The guardsman was indeed bait, but it was the marine using him.... not the tyrranids. The costumes are all real including the marine and the only CGI used are the tyrranids. It was fun to film. ;)

@@CombatVeteranReacts as for the Guardsman, his comms are limited to his squad or platoon at best. To contact anyone else he would need a Vox caster, looks roughly like the old school radios carried on a soldiers back.
Guardsmen, Cadian's more than most other regiments, adhere to a very strict and uncompromising chain of command. A Guardsman won't leave a man behind, but the Guard will.
Attrition rates for the Guard would make Staln's or Mao's look like a typical training casualty list.
Humans literally out number the stars, humanity can't waste time or effort on saving the one Guardsman that survived his unit being wiped out.
Thus why they get issued Lasguns, limited comms and the cheapest mass produced gear. Billions like him die every day and there are trillions more to replace him. More expendable than anything he isn't issued with.

2:56 - First a lore point. The Adeptus Munitorum (the logistics branch of the Imperial military) actually values a soldier's equipment more than the soldier himself. Losing your lasgun is an offence punishable by summary execution (just like cowardice and failing to properly shine your coat buttons). Secondly, most models of lasgun are fitted with a bayonet lug that the soldier can fit his combat knife to. A spear is a much more effective combat weapon than a dagger, so tossing his lasgun was a mistake there, too.

Tyranid strategy in direct combat is overwhelming numbers. The grunt-level Tyranids receive only the most basic of directions from whatever hive nexus is relaying imformation from the ships in orbit. They mostly are just used in human wave-style tactics. The Hive Mind reserves its advanced thinking and strategies for its best operators, the organisms that are meant to act like scalpels rather than hammers.
Another thing to remember about Gestalts is that they aren't really a single great mind except in rare exception. The Hive would have had to specifically evolve that trait universally across its entire genome range which would leave it open in other respects. The Tyranids are more of a Gestalt in the sense that they have the ability to connect, communicate, and coordinate across vast distances, forming a pseudo-superconsciousness within an area in which its organisms are concentrated. What this essentially means in plain English is that not every Tyranid organism is constantly in connection with the gestalt consciousness, it operates on animistic instincts programmed into it by the Hive's bio-engineering processes until it receives orders from whatever bioform is acting as a relay for the local swarm.
The Guardsman was basically facing a pack of incredibly efficient and well-sculpted predators, not the Hive Mind acting directly through those organisms as the Tyranids haven't really evolved that way.

The Tyranid Hive Mind does not actually direct every single bioform. The individual Tyranid organisms are actually quite autonomous, and will behave like wild animals of varying degrees of intelligence when not being actively ordered around. A single lower-ranking Tyranid organism in a standoff against a lone injured Guardsman does not warrant the attention of the Hive Mind, so the Tyranid will probably be left to act solely on instinct, especially if this is in the later stages of a successful counter assault where there might not be many synapse creatures extending the influence of the Hive Mind and relaying more specific orders.
This phenomenon is actually kind of terrifying, because the Tyranid vanguard can sometimes be sent so far ahead of the Hive Fleets that they will go feral and integrate with the local ecosystem; it's hinted that many of the exotic creatures found throughout the galaxy like the Fenrisian Kraken may be Tyranids that arrived in the Milky Way thousands or even millions of years ahead of the Hive Fleets.

Genestealers undermine the population and prepare the planet for invasion by infecting native lifeforms and establishing Genestealer Cults while Lictors gather limited intelligence to relay to the approaching Hive Fleets and eliminate threats before and during the invasion. They aren't feral beasts without the Synapse, but it's not like they have a direct link to the Hive Mind at all times either.

The best strategy to defeating the Tyranids, is to take out synapse bioforms, and get the remainder to kill themselves like the dumb animals they mostly are. Of course this varies. The more advanced bioforms are increasingly more intelligent by nature even without the synapse.

  • @N0-1_H3r3

Tyranid strategy is an unusual thing.
In some ways, it's more like a virus overwhelming an organism, except the organism is a planet. The smaller Tyranid war-beasts are essentially animals-Hormagaunts like those that appeared here are around 2.5m from snout to tail and weigh 200 kilos, and built just to hunt and kill, often finding dark places to skulk in while they stalk prey.
Some Tyranids have much greater independence of thought and higher intelligence, but they tend to be specialists serving particular tactical or battlefield roles.
Larger psychic Tyranids-known as Synapse Creatures-have a direct connection to the Hive Mind and can project control over the lesser beasts in their vicinity, overriding instincts and any sense of self-preservation. They tend to expend swarms of creatures with the same regard that a soldier might expend ammunition, using living tides of claws and fangs and venom to overwhelm defences.

If you're wondering why this space marine helped Raines consider the following: the space marine is from the Angels of Vengeance chapter, notoriously stubborn and who cannot accept failure.
So much so they have a history of suffering very heavy losses but at the same time they have achieved objectives thought unobtainable by almost everyone else.
So this particular marine sees Raines stand up with a busted leg, a fried Lasgun, against a group of hormogaunts with a piddling combat knife. He's not run or broken down, he is standing defiant, not accepting failure, embodying the AoV.

To the question at the end about the radio and switching channels and why he didn't do that: To normal humans, Space Marines are like Angels. Literal, godly angels. The vast majority of people that even know about their existence have never seen one. We have no context for this guardsman, but the most likely answer is that he is internally in awe at the marine, and assuming everything is OK and taken care of since the marine saved him. The guardsman assumes he doesn't need to do anything else but carry out the Emperor's will with one of the Emperor's Angels.

  • @StarboyXL9
    @StarboyXL9 3 роки тому +2

As for the Guardsman not searching different channels, its likely because command on the planet was breaking down. This likely is set in the "twilight" period of a Tyranid invasion where the last strongholds of resistance are being overrun and the majority of the planet belongs to the 'Nids. Thus the Guardsman would somewhat accurately assume that if his Commissar has fallen, the entire defense they were part of has also fallen and High Command itself is being overrun. Once the 'Nids break through your defenses that is usually all she wrote. They just keep coming and coming and coming and coming. An endless tide of teeth, spines, claws, and pincers. Its a soldier's nightmare fuel, if not everybody's nightmare fuel.
So he'd see no reason to waste time and attention searching for any other channels remaining because odds are there are none. They've all been silenced. Its just him making a final stand and trying to take as many of the enemy with him.

Individual creatures need to be in range of hive mind "nodes" for it to take over, usually the big tyrant prince or zoanthropes or other psychic bug. if they are not under the hive mind control they revert to default "instinctive behavior" and sometime that behavior can be "hide in the shadow". the hive mind also kind of behave like a normal mind where it can focus or be distracted, so it can be fooled up to some degree.

With regards to changing radio frequencies, the Guard is often more concerned with hierarchy and chain of command than efficiency. It varies from regiment to regiment but the lawful-stupid rigid command chain where you can't ever dream of proactively talking to anyone beyond your immediate superior is more Grimdark so it tends to be the most common. As such the Guardsman's radio was likely either hardwired to the frequency assigned for his platoon, or encrypted in such a way that even if he switched frequencies he was unlikely to be able to understand anything being said on any other frequencies, plus his trainers and Commissars likely would have put the fear of the Emperor into him about listening in on radio chatter he wasn't authorized to listen to.

Lasgun, one-shot is actually the same as getting hit by a 0.50 caliber incendiary, it is less powerful than a bolter but still very strong. The Lasgun works on most of the enemies the guardsmen are facing.
The closer the enemies are, the more powerful the impact.
I think you asked why the standard weapon of the guardsman cannot defeat a space marine on another video.
    - It can actually... if they are close and enough guardsmen are firing their weapons. If space marines are fighting guardsmen, they know the effective range of any lasguns, so the priorities to them are those guardsmen with Plasma weaponry or heavy gunner team.
Even a space marine will go under a cover if facing a wall of guardsmen in lasguns effective range.
I think it is 50m if wanted to damage their armor with normal charges and a kill shot if hitting a weak spot with an overload lasgun within 50m. Yes, 50 meters is not much. That is why they are jokingly called flashlights :/. but on any other enemies, non-human, it is 100-300 meters.
You can still kill an unarmored human from a longer range, like blow up their limps from more than 300m...

possible explanation about the coms question is that person to person range of imperial guards com units is very very limited (should still have tried but would probably not have found anything)
the short range is compensated by larger arrays at command posts or tanks boosting the signal, both in receiving and transmitting
in a city fight the signal would probably go from the guard to headquarters and then back to another unit in the city instead of from squad to squad directly
unless the squads have a dedicated com specialist with a booster backpack
so losing coms with the higher ups probably means your not going to get lucky finding someone more locally because if the big guys cant receive your signal their also not going to be able to boost your signal to find anyone else

As far as the radio (or "vox" as it's called) freqs goes, many Guardsmen are not allowed that level of initiative. It may never have occurred to him to change it, or if it did, he may have been taught that doing so may be a punishable offense. They've memorized certain rituals that operate specific functions. Like the idea of lubrication for moving parts is unknown, but if the sacred unguents aren't applied every cycle then the Machine Spirit gets angry and starts shrieking. At least in the old lore, not sure what's out there now. It was even unclear if the Mechanicus understood what they were doing or were just following procedures handed down from generation to generation, the technical principles becoming obscured by religious ritual over time.

I've also heard a story about a guy who argued with someone at a party, that other guy punched him in the back, then quickly left, but the spot got wet, so they checked and it was a puncture wound from a knife.
Interesting advice about using a tourniquet first and not removing things stuck in a wound.
When the hivemind is not microeing them, small Tyrannids are basically pack-hunting animals. They can be scared off by wounding them or killing a few, which the hive mind normally overrides.

The Emperor is watching over him and it is his duty to die standing. Defiant against Xenos until his final breath.
7:50 The issue is he knows if the Tyranids wanted him in that moment that he would have died regardless. The Xeno filth also known as Tyranids fight with no self preservation as if they die it is for the good of the hive. Having a firing weapon wouldn't be enough to stop Tyranids that want to attack you. Their standard technique being to overwhelm the enemy with numbers. Dying in the millions as their biomass will just be harvested after death.
8:17 Being shot is no deterrent to such foul xeno filth.
12:37 I'm unsure if a Tyranid would wait to attack on him to pull anyone out of hiding if they're winning. However an Angel of Vengeance will never accept anything except the best. He will stand against the whole of the Xeno horde if it is what it comes down to. So seeing a lone guardsmen stand up and prepare to face death for the glory of Emperor made this AoV feel something. For lack of better words he felt a kinship in that sense of I die for the Emperor. That would make him come in no matter what Xeno was preparing to stand against them. In that moment that guardsmen was a nearly going to be seen as a brother in the eyes of the AoV.

What we saw in the video looked like a bunch of turmagaunts, they are a melee-oriented subspecies of gaunt, and no sign of a synapse creature around, so they might have been operating on a low-level predatory instinctual intellect. When the guardsman fired several pulses from his lasrifle, he may have killed several of them and spooked the rest of the pack. At the end of the video, we heard, what I believe though I could be wrong, was a lictor, a specialized tyranid creature which has chameleonic abilities and possesses high-level intellect on the level of or near to that of a human's. Lictors hunt down leaders and other significant threats, kinda like an assassin, to launch decapitation strikes at the enemy in an attempt to not only take the leadership in a battlefield, but also remove some of the(mind the pun) fangs of enemy resistance. Lictors can(unless they've changed the lore) take command of lesser tyranid creatures which aren't under the control of a synapse creature. This particular lictor was probably already hunting the space marine and when he went to aid the guardsman, it took control of the turmagaunts to test the space marine and make him expend ammunition, then it sent out the trilling cry either as a challenge or to call for any other tyranid creatures in the vicinity for back up and aid.

Tactically wrong but what a good follower of the emperor might consider expected behavior as a righteous citizen or if they feel watched by the inquisition and seek to avoid being seen as a weak link for chaos to use behavior that borders on common sense and reflective at that point. Our brains naturally make shortcuts on things we consider solved like two plus two equals four so something as simple as hate and fear the xenos might have bled through and turned into a reflexive visceral reaction.
