  • Kyler is a Suri alpaca who came to our farm at 8.5 months old to be Milano's buddy. He has no prior training or handling, so this is how I start an older alpaca that I didn't raise. He's been with us for about 2 weeks when we started training. This will be a fun challenge :)

@@wozanifarm4597 Hi Elizabeth! I personally start with a catch rope because that can go around their neck at the base and is easier to work with if they've never had a halter on. Catch rope is less fuss and they know they are connected to me once that is on. Some take a while to get this on and be able to stay calm. From there, I touch their neck and practice touching their ears. I do this as prep for putting on the halter as most alpacas that have not been handled do not want to be touched near the head or ears. If they have been halter trained and don't mind the halter, I'd start there. Halters are usually scary for alpacas who have never been handled as it goes over their nose and you touch their head and ears. Alpacas will panic if the halter is low on their nose as they won't be able to breathe properly. The halter nose piece goes way up by their eyes. It will look almost too high. Hope this helps! Have a great evening :)

Good luck and have fun! hahahah, yes, spit is no fun...but they usually don't spit at you. They usually only spit at each other and you might get caught in between two spitting alpacas! Good thing is it will just wash right off :) It does take a lot of patience depending on their previous experience- but once they trust you, it's really amazing. Have a beautiful day!

Alpacas generally do not spit much. Llamas yes. But alpacas generally don’t spit. They’ll flail and kick and scratch. But even biting, they don’t do much. Fighting teeth need to be filed down or that’s when damage really comes in

Can you please tell me where to purchase a catch rope?

Hi Debbie, you can get one from Camelidynamics- Marty Mcgee makes them. Or you can just make your own :) I bought some rope and made one. I like Marty's and have one of hers but it is too long for my purposes. www.camelidynamics.com/product/halter-training-ropecatch-rope/

@@WisteriaSuriRanch Can you tell me how to make one? (I am very new to alpaca ownership and know nothing about ropes, rings, sizes, etc.) The shipping for that is unreal! 😳

@@debbiedegayner3312 The one Marty sells you can slide the ring- and tighten the loop around their neck but this isn't necessary for the way I train and I can't recall how I made one like that. I think the one I use in the video is not the adjustable kind. The easiest way and this will totally suffice- you can just buy a longer dog leash which already has a latch. The thicker rounder leash is easier to work with, but really- anything will do. Just make sure it's relatively sturdy. Then buy a metal ring that is big, maybe an inch or two. I think I got this at the hardware store. It doesn't really matter as long as it is big enough and easy enough to catch the ring with your latch. Then attach the metal ring to the leash maybe about 3 feet from the latch. Depending on the thickness of the leash, you might be able to just tie the ring right to it. You can get creative here but if you want quick and easy, get a few thick zip ties and just zip tie the metal ring onto the leash. You get the idea :) Hope this helps- let me know if this makes sense.
