Looks like powders, CA glue, accelerator and careful sanding.
I love these videos and being able to see different steps and craftsmanship that go into what you do! Out of curiosity is that CA glue that you used to hold the filler in the dice vaults or is it some other kind of bonding agent?

Which form of elvish have you used? I’d love to know so I can decode it. It seems to be some form of Sindarin, but I’m not sure.
What kind of magnets are those, are they like screw magnets or something?
Can you please tell me what kind of CA glue you use? I have been learning how to do inlay like this, and the thin Ca glue i use just beads up in the copper powder, and then, I often have pits and holes in the finished inlay, where the CA didn't soak in correctly.

Tried & True. Beeswax and linseed oil.

Love these ‘making of’ videos. Although it has been driving me crazy trying to figure out what the name of the tool that cuts the hole for the Dice Vaults, like at the beginning of the video. I think it is a type of milling machine but all I get are Stupid CNC machines in my searches. Doug / Bobby help!

I am genuinely curious about putting a finish on the box prior to the engraving and then sanding and adding another round of finish. were they different boxes?

Imho it prevents the product they put on after to damage the wood and therefore needing to remove (sand) a whole lot of material rather than the coat of finish they previously added.

We don't use the oil prior to the fills. The polyurethane only goes on the inside. :)

By hand *immediately uses a power tool*
By hand means its made by a human and not a computer and machines. Does not mean a human cannot use a power tool. If that was all hand made as you think it, that box would be hundreds of dollars because of the hours to make it.
@@zedzknight when you say computer and machines, do you mean something like laser engraver?
@@suncu91, yes I do mean a Laser CNC. If you are referring to the laser etching to get the elvish writing that is understandably computer done. The box is still majority made by hand and not by a computer. The production costs associated with possibly plunge routering each set of words, or possibly hand carving with a knife and chisle would make those boxs astronomical in production costs.
My comment is to specify that a powered machine operated with human hands is still made by hand.
@@zedzknight If things count as hand made, even when computer controlled manufacturing aides are used, because "otherwise production costs would be astronomical" you could argue cars being hand made. Or just about anything else. The boxes look really nice, the manufacturing process is somewhat on the gray area of "hand made", but would still make the cut for me. Describing it as "crafting by hand", for me, puts this in the "no, not really" category. But these are terms that aren't well defined (and even less so in general use), so I can see your side as well. But the argument of "things still count as hand made if CnC is used to keep down the cost" isn't very strong, especially as here it's used for the defining characteristic of the product.
@@BoredLyron Well cars are heavily Machine made and assembled by hand in some cases. This is not the case with this style of hand made goods. To really overemphasize the idea "no machine assistance" all hand tool idea. Every box would need to be hand cut with a Back Saw or Rip-Cut Saw, Instead of a Table or Miter Saw. Then you would have to go about boring a hole inside that chunk of wood, which will require a handspun Drill and a Chisel which will take HOURS of Work, rather than just a router and possibly 3 minutes. Then you gotta sit there Hand Carving the letters, then filling and sanding by hand rather than a belt or orbital sander. The difference in production times goes from maybe a couple of Boxes every day, to a box every 3 days or more (if it was only one Craftsman). A powered tool is not the same thing as an Automated-Computer-Driven tool. This product without the Lazer carving is a Hand made, as Human Hands where the direct driving force of every one of those tools to produce the product. Whereas in a car manufacturing plant the whole frame can be welded with a human coming in contact with it.

My onlt question is this: why didn't you do the laser engraving for the elvish script before sanding down the wood and oiling it? It almost seems like you're doing the same job twice when you do the exact same thing later on after filling in the engravings.
Probably to ensure a even level surface to work with. The oiling will also help prevent the powder from getting into the grain as it actually can cause the wood fibers to swell closing any micro gaps in the grain of the wood. The laser etched areas will actually absorb some of the ca glue ensuring a good bond with the wood in the etched area. At least as an amature wood worker that would be my guess why they are using that particular order of operations.

What kind of finish are you guys using?
We use a polyurethane sealer on the inside and a beeswax Linseed oil mixture on the outside. :)

Inlay using metal powders, and CA glue.
What's the machine being used at the beginning?
I Think it's just a router set on it's side with a bar to guide lateral movement and another to allow for depth. This let's the shavings fall out instead of having to blow them out or move the piece between depths.
sadly i bet you'd think a dwarvish vault set would be made of metal...

You probably know this already but just in case it slipped your mind if you want to use them in the same way they do you’ll need a couple sets with opposite poles.👍🏻

So it does indeed look like the eBay seller I purchased from fucked me - I only received one polarity lol. So back to problem solving - I think to make use of these, I'll have to affix the magnet to one side, and use a finishing washer as the other receiving side. Won't be the strongest bond but it's more for holding cabinet door gently closed than to seal a case like this.
I would love to get one but due to the death of my husband, it just isn't possible at the moment.

I love the woodwork and all, but true D&D nerds need to have a dice cup that is part of a belt & holster for the dice, so that (s)he may “quick draw” the dice and roll at a moments notice.... seriously, a leather dice cup held in place with a couple snaps but quickly removable for the roll would be the way of a true nerd.....

So, you made some (albeit beautiful) boxes by hand and then laser engraved them. That’s a far cry from making “elvish dice boxes by hand.”

Looks like a lot of machinery was used in the process... I thought "hand-made" meant using hand-tools only? Time to break out the hand plane, chisel, and hammer...
You thought incorrectly.
"Hand made" just means a person held the product and operated the machinery by hand instead of programming a robot to do it automatically.
No sound sucks. And this is no hobby. I love the shop you " WORK" in. We could All make great things if we were getting paid for it. And love all the power tools to make it by hand.... Do you know what click bait is?
Nobody said it was a hobby video, it's Wyrmwood... As has been said numerous times here, hand-crafted doesn't refer to not using power tools. It isn't crafted by robotics and machinery, it's crafted by a guy using power tools.
In addition to what Chris said, We also do our sanding entirely by hand save for a small amount of belt sanding. (Which is still considered by hand) :)
