Very informative video Adam. My wife and I have had BCIs, kings, corns, haitian boas, garters, hognoses, and burms. Ball pythons will ALWAYS be our favorite. Thanks 👍🏾 for all of your hard work and dedication to our community 🇺🇸🇨🇦.
I think Ball Pythons are soooo beautiful, but the hunger strike thing concerns me. Thanks for this list!! A Children's Python is for sure in my future! 😁🐍
From my experience, hungerstrikes are often (but not always), because they are being fed too big of rodents. I've worked with two ball pythons, Juvie and Addie. Juvie will never reject a meal, and readily takes her small rat every three weeks. Addie would often go on hungerstrikes and wouldn't eat very often. However, Addie was more willing to eat when offered a hopper mouse instead of a rat. Similarly, our kenyan sand boa was known to go on hungerstrikes up to eight months at a time. Many times people would feed him small mice and he wouldn't accept, but I've had a lot of luck feeding him pinkies instead. Our policy has since changed so that the sand boa is fed two pinkies every 14 days instead of one small mouse every 14 days.
I love ball pythons 😊 so what if everyone has one? If you want something "different" Id recommend a different morph there are so many rad ones! Just be prepared to spend $$. Ball pythons are so docile and make awesome pets. Personally I like snakes that arent too crazy, I like when they just sit and hang out with me. 🐍❤
My BP is definitely the exception to a lot of the cons listed here lol. She's active, she's got a strong feeding response, rarely goes on hunger strikes. When she was smaller if she struck and missed she'd scare herself out of eating that night and would need to be offered food again the next day but otherwise just super responsive. Usually a couple hours before I head to bed she's up against the enclosure doors being nosy.
Yeah, once you pick them up. That's my problem with them. I love watching reptiles interact with their environment. All I see ball pythons do while in their cage when not eating is slither to a new spot to sit in. Very boring, but everyone has their things 🤷
@@floater9873 If they have enrichment in their enclosures, and you keep things interesting for them, they will absolutely move around and enjoy every bit of it.

Dude when you mentioned Anterasia (Meculosa, Perthensis, Stimsoni, and Childreni) I jumped for joy. Seriously under rated snakes in the states. They eat so well and handle so nice. They'd eat every day and every time if you let them (don't over feed, please). Plus they exhibit more curiosity, intelligence (like Boelens ) and they are straight FUN to handle. They grip and move like Colubrids. There is a few morphs in the states and I hope to be one of the ones to expand on this with my growing breeding collection. They have a gorgeous iridescence like the better known Columbian and Brazilian rainbow boas. Morphs in states to my knowledge include Granite, Patternless, and I believe the crazy occasional anomaly. Alot more true localities and morphs in Australia. They also give very telling signs when gravid and they a super hardy little snake. Also if anyone for husbandry is curious they do not finger paint or defecate like Indigos, and much smaller amounts so spot cleaning is a breeze. Very rewarding species and GREAT starter snake. Just a bit of info for anyone wondering.
I think you've mentioned them before, but House Snakes are pretty cool too. And the morphs are awesome. Seem to be readily available here (South Africa) which is where they are from so I know that will make a difference to availability elsewhere. My favourite morph is the T- Albino. From what I read they seem to be really awesome pets. Not sure why they aren't more popular. Love your channel!!!!!! 🐍
First of all, love your arm tattoo! For the Python bivittatus progschai: I kept them a couple years, they are known to be quite aggressive, although mine were not, but I got to know some real monsters, that won't be quite the alternative for "beginners". Most of morphs are also Mixes between normals and progschai. Also, I had a female that only ate chicks, no rats, no mice, so not that easy sometimes. Also, I don't think morphs make the animal, a normal Angolan is way cooler than a 1000€ ball python morph. What I'm trying to say, its not the morph, that clarifies the money in many animals, at this case it's rare, and that is what is cool. Besides that, great video and nice suggestions, this just should be constructive/positive criticism 😁😅
I love snakes so much. When I move out, I'm a bit concerned, that my apartment will be full of them. Especially Hognoses, Ball Pythons and Garters are on my top list. I just don't understand, why some people are afraid of snakes so much, they're so adorable. Those beauties on this List might get added to mine. Especially the dwarf burmese sounds interesting to me. Definitely a nice list of alternative options to the very popular ball python. The childrens python and it’s relatives are a good choice that is not so well known only until recently. The only thing I think was missing was the carpet python. They reach a solid length and not too large(except the coastal), have great temperaments, are solid feeders with the same care requirements as other pythons, plus they are not so expensive. To add they have so many varieties - Bredli, Darwin’s, jungle, zebra, jaguar, Iryan Jaya, albino’s, diamond and other localities. It is one of my favorites and I’ve had 3 of them, all were pleasant to keep and I can’t help but recommend them.
✋I can't watch live feedings. I know it is nature, but the reason I have gotten this far with my reptile phobias was the introduction of Frozen/Thawed. Great episode!
I have always liked the body and head shape of a Burmese python and I really like ball pythons the dwarf Burmese looked amazing and it doesn’t get really big like the normal ones do it sounds amazing, might be a next snake all thanks to you, great content keep it up.
I had chosen a Dumeril's over a Ball Python as I was afraid of the infamous hunger strikes, but in the end the Dumeril I got was super nervous, bitey and had hunger strikes. Ended up giving it away to a very experienced keeper and rescued a Ball python...which is a very ravenous eater and I am in love with it's personality! Everything depends on the snake's individual personnality.
I really enjoyed this video because sometimes ball pythons don't make the best pet so I really like how you made an "alternative video" P.S.- Yay! Almost 100k! :)
I have a caulker cay boa. BI dwarf like the BC one described in the video. Great temperament, great personality, never misses a meal, and super easy to handle!! Would love to find a male to breed with her, but hard to find. Got her almost 3 years ago and paid 250 for her.
I've had basically all of these on my dream reptile list- except for the Australian pythons (just not my preference). However, because I live in NY where burms are illegal, I've NEVER heard of dwarf burms. And since I am disabled, I had sworn off anything larger than a boa- now I can officially add dwarf burms to my dream reptile list😭
OMG the IHOP joke killed me.....thanks for this vid, I'm currently building / setting up a Bioactive terrarium, was planning on a Ball Python, but you've given me some food for thought.
In the early and mid 90s everywhere had Burmese Pythons piled on top of eachother, it was crazy, stores were constantly getting them back because customers didn’t think they would get so big lol.
I got introduced to retics the exact same way! 98 i got one from a trade and dude told me it would be 4-5 feet I ended up having him for 6 years before I had to give him up at about 11-12 feet 🤣
@@jdssurf maybe you should check out yellow anacondas, very similar species but they don’t get nearly as big, about the size of a BCI. I briefly looked into them out of curiosity one time.
Antaresia, yes!! I just got a female Spotted off Craigslist for $80 with the enclosure included. She’s in quarantine now and doing great. Now I have a pair of Spotted’s and a pair of Children’s. Love em 🐍
@@WickensWickedReptiles thanks man!! I watch all of your videos and always get excited when you talk about Antaresia. Other than the (extremely expensive) Boelen’s Python they’re my favorite snakes.
I thought Rosy Boas would be on this list, but I didn't know they stayed that small! I've heard really good things about them, but I'm in a high humidity area so I never really looked at them. I've started to hear from some people that sand boas are more interesting than I thought they'd be, but those are definitely too small for this list. It has made them move up on my interest list tho. Dumeril's boa is still at the top, but it's not going to happen until I have space for an adult enclosure. Plus first I want to upgrade both of my ball python enclosures. It's important to do the best I can for the ones I have first! I actually like Childrens pythons more than Spotted pythons because I enjoy their more subtle coloration, and plain head. They really are like a colubrid python. I really gotta work with my boy more, he's got sass. I have trouble getting him out, because if he doesn't want to I can't get him out, since there's a lot of decor in his enclosure he will dart behind and I don't want to scare him. He's done great with target training for feeding. He still bites me sometimes tho (but I barely feel it.) He is super curious and will come out if I talk to him, but then he's like "no food? boring!" and leaves. I open his enclosure for a bit and just put my hand in so I do a lot of interaction other than feeding time.
Have you heard of all of these ball python substitutes?
This was the video for me... for an... uncommon reason

I’ve never even seen a dumerils boa in person yet but I’m already obsessed with them!
they are so cool!
✋I can't watch live feedings. I know it is nature, but the reason I have gotten this far with my reptile phobias was the introduction of Frozen/Thawed. Great episode!
Yes, there absolutely will be more talk about dwarf boas on UA-cam soon! :D You could easily make a part 2 to this list. Great options!
Thanks for the idea!
True regarding the curiosity of Burms. The ones I’ve seen all seen all seemed very curious.
Oooo that Hog Island Boa is just beautiful. 🐍
100% agree
I have always liked the body and head shape of a Burmese python and I really like ball pythons the dwarf Burmese looked amazing and it doesn’t get really big like the normal ones do it sounds amazing, might be a next snake all thanks to you, great content keep it up.
Do a list of the top ten snakes that need high humidity (75%+)
good idea
Ok that clip of Pikachu under the red light at 1:08 is an awesome shot! His pattern really comes to life under the light
This is actually Thunder, she sure is stunning!
I love ball pythons so much but I love snakes in general this list is really wonderful I love all of your content
thanks so much!
Still trying to find the perfect 🐍 for my lifestyle. Thanks for giving me extra options I didn't know😁
You got this!
Hope you reach 1M soon, you have the best reptile videos!!!!
thanks so much!
Your channel is exploding! Almost 100k subs. Well deserved for the quality content.
::knock on wood:: but I’ve had my bp for 2 years now and she’s never once refused food. I know this isn’t common but I’m thankful for it 😅
“Burms are trashcans”
Noodle: 👁👅👁 “HEY!”
yep
I still want a ball python, but this was very interesting and informative.
Your enthusiasm and ethics (you encourage frozen thawed food and captive bred pets) made this a very enjoyable video to watch....
Uh oh. Angolan pythons... That's a new one to add to the list... 🐍
Oh yes! they are amazing
"burmese pythons are trashcans!"
Snake: *LISTEN HERE YOU LITTLE-*
hahahhaa!Q
I really enjoyed this video because sometimes ball pythons don't make the best pet so I really like how you made an "alternative video"
P.S.- Yay! Almost 100k! :)
Awesome! Thank you!
@@WickensWickedReptiles Anytime :)
Well this was one reasonabke video about Ball Pyhtons and their counterparts
Also hope you have a good day Wicken.
Now I want one of each AND another ball python 🐍 Thank you for such fantastic content!
Our pleasure!
I love watching videos showing different 🐍 they have such beautiful patterns on them.
god why.... I promised myself I'm getting no more🐍this year... And now I'm seeing this... I mean, they are just too charming
hahahaa
I have a caulker cay boa. BI dwarf like the BC one described in the video. Great temperament, great personality, never misses a meal, and super easy to handle!! Would love to find a male to breed with her, but hard to find. Got her almost 3 years ago and paid 250 for her.
I was sad to see that whilst the thumbnail includes a Bismarck Ringed Python, there wasn't actually any in the video 😭 Bizzys need more love
maybe part II?
@@WickensWickedReptiles oh definitely! They're one of my wishlist reptiles and they definitely need more love :D
Every time I watch a video of yours about snakes...you make me really consider getting one. 🐍
I've had basically all of these on my dream reptile list- except for the Australian pythons (just not my preference). However, because I live in NY where burms are illegal, I've NEVER heard of dwarf burms. And since I am disabled, I had sworn off anything larger than a boa- now I can officially add dwarf burms to my dream reptile list😭
that's awesome!
OMG the IHOP joke killed me.....thanks for this vid, I'm currently building / setting up a Bioactive terrarium, was planning on a Ball Python, but you've given me some food for thought.
glad this helped :)
*#1 Positive Feature about Ball Pythons:*
Snickering immaturely when people refer to them as just "balls"! 😆
bruh, look at these balls!
Great suggestions! Now I need to find a Dumerils Boa because I am obsessed! 🐍🐍🐍
we have a dumerils at the family owned pet store I work at, it was a surrender we took in. I love how big and chunky it is.
amazing boas
🐍 loved the video Adam , keep up the good work
Thanks! Will do!
I just love when Adam says “stick around” gives me some nice predator vibes.
oh geeez
Awesome today's vídeo. I'm glad you mentioned Hog Island boas.
More to come!
Surprised Aurora didn't strongarm you into including boa sigma, haha. Great list and I agree with all of them! I can't even think of any I'd add!
People: ball pythons don't move around alot
Pikachu: hold my tail...no realy hold it so I don't fall
Awesome information! I have 4 ball pythons that I adore, but have been looking for my next snake~
Go for it!
@@kingdre7492 ah lol sucks................now I’m researching green anacondas lol, but shouldn’t be lol
@@jdssurf maybe you should check out yellow anacondas, very similar species but they don’t get nearly as big, about the size of a BCI. I briefly looked into them out of curiosity one time.
My girl Luna will forever be my favorite snake I have ever owned, she is blue eyed Lucy BUT I love other snakes that are more interactive too
I love it wicked wickens reptile have a great day have a cool day have a super day wicked wickens reptile
Same to you
I bought a bredding pair of hog Island boats 15 years ago for 200. Spent 10 years breeding them before I quit. Great snakes.
That is awesome!
Antaresia, yes!! I just got a female Spotted off Craigslist for $80 with the enclosure included. She’s in quarantine now and doing great. Now I have a pair of Spotted’s and a pair of Children’s. Love em 🐍
That is awesome!
🐍 Trying for that teeshirt! Love the vlog! Good topic! Have a super week!
Awesome! Thank you!
Planning on getting a snake after college. Ive wanted one for a long time, but your channel is what really got me interested! 🐍 🐍 🐍
I have to know what the orange and black snake in the thumbnail was, that looked beautiful!
Bismarck ringed python
@@WickensWickedReptiles Thanks! I need to look into that its absolutely gorgeous, but why wasn't it on the list if it was on the thumbnail?
