- Hard to believe it's been 4 years since the release of the Sonic the Hedgehog Movie. Who would've thought the movie that started out as the internet's punching bag because a horrible design, would make it to theatres and become a blockbuster. Now we have a sequel, a soon to be release Knuckles Paramount + show, and a third movie that may be even better than the first two movies. I haven't seen the first movie since it was in theatres, so Richie and I sat down and watched the movie again after 4 years. Has our opinions on the film changed over time, stayed the same, sit back and see for yourselves. Also this is a first for me discussing a film like this, if you have opinions on the videos structure, leave comments down below. Just wanted to say thank you all for watching, liking, subscribing, and commenting on the video. I never imagined this many people watching in only a week. I try to read everyone’s comments and I love seeing your thoughts on the movie. Also commenting mistakes, yes I realize now Sonic’s legs have always been blue haha. Can we talk about how Ugly Sonic came back in Chip n' Dale Rescue Rangers?
Saw that movie too, loved ugly sonic’s inclusion. Not to mention it wasn’t just a one scene reference, he actually played a role in the plot. Ugly Sonic redeemed himself.

10:54 This conflict is one of the main things I look back on in reflecting about this first movie, and I think it's because it really does help push the friendship narrative. You also mentioned that neither Sonic nor Tom is in the wrong with their beliefs, and I think that's why it works.
We see that Tom feels secluded in this tiny town (deserted speed trap, helping ducks cross the road, jumpstarting cars in the winter) and wants to prove himself by becoming a cop in a big city, and although he'll get a chance to truly make a difference, it means leaving that tiny town, the friends of that community, and his family legacy. We see that Sonic values friendship and community at a very high level, which comes not only from the experience of being forced from his home, but also from being a part of Tom's same community. Every time Sonic speaks against Tom, it's always in favor of those values: a safe and peaceful community with life-long friends to care about.
Like I said, neither is in the wrong, but Tom changing his mind to stay in Green Hills should put into perspective just how valuable friendship truly is.

Honestly, I know people say the initial conflict between Sonic and Tom is really unnecessary or even forced... and it kind of is. That's what I thought the first couple of times I watched this movie. But I came to realise that Sonic is literally just a kid. Being a kid, he probably misunderstands what Tom wants, especially with his own added trauma of being forced to leave his home. Since Sonic is just a kid, he can't really understand Tom's desire to leave his home in search of more. All Sonic ever wanted was a place to belong and, to him, that place is Green Hill where he knows everybody and believes it's the one place where he can truly be at home. Added onto this, he admires Tom for his dedication to the town and looks up to him, but he doesn't understand the fact that Tom is someone with his own asperations. He sees Longclaw in Tom. Longclaw would never leave her home because she has a duty to Sonic. Sonic believes that Tom would never leave Green Hill because he has a duty to the town. Tom is most definitely not in the wrong for wanting to do more with his life, but Sonic doesn't see it that way since his world view is honestly really small and he doesn't understand the fact that other people have other asperations that might not align with his own. Sonic doesn't understand why Tom wants to leave since Green Hill is a sanctuary in Sonic's eyes. The reason Sonic gets so upset is because it kind of feels like a betrayal and he's already experienced the trauma of having a guardian leave without Sonic having much say in the matter. Especially since in that same scene, he literally says "And if I fall, just ditch me. You seem good at that." At face value, yeah, that's really childish and kind of unfair towards Tom. But, looking deeper into it, Sonic clearly feels like he doesn't belong anywhere in the world and the people that he looks up to seem to keep leaving him.
To put it bluntly, Sonic is still a kid that doesn't understand Tom, despite already claiming to be his best buddy even though Tom doesn't see it that way. That's why this is a conflict for him. Sonic struggles to get over his own trauma of not feeling like he belongs or is wanted by anyone. He hates the idea of being alone and having Tom leave feels like a betrayal to Sonic, even though Tom's goals are completely understandable. But Sonic still doesn't see it that way since he's just a kid that doesn't really understand this stuff.
But, even still, it didn't quite make it obvious enough in the film. I feel like Sonic should have made it more obvious that he's learned a lesson or something. But still, I think that the (admittedly forced-feeling conflict) adds to his characterisation. :)
I love this film and even if it is generic, I appreciate them for trying to make it as much of a basic introduction for the characters so the viewers can get on board much easier. That's what makes the sequel so satisfying to watch I think anyways. The first film was spent setting things up and getting us into this world. Now the sequel is able to expand on it and we can still understand what is going on in this world. I can't wait for the 3rd film, it's going to kick ass. But due to the amount it has to fill, I am keeping my expectations to a minimum, but still excited for it nonetheless. This was a great review and I look forward to you covering the other film if you can get around to it.
Honestly the way I feel about this movie is the same feeling I have with the first game where it's good but the sequel is just a million times better.

I still think that the first movie handles the more emotional elements better than the second movie
The first sonic movie holds up a little less well now compared to other video game movies, especially the Super Mario bros movie, but its a good stepping stone, plus it got us a great sequel, which mixed the movie world and elements from the games much more! I will say though I like how rings have been handled in these movies, basically like the large rings in the games with portals and special stages. Incorporating them as essentially single use portals is a neat touch that still fits the existing lore surprisingly well
This film was magical for me. I personally loved it from start to finish. It felt like- I’m not sure how to fully describe it, but- some of it hit home for me. Like the baseball scene where Sonic is playing a game of baseball by himself.
Seeing him be a kid and it reminded me of that Bugs Bunny Looney Tunes episode where Bugs played against a baseball team by himself. Playing a game or anything with an audience is different than when you’re doing it by yourself. I know this as an actress.
He had fun, and was playing with his powers in a way he probably hadn’t in a while. Until… he turned to where the audience would be on the bleachers, and saw no one. That, personally… that hit home. Because I know that feeling… at that time I’d seen it on other people. But years later I knew exactly have Sonic fell at this moment when my best friend ditched me on my first film festival premiere. Alone. I think that’s why I cried a little more on my rewatch years later even if that scene made me cry the first time I saw it. 😭❤
I think comparing the first to the second is so funny when thinking of the general audience. Ok so in this movie we introduced you to Sonic, he's a fast hedgehog. Here is Eggman/Robotnik he's the silly villain. Got it? Good.
Now in the second movie we introduce Knuckles the last of an echidna tribe. He is looking for the master emerald that holds powers beyond comprehension. It is hidden in a secret temple. Also there are seven little emeralds in the master emerald. Anyway this is Tails he's a cute little fox with two tails. Oooh surprise it's super Sonic. Oh! And in the next movie you will meet the project Shadow.
I always interpreted this scene 10:52 as sonic being mad at tom for leaving his home by choice, when sonic was forced from his.

I loved the first Sonic movie, and after seeing what they've planned for 2nd and 3rd one, I appreciate it even more for so many things that this movie had setup. Especially SA2 stuff like the Olive Garden commander ended up founding G.U.N, the 50 years of Wachowski's family protecting the town that Project Shadow was probably hidden there. It's pretty fun to look back.
0:35 If it was an animated movie they would have been able to have more Sonic characters in the movie because the first movie has the same budget as the Super Mario Bros Movie.
The movie is a live action, meaning real props and cgi

15:43 This movie had a pretty low budget but at least the second movie had about $110 Million so the CGI looks a lot better in that movie but other than that I loved the first movie especially since when the first movie came out the only Sonic games I played were Sonic CD and that's it I don't think I even knew who Tails was until somebody spoiled the after-credits scene for me.

@@adencreative7897 what makes it worse is I played frontiers for footage, rewatched the movie, grabbed pics of other variants of sonic, and never realizing his legs are always blue.
Happy 4th Anniversary Sonic the Hedgehog 1 movie.
I will say Sonic 2 is a far better movie and definitely feels more like a Sonic adaption with Tails, Knuckles and the Emeralds being introduced.
I'm so super excited for sonic 3 and mildly interested in the Knuckles series just to see what funny antics he gets up to
For me I personally like the blue arms it just looks more complete to me. ^^
4 years later we got 3 movies and a spin off series and a possible future sonic cinematic universe
The first movie in my opinion was great, giving the fact that it was correcting the mistake of Sonic's first design it had alot to prove. It made me pumped for the sequel because it gave me what i was hoping for in the end. Me and my friends were having a long conversation about the lore of Sonic not just in the games but the comics too and i wanted more. i say the movie is a 8/10 because the people to made this film actually took the criticism and fixed it, most writers in hollywood don't do that at all and just double down thinking that we don't what we're talking about and then blame us for the films unsuccessful opening in the box office. For that alone, I'll gladly take this Movie as a good staple for Sonic Media.

Personal opinion, I like this film being light on Sonic lore because there is a lot of sonic lore to pull from and I think it could've been easy to overwhelm audiences with that. Doing too much too quickly. It's just a small scale adventure to get his rings back and build some basic lore about this version of Sonic and this universe. Sonic 2 imo is where we began to see the lore really get going and because Sonic 1 walked it allowed the second to run and likely going to make the 3rd film even more interesting with Shadow being introduced.
Basically what I'm trying to say is they avoided the problem that some cinematic universes do like Universal's Dark Universe and the DCEU where they go too hard to quickly and it blows up in their face because they've established so much so quickly it's harder to pivot and make corrections.
