  • A garage door strut is a metal piece designed to provide horizontal strength and rigidity to a garage door panel. Many doors come standard with a strut across the top panel of the garage door. This strut when across the top section helps to support the door during opening and closing using a electric garage door opener.
Many times we go out on calls because a garage door is sagging or bent. This can be caused by many things including hitting the garage door with your car. In some cases we can install a strut to straighten and support the damaged garage door section. With the strut installed properly the garage door will function smoothly without any sagging or binding.
If the panel is severely damaged or has tears in the steel, many times it is better to replace the garage door section if manufacturer and model numbers can be determined, and the section is still available. There are usually stickers on the sides of the garage door that list manufacturer and model number. If these stickers are not available, it can be difficult to identify manufacturer and model number. Sometimes garage door service companies can identify the manufacturer and model number even if the stickers are not available.
If you are adding a strut it is important to check the garage door balance. Adding a strut to a garage door is adding weight to a garage door, with the added weight you may need to adjust or replace the spring(s) to accommodate for the added weight.
    For example:
A standard 16 foot strut weighs about 12-15 pounds so the spring will at minimum need to be adjusted, and it is not uncommon to have to replace the spring(s) when a strut is added to the garage door.
When a garage door has been damaged a requires a strut to provide the needed rigidity and structural support to a section, it is always a temporary fix and eventually the panel will fail. Depending on the amount of damage a strut can be a good option and the garage door can last many more years. If the garage door is more severely damaged, the strut may only add a short amount of time before the section fails. It is important to consider the length of time being added to the garage door when deciding between a strut and a new section or door.

Nice video! I was just wondering how to fix the sag in our top panel, when I came across the garage door strut solution. Now I know how to install it thanks to you. Much appreciated!

I filled my 4 struts with spray foam a day before installing them. The door is filled with foil-faced foam-board and then spray foamed around the perimeter of each insert. The trick is to mount the foam-board with construction adhesive 2 or 3 days prior to doing the rest with spray foam. (A table saw is handy to cut the foam perfectly so you can press-fit it into the openings)
I'm sure somebody will back their car into it now 😀

Thanks. Incredibly valuable info for a DIY'r ...I was about to install the struts on my own, but now I need to make sure a pro calibrates the spring (since I'm not going there). Best

If you know the history of the spring(s), you can get an estimate of how much life is left. Maybe not from the tech, but you can use online calculators to do it.

I have three struts on my garage door and the very bottom one kind of misses my cars license plate by few cms. Can I removed the bottom panel strut complete and just have 2 instead of 3? I have a 16 feet long door.

Any help finding these in NJ would be amazing. My Mom's garage door is 15 years old and buckling at the bottom. (16' Door) Her neighbor had 2 struts installed for $500, $200 for parts and $300 labor. I cant find the hardware alone for less that $200/piece! Please help!

Would you please how to replace the vertical struts? The rivets on my struts are beginning to pop out and the hole is enlarged and the existing factory strut needs to be replaced.

Try using some self tapping screws and big washers along with some subfloor construction adhesive to bond it all together. Just don't use the door for a day or 2.

So, . . . did you make new holes along the bottom? Or did you reuse the original holes for the top of the roller brackets? I get the impression the J-bar bracket used a new hole as you implied it was lower (adjusted the length of the J-bar). Is that correct?

So my garage is a little snug for my truck as is. I literally have to touch the back wall with my bumper.
I'm wondering, if I there is a possible to put flat metal on there in place of the 2in strut? I want to get a push bar on my truck and I'm worried the struts will hit or rub up against it. I have maybe 8-10ins to play with.

The strut on the bottom of the door hits my car roof rack when opened. can i cut a section out of it without compromising the door strength?

It is best to refer to the owner's manual where it explains how to adjust the garage door unit to adjust the point where it stops the up motion.

My garage closed on something and now it’s sagging in the top middle. Was quoted $600 to replace the top strut to fix it! Do you think replacing that too strut and maybe adding one at the bottom of the top row of panels could fix this issue? Thanks!

It's worth a try. They're not that expensive. I used these and some right angle steel on the top edge of the door (for the entire width of the door) and it's much stronger than before it was damaged. (it was frozen to the floor and the door opener bent it 😐)

Hello I had a question. This doesn’t look like it would work for lower panels do to the middle Hinges being in the way.
I notice the strut pops out towards you being in the way of the hinges.
Wanted to see if this is the case for the lower panels

    • @l337pwnage
      @l337pwnage 4 роки тому

on lower panels, they are not put at the edge, but just next to the hinges. If you look at enough garage door vids, you can see the ones that are in high-wind locations, they'll have two struts per panel.

They are pretty thin. Sorry for not having a number. They are basically galvanized sheet metal. The strength comes from the U shape, which, when you screw to the door, creates a "box" and that design makes it hard to bend. You can see it flop around as he is installing it, a 16'er will flop a lot more, but once it's screwed down, they are really hard to flex even at their weakest points.
