  • Shane and Dom take you inside the largest vegetable tanned leather tannery in the world.
    Vegetable tanned leather is not just a sign of quality leather but also a sign of care for the environment. The process of vegetable tanning is an ancient technique used to tan leathers without the use of harmful chemicals that can affect the waterways and the ecosystem that surrounds the tanneries.
    We went to Mexico to explore the largest vegetable tanned leather tannery in the world. Making over 3,500 hides a day, this tannery displays the highest level of organization and knowledge with every part of their tanning process. While vegetable tanning isn't as well used as its modern processes, this tannery has been working on projects that could help its relevance in the industry with environmental developments that serve nature's best interest.

    It would be cool to know the leather from your shop that comes from here, and the name of the tannery! Was it difficult to get a tour?

      It really comes down to planning and being part of the leather industry. Not sure if it's open to the public

    Where is this place?

    Interesting video but your title is misleading. A tannery does not MAKE hides, the animal makes them. The correct verb to use for a tannery is "process".

    This really puts this into perspective. That's a lot of dead cattle. What is the carbon footprint for that many cows per year?

    • @lonsdaleleather
      @lonsdaleleather  3 місяці тому

      Definitely! It was a lot of leather hides being processed as well as already finished and stored. Really puts into the perspective of the size of the meat industry. If this is only for vegetable tanned leather, imagine the rest. We weren't able to get any info on carbon footprint, unfortunately
