BLACKPINK is signed to one of the 3 biggest labels in South Korea: YG Entertainment, so things are a little bit better for them salary-wise. They usually live together in dorms but they DO make money, most of it goes to the agency (in this case YG) but if the group is really successful, they also get their fair share of money. The moment you know that a Kpop star is REALLY rich, is when they move out of the agency dormitory and buy their own house. They usually buy houses or apartments that cost millions and millions, they get luxury cars and they start flexing like crazy.

Okay so this is going to be a long one but since you asked Zach, here you go: Kpop is very systematic in that, like BlackPink, if you are signed to one of the Big 3 labels in Korea (SM, YG, JYP) the company invests millions into the kids (trainees) and train them in all aspects of entertainment (singing, dancing, acting, even being funny for television shows). What’s not true, at least in the case of the major companies, is that these kids are being abused and forced to stay there. Trainees usually will train as long as they can up until the company debuts a new girl or boy group. If you don’t make the cut, usually they give up on their dream and move on, or simply join another company. One of the methods the Kpop industry has come up with allowing the trainees to really generate a bond as if they were a family (beyond training together for years 😂) is to live in a “dorm” together. But it’s not really a “dorm” more like a big ass house/apartment (or multiple, if you have a huge group) that they all live in. But when you get as big as BlackPink or BTS they usually just go off and buy their own mansions to live in 😂😂. But the main thing is that, the “Kpop machine” is NOT always abusive (although it can be bc there’s always gonna be people taking advantage of these kids and their talents, even if the group becomes hella successful) but simply pushes kids who they know have talent and potential to access as much of it that they can. In the end the group’s success is the company’s success, so of course they’d want the best for them. BUT, these things I’ve just outlined is not the case for all groups bc like I said there have been instances where companies will manipulate, abuse, and take advantage of their groups. Whether that be by not paying them (B.A.P.), actually physically abusing them (The East Light) or having them sign “slave contracts” in which the members aren’t allowed to date (publicly or otherwise) for X amount of years. Luckily and unfortunately, however, this is not the case for most big name Kpop groups (especially those under the Big 3).
The problem is that the kpop industry IS VERY ABUSIVE. It's well known that idols are forced into prostitution and that trainers beat trainees, this happens even in the big three. And what you said about money only counts for the big companies you're forgetting that there are way more small companies than there are big. Kpop artists don't make any money, blackpink does because they have millions of fans around the world but even then the girls don't make that much money when you think of how much revenue they bring in and that is because kpop companies take 70% of all their earnings and the groups then have to split 30% between each other, that isn't a lot if you are a normal non-big3 kpop group.
I thought back in 2014 SM had plenty of people to come forward screaming "slave contracts". I THINK it's been outlawed by now because of so many artists talking about it, but one of the Big 3 was DEFINITELY part of it

Western artists (mostly american) have either the same or way bigger budgets than koreans, it's just that S.korea has much better technology and better editing programs, cameras, etc. It is one of the leading countries in electronics and was ranked the second most innovative country in the world, they are the worlds number one producer in mobile phones, displays, semiconductors, etc.
Rai western artist have more people to pay as apart of their budget. Producers, directors, hair and makeup artist, stylist etc where as K-pop artist they already have teams hired who already earn there pay and the money is better used for production as well as music show promotions.

Obviously there is a culture, and average kpop artists are taken advantage of but these girls have so many seperate contracts and brand deals. They all have their own apartments. Jennie's place was revealed to be around 5-6 million dollars, so they definitely make money. I think what you are talking about, and what's in the news often are the trainees, before they debut as artists. Those people basically make no money and live together with like 10 others.
So first they had to audition in order to like be part of thr company. Then they are training for years to get debuted. They teach them to sing, dance, and if their like from a different country they teach them Korean. They all stay in dorms together. Some of companies treat them bad but not all they time.

Regarding your questions of the life of a K-Pop idol... yeah it is quite different than the life of a western celebrity but it depends on the company and it also got alot better in recent years. You usually sign your first contract with a company at a rather young age (Jennie from Blackpink for example was 14 years) and move into the company dormotary with other trainees and senior idols. The next years you get trained and schooled in all kinds of disciplines like dancing, singing or acting while you hope you will get a chance to debut as part of a group one day. The blackpink members for example trained 4-5 years before they had their debut in 2016, which got delayed multiple times before that. The four girls live together in their dorm since their trainee days. The company invests large sums of money into the training of an idol all these multiple years and provides most of the living costs during the time of the contact. After debut, all earnings go to the company, and they use it to first get their investment back. After that it is a fixed split between company and idol, depending on the contract. During their contract idols usually have to follow a strict ruleset (no alcohol, no drugs, no nightclubs, no dating, no driving ...) and aren't allowed to leave the dorm without manager and/or security. All to avoid scandals and protect the brand (and the investment of the company). It gets alot better when you can negotiate a new contract after your first one is over and you where successful. Even if you not sign a second contract with your company, you can still utilize your stardom and your fans to venture into new careers like acting, going solo artist, founding your own company or whatever.
Blackpink been living with each other their whole career. The reason why they don’t get paid much is because the companies in Korea use the money to build new groups and put a lot of budget in the music videos. If a kpop group don’t get enough views or ratings they get paid less than an average person in a part time job. That’s why some people leave their groups.Since Blackpink is successful they get more allowance than other groups and live in a better environment. It’s their dream to be idols so I guess performing and making enough money as they can is enough for them and other groups in the k-pop industry. 😩👌😭❤️

From what I've learned in the past year of listening to Kpop, it's takes a lot. You're basically choosing furthering your schooling/getting a steady job vs becoming a trainee. You're signing a contract with a label and following the rules. Some of the rules include: no social media, no dating, watching your weight etc...because if you can't follow those simple rules then can you last in the industry? A lot of people sadly quit the process because it's too much for them. Some people have put their experience online about being a Kpop trainee and their experience. There is a lot that I'm still learning to this day but becoming an idol is a journey and a commitment. I love Blackpink and I'm proud that they will be the first Kpop group at Coachella this year!!!

well it can vary, but when they debut they actually have to pay back the company for their years as trainees so they (usually) don't get any money or just a little until they pay them back, it can take like 2, 3, 4 years but it changes from company to company, some idols even after they pay they get almost nothing in the end, because the company get 95% of the profit and the rest is split between members, so like when a group has 12 membesr thats rough, but i think with blackpink is a bit different, they do a lot of comercials and campaigns, they are huge and they probably have already paid YG back , and they are only 4 members so they probably have their millions $$ already you know, but many kpop idols are not that lucky :(
For all i know, in South Korea commonly the artist agency are the one building/making the groups. They auditioned or scouted thousands of kids and gets them into years or singing,dancing,acting and whatever training, again, for years. Most of them, only the selected few got to debut/release an album. The agency are the one to decide what kind of music they'll sing, gave them the song, make them album, and the choreography and the music videos and the wardrobe, everything. For the distribution of their album sales/concert ticket/goodies/commercial money, well first they cut it for their songs/composer, dorm/housing, album production, music video budget, managers and stylist fee, food and wardrobe fee etc. Then they will divide the profits between the agency and the artist. For the number it varies from one agency to another. And after they divided the profit with their label, the artist have to split the money within the groups. And most of groups live together in 1 dorm/house (or 2 if you have a lot of members) usually so its easy for them to attend training/recording/practices/events/concerts etc and to builds their teamwork also. The more you make money, the better your housing, and food and music video and wardrobe and all, but if you don't make money, well *i dont wanna say anything* But! Not all groups did that, some group actually write and produce their own song, making their own choreography choose fheir wardrobe and such. Some artist agency/labels are very greedy on their shares with the artist but some are actually quite nice and give more to their artist like bighit entertaiment for example. I've been a kpop fan for almost a decade so back then k-pop are very manufactured and inhumane sometimes as the agency controls everything including the artist daily lives (dating ban, dieting etc) but I think its getting slightly better nowadays, well some rules might not change but at least nowadays a lot of k-pop star are making their own music. One thing about korean culture, artists are expected to have a good behaviour and set an example, because most of this girlgroups/boygroups are young and adored by youngsters. So no swearing, drugs, littering, insult or throwing shades to each other etc, they have to be polite especially to the elder and celebrity seniors because South Korea is patriarchy as hell, seniority is hella important to them. I agree with you about the kpop artists not making enough money compared to all the hard work they put into their careers. The companies put so much money into the aesthetics but this money could be put in the artists wallet. Groups like BlackPink, EXO and BTS probably won't have anything to worry about financially because they come from bigger companies or in BTS case, they've become global superstars but others are not always so lucky. I always hear stories about groups retiring broke even when they had hit songs.

Western artists (mostly american) have either the same or way bigger budgets than koreans, it's just that S.korea has much better technology and better editing programs, cameras, etc. It is one of the leading countries in electronics and was ranked the second most innovative country in the world, they are the worlds number one producer in mobile phones, displays, semiconductors, etc.
Rai western artist have more people to pay as apart of their budget. Producers, directors, hair and makeup artist, stylist etc where as K-pop artist they already have teams hired who already earn there pay and the money is better used for production as well as music show promotions.
@@Hyxnjxn Um no. They have set stylist and makeup artists but the people who create their music videos aren't apart of their team, though they might work for the same company. Most kpop videos are created by creative production teams such as lupins, Frogs and Tiger. These teams create high quality music videos for a lot less money than American directors and co.

Zack!!! Majority of the kpop artists out now were raised & trained at a very young age into these artists. It’s said to be like a “bootcamp”. Especially the ones in groups. Thats why each kpop artist or groups we see are FUCKING SICKENING 🔥
To talk about the ending of the video, these girls earn MONEY. Obviously there is a culture, and average kpop artists are taken advantage of but these girls have so many seperate contracts and brand deals. They all have their own apartments. Jennie's place was revealed to be around 5-6 million dollars, so they definitely make money.
I think what you are talking about, and what's in the news often are the trainees, before they debut as artists. Those people basically make no money and live together with like 10 others.

So first they had to audition in order to like be part of thr company. Then they are training for years to get debuted. They teach them to sing, dance, and if their like from a different country they teach them Korean. They all stay in dorms together. Some of companies treat them bad but not all they time.
That intro was something else :) Amazing! Regarding your questions of the life of a K-Pop idol... yeah it is quite different than the life of a western celebrity but it depends on the company and it also got alot better in recent years. You usually sign your first contract with a company at a rather young age (Jennie from Blackpink for example was 14 years) and move into the company dormotary with other trainees and senior idols. The next years you get trained and schooled in all kinds of disciplines like dancing, singing or acting while you hope you will get a chance to debut as part of a group one day. The blackpink members for example trained 4-5 years before they had their debut in 2016, which got delayed multiple times before that. The four girls live together in their dorm since their trainee days. The company invests large sums of money into the training of an idol all these multiple years and provides most of the living costs during the time of the contact. After debut, all earnings go to the company, and they use it to first get their investment back. After that it is a fixed split between company and idol, depending on the contract. During their contract idols usually have to follow a strict ruleset (no alcohol, no drugs, no nightclubs, no dating, no driving ...) and aren't allowed to leave the dorm without manager and/or security. All to avoid scandals and protect the brand (and the investment of the company). It gets alot better when you can negotiate a new contract after your first one is over and you where successful. Even if you not sign a second contract with your company, you can still utilize your stardom and your fans to venture into new careers like acting, going solo artist, founding your own company or whatever.

Blackpink been living with each other their whole career. The reason why they don’t get paid much is because the companies in Korea use the money to build new groups and put a lot of budget in the music videos.
If a kpop group don’t get enough views or ratings they get paid less than an average person in a part time job. That’s why some people leave their groups.Since Blackpink is successful they get more allowance than other groups and live in a better environment. It’s their dream to be idols so I guess performing and making enough money as they can is enough for them and other groups in the k-pop industry. 😩👌😭❤️

I love you stayed real about the Korean artist treatment, which I’m not Korean to even speak on it but from what I’ve seen it seems real. Where in America if an artist doesn’t feel well or strains their voice a bit a whole concert or few will be canceled but I’ve seen videos where many Korean artists will faint multiple times because of how they over work them. And it seems that way for many popular groups as well like Exo, bts and black pink. Even if they have so much fame the company’s only see them as moneymakers

From what I've learned in the past year of listening to Kpop, it's takes a lot. You're basically choosing furthering your schooling/getting a steady job vs becoming a trainee. You're signing a contract with a label and following the rules. Some of the rules include: no social media, no dating, watching your weight etc...because if you can't follow those simple rules then can you last in the industry? A lot of people sadly quit the process because it's too much for them. Some people have put their experience online about being a Kpop trainee and their experience. There is a lot that I'm still learning to this day but becoming an idol is a journey and a commitment.
I love Blackpink and I'm proud that they will be the first Kpop group at Coachella this year!!!

I love seeing people realize that most kpop music videos have such intricate concepts and big budgets. Also you should react to Loona - "Butterfly"
well it can vary, but when they debut they actually have to pay back the company for their years as trainees so they (usually) don't get any money or just a little until they pay them back, it can take like 2, 3, 4 years but it changes from company to company, some idols even after they pay they get almost nothing in the end, because the company get 95% of the profit and the rest is split between members, so like when a group has 12 membesr thats rough, but i think with blackpink is a bit different, they do a lot of comercials and campaigns, they are huge and they probably have already paid YG back , and they are only 4 members so they probably have their millions $$ already you know, but many kpop idols are not that lucky :(
For all i know, in South Korea commonly the artist agency are the one building/making the groups. They auditioned or scouted thousands of kids and gets them into years or singing,dancing,acting and whatever training, again, for years. Most of them, only the selected few got to debut/release an album. The agency are the one to decide what kind of music they'll sing, gave them the song, make them album, and the choreography and the music videos and the wardrobe, everything. For the distribution of their album sales/concert ticket/goodies/commercial money, well first they cut it for their songs/composer, dorm/housing, album production, music video budget, managers and stylist fee, food and wardrobe fee etc. Then they will divide the profits between the agency and the artist. For the number it varies from one agency to another. And after they divided the profit with their label, the artist have to split the money within the groups. And most of groups live together in 1 dorm/house (or 2 if you have a lot of members) usually so its easy for them to attend training/recording/practices/events/concerts etc and to builds their teamwork also. The more you make money, the better your housing, and food and music video and wardrobe and all, but if you don't make money, well *i dont wanna say anything* But! Not all groups did that, some group actually write and produce their own song, making their own choreography choose fheir wardrobe and such. Some artist agency/labels are very greedy on their shares with the artist but some are actually quite nice and give more to their artist like bighit entertaiment for example. I've been a kpop fan for almost a decade so back then k-pop are very manufactured and inhumane sometimes as the agency controls everything including the artist daily lives (dating ban, dieting etc) but I think its getting slightly better nowadays, well some rules might not change but at least nowadays a lot of k-pop star are making their own music. One thing about korean culture, artists are expected to have a good behaviour and set an example, because most of this girlgroups/boygroups are young and adored by youngsters. So no swearing, drugs, littering, insult or throwing shades to each other etc, they have to be polite especially to the elder and celebrity seniors because South Korea is patriarchy as hell, seniority is hella important to them. I agree with you about the kpop artists not making enough money compared to all the hard work they put into their careers. The companies put so much money into the aesthetics but this money could be put in the artists wallet. Groups like BlackPink, EXO and BTS probably won't have anything to worry about financially because they come from bigger companies or in BTS case, they've become global superstars but others are not always so lucky. I always hear stories about groups retiring broke even when they had hit songs.
