    This set of tools is good enough to build a small rocketship :)
    Seriously, I made a device like this a few yers ago. It wasn't that sophisticated but did the job. I used modified PC power supply as current source.
    Attention those who are going to repeat the design from this video -- make sure there is at least one gap betwen hollow profile and aluminum parts tht hold wire ends so this profile doesn't short the wire.

    Elegant build. I wouldn't change a thing. The lack of insulation at the ends of the heater strip aren't an issue, as both ends would have to short at the same time for that to cause a problem, and the only problem would be that the current would flow through the aluminum channel rather than the nichrome wire. No damage to the power supply and the overall power output and heat would actually go down, not up. Harmless at 9v with a constant current supply.

    Nobody seemed to mention that this design while elegant cannot easily bend acute angles tighter than 90 degrees.....the hold bar could be a dull knife edge style in my opinion and the hinges set appropriately to achieve acute angles. Great build as others have said, just bought the wire to build one myself but with the above mentioned modifications.

    Cool build. You should add a 45 deg stop on the hold down or the bending handle would give it more functionality. Maybe just and insert with 2 deg 22.5 and 45

  • @FoxNixon

    It seems you and your power supply are not afraid of short circuit) Probably it would be better to add some isolation between aluminum angles that hold the springs and aluminum profile between them;)
    Anyway, the construction looks pretty good. Great relaxing video, as always, thanks for the content))

    When the thickness of the acrylplate is changing, don´t you have to change the distance of the 2 screws with the "holding-alu-4square-rod" to the hot wire, because the radius is also changing?

    Wonderful and informative video - easily the best heat bender I have seen on UA-cam.
    One suggestion: the current for the heater wire flows through the springs meant to keep it under tension. The heating and cooling cycles may over time anneal the springs and cause the heater wire to become slack (see How To Mechatronics/Arduino CNC Hot Wire cutter video). I would try to use some kind of crimp or screw connection of the power wires to the heating element, just where the wire attaches to the spring. Some kind of thermal insulator (perhaps a collection of mica or ceramic washers) could also be used to thermally isolate the heater wire from the springs. Obviously, a slack wire inside the aluminum channel would not be as big a deal as a loose hot wire cutter; but if it sagged enough to touch the channel it could short out sections of the heater wire resulting in “cold” spots.
    Just a friendly suggestion for an otherwise fantastic build.

      i followed a different guy's vid. this one has a hold down which is better. You are right in that the current doesn't need to go thru the springs. they just keep tension on the wire as it expands

    • @badmotherhumper
      @badmotherhumper 2 роки тому

      @@r.t.elangovanr.t.elangovan6792 How thick of acrylic can you bend with this gauge wire, Will it soften 8mm?

    • @DiegoSynth
      @DiegoSynth Рік тому

      Yes, that exactly. Plus it may make super hot the springs, nut, screw, etc, not only meaning expansion / contraction of the materials but very high temperature in case of accidental touch. I was surprised all this part is not insulated / enclosed.
      Leaving that out, it's a great idea and fantastic execution!
