What a legend of the UA-cam videography community. Your videos have helped educate and inspire so many, so much so that I’ll occasionally go back and watch random reviews of ancient products just to get that PB hit in between current video releases!
Even now, in 2023, I'm still sometimes considering getting a Sony EX3! As I reckon four of these on the cheap could be a nice setup for live broadcast coverage of sports cameras, together with a cheap Blackmagic ATEM Mini. It's never been more affordable to do quality sports streaming!
Magic to see this video again :) This pushed me to buy my first proper camera :) The EX3 is still 14 years later kind of ok for multicam productions :)
I remember watching this and getting all excited. After owning an EX1 this seemed like the logical step forward. That was until Canon introduced the 5Dll. Today, for those of us that own a Sony FS7, the EX3 looks rather dated, but you made some beautiful films with that camera that even today greatly Inspire. Question; is it just me or has a lot of excitement from those days diminished? Today we have the most outstanding cameras, and they're actually affordable. Don't get me wrong, I feel privileged owing quality kit such as the FS7 or C300 and now Drones - must admit a buzz factor did appear when I bought a pp3 and then the pp4 ... but even that amazing technology seems to be having a desensitising, nulling affect ... do we have it to good now to appreciate just how far we've come?
thank you for the review, i nearly bought 3 nx1 cameras this week. i am putting a little extra money into 2 of these, and a few accessories. thanks again.
Hi Philip - Thanks for the great review. Very useful. I have a few questions - 1/ Have you got one yet? 2/ Do you know if this the same camera that Gareth Edwards used for his cheap budget film 'Monsters'? 3/ I understand he used a Letus 35mm lens adapter. Is that the most economical adapter?
hey phill,i almost watch all ur vids, really helpfull for me.i own sone ex3 and i wanna buy a 35mm adaptor..letus extreme is the one i want but i also heard about nanoflash so much.wich do u recommend?nanoflash or letus extreme...unfortunately i can afford one of them...thanks alot. jason
Can I put 1/2" SONY SD lens on this camera? For example, I have several lenses from my DVCAM DSR-300 camera package. Will these lenses fit the EX3 without a conversion mount?
That's a great video; as soon as you watch it you log in to your bank account online to see what's left! The question is if it worths buying one of these cameras (EX-3) when you already own a EX-1?
I had a chance to see the Canon and EX1 side by side at a local film show on the large theater (EX1 is the fixed lens version of EX3 for $3K less) and I was sold on the EX1. Granted, the DP was a big impact ... but everyone loved the Sony film. I bought the Sony and love it for low light.
I'll be shooting my first film in 2 months. What's a good entry level camera to shot hi action scenes like sports (soccer) in? This camera looks great. I have two FX7 HD (Sony) they shoot beautiful live shows but now I'm doing film. For 10grand this camera maybe the ticket.
If you want to buy the Red one with cheap lenses then you will get an image that looks soft, soft, soft, it does not compare to cameras like the f23 unless you spend about 100k on prime lenses. A cheap Red package is only going to be marginally better than an ex3 with descent primes id rather save 15k and buy 2 ex3s with nice primes and not have everything look soft but thats just me bursting the hype bubble.
2024 and I just found this video while searching what camera was used to film the 2010 movie Monsters. I'm subscribed to the channel, but not long enough to have watched this video on the release date haha
Honestly, I find the EX-1 easier to shoot handheld on without a rig. The EX-3 gets really front heavy and has nothing to counterweight it in the back, plus it's a heavier camera.
Hello, does this camera take standard SD cards? If not, how would I transfer footage from the sxs cards onto a mac computer? Any help would be appreciated. I'm thinking about buying this camera used. Thanks!
my problem: i can't really HOLD this camera - same as pmw-ex1. i'd need three hands. to film with the shoulder filming is totally different...does anyone know this problem?
A) Rent Great Glass B) Red has a Nikon mount which you can put cheap, sharp glass on it C) The RED is 4K, it has a 4k sensor, it records 4k RAW and is converted to 4K RGB. Just because it doesn't 4096 lined of red green and blue, doesn't mean it's not 4k. It has the 4096 lines in horizontal resolution anyway.
Damn im in a market for a shoulder market ENG. Its 2020 and why isn't there a 4k update to this camera? I want a ENG video camera but dont want to do the interchangeable lens thing. Thats why i own a Sony A7iii. The Z280 just isn't the same. I would love a EX3 update with the removable FS7/FX9 handle to extend it on a the shoulders.
this is not expensive! when i started out a camera of equivalent quality would have set you back over £60k. This is a price breakthrough, 1/2inch full hd solid state etc...
Nice one.... This is Sahil Ramrakhia.. from India... we are planing to shoot an experimental movie... on EX3.. Without any lens.. can u suggest me a lans to hire... We are going to make the Bollywood's Lowest Budget Movie.. thats why we are shooting on EX3... Pls help me out... thnx
Friend of mine bought a Canon 550D from China, it's known as the Canon 'Kiss' over there. Works perfect for him and it was about 3-4 hundred euro cheaper.
Anybody using one of these in an Avid workflow? I have a shoot coming up & being steered toward EX-3; Avid seems to endorse it but would like to hear from an Avid editor.
I took one out in israel for a week to shoot a music video and in Galilee, Bet you cant tell the join between this and my 1080i handycam on "dancing on the water on tel aviv" Video summary The view finder & lenses is good SIS card is great for apple mac use Heavy to use the MP4 format on F Cut HD express Good feel Minus points Not robust from where I borrowed, 2 of there Ex3's were out of action with broken insides, liked to try different lense's as well!! 8/10 would have one
Even though this is a ridiculously great camera, there's no way I could invest in it over the EX1, simply because it doubles the price. Not to mention that the EX3 is a camera that I could not use to its fullest with my finances; features like the interchangeable lens is not something that I would benefit from, simply because I couldn't afford good lenses. I do however love the viewfinder/LCD screen feature, the new shape and the new controls (eg.framerate button = a HUGE bonus)..
Also RED is not actually a 4 k it is 2.5 k it does not have the color information e.t.c that the f23 has. But no one will know that because how many people have access to 4 k displays! Not saying the Red is a bad camera but you are getting what you pay for a hyped up prototype that still has lots of compatibility problems. ex3, a nice letus extreme d.of and prime lens gets you arguably as good quality as a Red with cheap lens at half the price plus no kinks to iron out.
sony didn't fixe the rolling shutter issue of EX1 and here comes EX3,why sony keep using CMOS chips? go google 'rolling shutter issue of CMOS' for yourself and you'll see,RED ONE got the same problem i believe so do SCARLET,because they use CMOS too, can't believe this!
i dont know man, im selling my XL2, but the EX3 footage doesnt really impress me... i think i'll go for the Canon XLH1 I simply dont care about the buttons and light on the EX3, it's the quality of the image that has to be good.. And the EX3 footage ive seen sucks compared to the XLH1 footage
What happend? I used to die for this kind of things, my biggest dream in my entire life was to be a professional cameraman. Now I dont even think about it.. amazing how much ppl can change with time.. :/
Yeah no kidding man! CMOS for still camera.. SURE! low power consumption! and fast! but I can't understand why they keep putting that crap on camcorders!
@msteelman you could always try gettng a job and save up for one ...HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAAHA ive just bought 2 for my film company and they are excellent camera ...ahahahahhahahahahahahaha...and phil bloom is a good mate bloomo to his close mates ...

11 years later reality TV still uses these cameras. Thanks for expediting my research, Phillip!
ahhhh, the very first Phillip Bloom video I have ever seen, I always come back to it so I can remember the times when I was just getting into film.

My school has 4 of these cameras for its Digital Media and Movie Making class. Watching this video to get acquainted with it!
I would really appreciate if you could tell me, How do I check total hours that a camera has been recorded or used, on Sony EX3.
Thank you
Just got this camera from Creative video. Tank you Philipbloom for these good video you make :)
I got to use this camera on a Jib with a Mechanical head at work the other day, so much fun. Great Camera.

why do people call camcorders like the EX1 or the XF300 hand-held if they are heavy to use hand-held?
I was told this is great prosumer camera to start with until i have enough money to afford the RED ONE, is it true?
@msteelman If you get the projects to support the cost, it's not expensive.
Sweet tripod.
How much does it cost
tell me where is can get a good quality high speed camera for $7000. a Phantom flex is well over $25,000 used bare bones.

hey Sahil, how did the shoot go? did you pull off Bollywood's lowest budget film?
How professional does this camera film?

@willzer808 "is it dodgy to buy from China?" Is that a real question, haha. My vote would be yes on most things, and thats from my experiences.

Not all about the k. A high end HD cam can easily trump a cell phone with 4K.
