    You're right, The 75/ZT community is awesome! I wondered where you'd been. Pure bad luck that breakdown, couldn't be foreseen.

    My Dad oversaw the manufacture of every gearbox on Rovers since the late 80's at a division called "Powertrain".
    If the failure was due to poor workmanship then blame him 😂😂😂. He also bribed 2 security guards to look the other way as 75 gearboxes unexpectedly vanished. He saw the writing on the wall so he wanted one last drink before they closed. It's been 20 odd years now so I feel comfortable about telling this story.

    Early 75s it was a common fault with weak /breaking springs. Most by now should have been replaced as the new ones should be ok. Tesco car park one foggy night they had the street lamps off and I drove up over and down again the plant kerb dividers in the car park! It knocked the fan blade off and I did not realize it at the time cracked a front spring. In fact I was driving for a while with a broken spring, wondering what the noise was. Luckily it did not puncture the tyre.
    If you want to polish /clean your head lamps just use dot 3 or dot 4 brake fluid with a micro fibre cloth. Make sure it does not get on the paint work, it is a top secret tip that works better than any other method!

      Same here, was quite painful without it. As much as I like my other cars this one is far too much to go without at this point

    Glad it was nothing overly major. For cleaning headlamps, I have had great luck with McGuire's PlastX. I just get the cream not the whole kit. It has kept the 31 year old headlamps on my 1990 Volvo as clear as new. Clean twice a year, and never an issue.

    Tom, I admire you but am envious of you. I had a Rover 75 and by God I wish I'd have kept it. I've saved it to my Dropbox (picture) but have no idea how to load it on Utube.
    Your love of these cars is amazing. Shortly after dumping the old woman a friend of mine went out in my 75, he had a poxy BMW 3 series, he couldn't believe the 75 was so good.

      Itschad1954 I too love my 75. I will never get rid of it until either I or the car expire. They are a superb car

      @@heathermcglade4166 Hi Heather, I've been driving for 44 years now and have had countless cars including Mercs, Audi, VW ,Volvo's and a variety of others including a Simca. The Rover 75 is the only car I've ever had that I have kept a picture of. Wish I could upload it here. Also checked Gov.UK & it has disappeared (CU06 LLG) so may have been written off or sctapped, Such a shame.

    It's a good job you're spring didn't snap whilst you were driving. I dread to think what could of happened if it were to rip into the tyre whilst going down the road. I don't know what it is about Rover 75s and to why there springs frequently snap. I've had my 75 for nearly 10 years now and must of gone through 5 springs..
    It's been around 2 years since I've last had one let go and I'm expecting one to go anytime soon given its track record. Thankfully I do have the spring/tyre protectors fitted so fingers crossed I won't end up in the same unfortunate position you did.
    All said though I'm glad you're OK and you're car is still fighting fit 👍👍

      Hi Tom,
      Where did you get the Auto gear box oil changed. From what I gather its quite an in depth job to do.
      I intrusted mine to a guy in North Wales who only specialises in Rover 75/Zt. His name is Jules and couldn't recommend him enough if you ever get in a pickle with you car 👍

    I think maybe your car just realised that the underside needed covering with oil to protect itself from rust. If you look at the economics of repairing an old car it definitely makes sense compared to the usual monthly payments for cars that are made by people these days. I think it's better to think of of yearly cost of running a car when paying for repairs rather than the value of the car that is being repaired.

    • @tomdrives
      @tomdrives  3 роки тому +2

      That’s my logic too, I’d say I pay less then let’s say a leased Corsa to run this car per year. Equipment wise plus the other benefits, it’s a no brainer

      @@tomdrives lol my cousin bought a Fiesta Titanium X for £10,000 at the same time that I bought my Rover 75 and it has cost him significantly more money in repairs and servicing than it has for me. Unlucky on his part but proves your point nicely 😅

    • @iamthefatstig
      @iamthefatstig 3 роки тому +1

      Depending on how many miles you need to cover per year, Bangernomics can work considerably in your favour if you're not of the "Keep up with the Jones's" type. I bought, and insured my 75 diesel for less than my sister pays monthly on her lease.
