Gorilla Mum Loves Slinging Her Baby Girl On Her Back

- Gorilla mother Mayani doesn't take the gentle option when it comes to picking up her daughter Thandie. She always swings her on her back. Thandie doesn't seem to mind. She just enjoys the ride. You might remember Ozala carried Shufai around on her leg.
Don't miss the last video next week Thursday from the Antwerp Gorillas. I saved the best till last. Heartwarming video with Matadi and his baby girl!

The Antwerp Gorilla Troop:
The Silverback Matadi: Born on the 25th of May 2003 at the Twycross Zoo in England to Ozala and Ti. Ozala, as many of you know is still at Twycross Zoo with her family. Ti passed away on the 26th Feb 2007, the cause of it was a stroke.
Mayani ( The Mate of Matadi) was born on the 6th of December in Barcelona. Mayani got moved to the Antwerp Zoo in 2017 I believe.
Their daughter Thandie was born on 26.11.2018
Mambele was born in Hanover Germany on the 21 Feb 1999 and was moved to Antwerp on the 22nd August 2011.
Beautiful Amahoro is I believe an Eastern Lowland Gorilla born in the year 1990. She has a stunning deep black coat without any obvious single grey hair. At 160kg she is a very powerful female. In comparison, Oumbie weighs 190kg!
Sadly Matadi passed away on the 9th of October 2023, leaving his young family behind. Such a gentle giant. RIP Matadi. You won't be forgotten. Antwerp Zoo wrote cause of death was "due to a double respiratory infection (COVID-19 and Bordetella) with additional complications." - Домашні улюбленці та дикі тварини
Thandie is so beautiful, and sweet natured. She just wanders around, interested in everything, and doesn't mind being unceremoniously hoisted up by Mum, and piggybacked to the next pit stop! Great footage, SV. Thank you very much. :)
Thank you so much Brett!
Unlike Shufai that is still riding his mom like they are going into battle.
Haha...Thandie wants to do what SHE wants, but Mom is more than happy to keep her from growing up!! Lol
What a good mom! She is ever watchful over Thandie. Thandie radiates curiosity and intelligence out of her eyes and is loving exploring the world, so Mom has to be ever vigilant.
That's a good way of knowing where Thandie is every minute, just fling her on your back and go about your daily business of foraging! Love this family, and look how fit Mayani legs are, looks like she works out! LOL Thx SV, hope you enjoyed your time at Antwerp!
I certainly did. Hopefully I will get the chance to go back in the future. I think first it might be a Bristol Zoo trip to see the sisters :-)
Oh lordy, she is just divine 😍 didn't think she could get any cuter... I was wrong... Babies aren't as fragile as I thought they were..Love how confident and casual mom is.. Mom is quite young isn't she.. Thank you for sharing...🤩 🇦🇺
LOL, when you have no say so, at all! A grab up, a snatch up and a let's go.....Period! Mama Gorilla: Cry, if you want to and see what happens! Classic!
I love Thandie and Viz!😊
Sometimes I don't know whether to laugh or cry... *: )* Seriously, I ALWAYS wince & almost have to look away when I see one of these little Ape babies being dragged or flung about by one arm...YIKES, it makes me so nervous...I guess we just need to trust that Mama, Papa, older siblings (& other family members ) have an inherent understanding of the fragility of the babies, & wouldn't intentionally or accidentally go too far...Every time I see baby Thandie, I simply loooong to cradle her in my arms & look into her little eyes...
I think more then one year later, we can say that Thandie isn't afraid of anything and maybe Mayani's no nonsense attitude has something to do with it LOL. Nowadays when I see Thandie play a bit rough with her babysister Vizazi I've to look away and it makes me nervous at times ;-) I try to tell myself that everything is normal and gonna be ok. And that mom will protect the little one whenever Thandie goes too far. So I fully understand what you said @poppykok5
Thandie is a strong little girl. Animals baby are tough little things.
Oh my gosh, what a beautiful mama, "be still my heart"..love her & baby. Thks SV for this sweet video :-)
Awwwwwwww! It's good to have a loving and caring mother no matter what the species! Great job mom in looking out for your young one! Great video thanks!
Thank you Dora!
Clearly....I AM Mayani #1 Fan !
So cute!!
She’s a pretty no nonsense mom! 😯
I miss my sweet little Thandie. I'd love to see how she and her baby sister are doing now.
Me too, I would love to see Thandi again and to meet her baby sister for the first time. At the moment I'm waiting of where Lope will be going and if it is Europe, maybe I'm able to connect all those visits together.
Rewatching some of my favourite videos of my favourite troop. And this one still makes me laugh. ❣🦍❣🦍
For babies they never cry much.
Now I know why they call baby carriers a sling!
Het is werkelijk een snoepje❗️Mama vindt het beter om haar dicht bij zich te hebben dus huppekee op de rug❗️Enige video 👌🏼👌🏼🙋♀️
:-)
Ozala’s grand daughter
Thandie can't do anything, lol!
🤗🤗🤗❤️❤️❤️
She's teaching her to cling on, by the looks of it.....
That's me wants to play but my mom dragging me to home 😂
Mom is kinda tough on baby. Slinging baby around like a bag of groceries. Is Thandie her first baby?
I'm concerned how rough Mom is with her baby. I know this is not normal. I know a lot about Gorillas and most moms are loving and gentle with there babies. I know that Gorilla babies a a lot stronger then we think. But it is hard to watch. Is Thandie her first baby.
My heart is melting when see mom pull thandie by one hand and drug her over the rocks 😔
Don't miss the last video next week Thursday from the Antwerp Gorillas??? Are you serious? Why is it going to be the last video? Please tell me what's going on? Is it the last of the Gorilla videos??? I look forward to watching these creatures everyday. They are the highlight of my days. If they are really ending. Please tell me how I can find out how they are doing. I have gotten attached to them. This is blowing my mind. I can't even get attached to zoo animals ,with out them being taken away. I am not taking this well at all.
Hello Carolyn, this was only ever a temporary series of the Antwerp gorillas unfortunately. As you know I'm in the UK and was only there for a limited time and I won't be back there for quite some time. So sorry to disappoint you, but the Twycross zoo gorillas are here to stay and I will always show them.
She’s so tiny.
Mum is very rough with her! Plus she does not talk to the baby before hoisting her up so rough! Is this her first baby?
What do you mean she does not talk to the baby. Since when can gorilla's TALK?😆 Sorry, I had to react on this one...
Maybe she can read her a book or watch a video.😂🤣
Lol🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣put dvd on for her
Don't be so ignorant!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Well why bother with stroller ?I think she wants to keep him a baby.Young must have strong arms to tolerate yanking like that.
Mama needs to be gentle!
