  • One morning on our way out for the day, we tried to open the garage door but the opener pulled out of the door and broke the door mount. We ended up fixing it with a simple replacement bracket that will actually hold up over time.

He told me that door need to be changed and it will cost me $2200 if I dont want to change the door then I have to get the panels changed and it will cost $1200. But thanks to your video. I fixed my door by fixing $15 incl. taxes :) Thanks again!

    This happened to my VERY heavy 24" panel garage door a couple of days ago. This video helped me confirm what I assumed about attaching this reinforcement bracket to my garage door. I bought this same bracket from Amazon (Loews has it stocked also) with a Prime delivery the next day. My only issue with it is that I had to drill a couple of new holes in the bracket, as the installer of my garage door was not the best judge in placing a couple of the sheet metal screws when he installed it originally. I am handy, so this is not an issue, but it would have been nice not having to pull out my drill and bits to put more holes into the sheet metal. I had to also put shim washers on the J-hook to keep it from moving sideways during opening and closing. The J-hook pin can travel the full length of the pin on my screw opener. And...of course the opener track in not quite centered on the center of the garage door (about an inch off center), so these washers help keep the J-hook from moving back and forth on the bracket J-hook pin. What an improvement from what the Genie garage door opener came with. I am appalled that they garaged door companies use 2-3 sheet metal screws to move a VERY heavy garage door. For what these reinforcing brackets cost to make, they should include them with the new openers. Garage door service people no doubt carry a bracket with them to repair this design flaw from the GD manufactures. I am going to replace my other garage door bracket with the same very soon. Great repair fix. Thanks for the video. Everyone's install will be a little different it appears, but manageable.

    So I am really glad that you went with this kind of fixed it’s a really good fix but if you want to go beyond this fixed I would recommend disengaging your garage door from the opener look in the garage door to see how heavy it is if it’s really heavy that’s why it got ripped out the first time and it’s cheap metal of course it’s going to break overtime and adjust the door arm to a little bit more of an angle go up maybe one or two holes on the door arm and then adjust the up and down limit on the side of your lift master 3280 Belt Drive

  • @stevenradcliffe9772

    I had this problem this morning too. My door is vintage 1989, with a foam core construction. The inside metal "laminate" for lack of a better term, pulled off the foam core. I have nothing to screw to, so I'll need to through-bolt from the outside and use a piece of stainless or some other metal flat bar to bolt through so I have support for the inside bracket. I'd rather not have the outside hardware but don't see an option beyond replacing the entire door.

    • @TopHomeowner
      @TopHomeowner  3 роки тому +2

      If all of the panels are identical, you might be able to take them off and swap the panels (move the panel below it to the top). It would be some work, but you could avoid putting a bolt through to the outside if it does. Good luck!

    • @stevenradcliffe9772
      @stevenradcliffe9772 3 роки тому +1

      @@TopHomeowner Good idea... Why didn't I think of that? They all appear to be identical. Wondering tho, because I'll have to use the same screw holes if they will snug up as they should. If not, I guess some wood filler would fix that problem.

  • @onyourbloccK

    • @TopHomeowner

      If the arm isn't in the same place as the old one (higher or lower), you might need to just adjust how far the garage door opener "travels". Our problem was how it was initially installed...directly into the door. We had done some research and found that it was a common problem where they didn't use reinforcement. We also noticed that previous to our owning the property that the door may have been raised while in locked position that may have weakened it. And yes someone can get seriously injured.
