As for the commentary, the description above tells one where it is.

That welded rail sure held up well! A testament to the skill of the welders and engineers who built that railroad!
excellent footage and an important historical record as well. great effort!
Thank you :-)
Beautiful video and music.
Excellent clip.
I been in a minor shake it is very scary especially when you see the ground and trees moving like a blanket being tossed

Excellent video, amazing footage. One small crit - please omit the 'Copyright 2017' etc watermark right across the bottom of the screen.

is there a copyright on that video?
Yes, there is.
Now the road is open, do it again, and use a split screen to show the repair ?
Thank you for your comment. We have got a surprise coming up shortly :-)

Unreal footage, hard to believe that it's open again. What a job
Beautiful music - name please.
Thank you and yes it's Whispering Sea
Thanks for the share. Any "local" word on when the road from Kaikoura to Picton is expected to be re-open.
Cheers Peter (West Islander) Melbourne Oz

You can still get into Kaikoura, but you have to come from the south

By your attitude, I really get the feeling that you wanted to pirate the video........and it's on there to stop just that

@@killsalive1 yep. Music is
loud and annoying too. Didn't make it past the 3min mark.
Wow, that's crazy! Added this to the blog!
Thank you, I am glad you liked it 😊
How about a comparison after 4 years of reconstruction?
We have been thinking of doing another one once the road is completely finished and all the roadworks gone.
3:06 we where on this road as it hit scard me shitless
What drone and cam are you using?
An Inspire 1 with the standard camera
Hi there. Great footage! Any chance you recorded this in 4K? thanks Sid

Great. Thanks for getting back so quickly.

That was scary! .. I thought I was going to die!... thanks from Wgtn🤔
I slept through it!
you are so Beautiful
She still beautiful.
Immagini incantevoli, sembra di vivere come spirito libero dei venti che volano sulla terra.
Thank you 😊
realmente espetacular
It surely is!
Yep it's a White Bus Family thing with pretty insipid music showing something which could have been dramatic!
It's the fucking waiau earthquake, not kaikoura
I totally calm down
Sorry what does that mean??
Amazing..
Thank you
It was 6.6 , not 7,smth:))discovered later on..
Lana M it was 7.8
Quite boring
