I did most of the jobs shown here,Chrome Paste,Chrome Finish, Spray Machine feeder tender Assistant operator operator, Toggle,buffing and the paddle wheels briefly(Thank God), Hide house,Beam House, Wringer, wet & dry Shave, Measuring machine. We replaced the paddle wheels with cement mixers. We did cow hides for automotive seats.We did shoe leather called Spits. We did up to 50,000 hides weekly. The fleshing machine was gone as it was done at the rendering plant.I ran the embossing machine to put various hide patterns such as ostrich. The tannery here tans smaller animals such as pigs etc. EOLC was union and my wages were $10.92 to $14.00 per hour plus benefits.

They'd salt the hides and pack them on skids. The rotten egg smell is Hydrogen Sulfide gas being released from the chemicals(Sodium Sulfa Hydrate, Sulfuric Acid, Formic Acid.quick lime ect) to burn the hair off the hides. This is vented through the roof. I'm trying to think how the smell of raw hides smell. But it's not the rotten egg smell you'd think.I guess I'd say it smells like wet lime. The Blue Chrome for tanning also has a smell. Once you are in there,you get used to the smell and you don't notice it so much. As the hides get further processed,those smells diminish. The finished leather really doesn't have a smell. I worked mainly in the "Dry End"where the hides are already tanned and the finish sprayed on. When I started at EOLC in 1977, we used Lacquer based finish., The R107 Lacquer thinner was quite strong and I could still smell it 4 hours after I left. EOLC invented water based finish because of the EPA emissions standards being increased. That "Leather Smell"you enjoy is not from the hide, but from a chemical I made called "Aroma". When I worked in the hide house, I had to leave my work clothes in the utility room because of the smell.There was a end of shift shower time to take a shower, and get in your street clothes.

In Tamilnadu, Common Effluent Treatment Plants are set up with government subsidy. Now a days, Reverse Osmosis method is used which obviates Zero Discharge Effluent. Drastically reduces fresh water requirements.

Does it smell having raw hide around you all day? Just curious what does it smell like?
