Just ran across this video, I'm in tears, my dad was a radio operator on this very airplane during his time in the Navy. Flew trips from Korea to Hawaii and to states. WOW what a piece of history, I'm so glad I found this video to share with my grown kids and their children....Thank You so much!!!

That is so cool your father worked on this exact aircraft. It is the most impressive aircraft I have ever seen in person. One impressive piece of aviation history. Thanks for watching, I hope your family enjoyed seeing the video as well.

Your Father crewed with my Father on the same plane. My Dad was the senior flight engineer on the "Mars Hawaii" this same plane. In fact, at 18 months old I flew from NAS Honolulu to NAS Alameda.

Watched a Martin Mars fight a fire just south of Sechelt in the late 90 s ..we were anchored on the south end of Lasqueti . Saw the complete cycle several times ..this is great video it captures some of the real majesty of this fabulous aircraft . Also how freaking loud it is ..

Great video and love the comments. I worked for the company that installed the fueling buoy etc at the base on sproat lake. Also when there was a fire at Sooke potholes park this plane flew right over my house to scoop water from Otter Point ....amazing. I told my buddy about what he missed, he said ..I was out there salmon fishing, had to get the hell out of the way 😮... Fire out in about 6 drops. Great day!

Had to have been 2, since there's only been 2 since 1962.
The Marianas Mars crashed near Northwest Bay, British Columbia, on 23 June 1961 during firefighting operations; all four crew members were lost. Just over a year later, on 12 October 1962 while parked onshore at the Victoria airport, the Caroline Mars was damaged beyond repair by Typhoon Freda when she was blown 200 metres/yards, breaking her back.

My wife and I had the privilege of exploring this plane on Sproat Lake on Vancouver Island back in about 1998. It was the off season and the plane was being serviced. Several engines were on test stands. We met a nice pilot/mechanic named Brent and he took us aboard, where we poked around on the flight deck (too big to call it a cockpit), clambered over the water tank (6,000 gallons I believe) and opened a hatch on the very top to climb up on the wing. An immense aircraft. I'm sure that if I hadn't had my beautiful wife with me Brent might have told me to get lost, so it was our lucky day. I must dig around and find the photos I took.

I love how the engine nacelles and cylinder areas are painted red; nice personal touch to the aircraft and adds a certain blend of uniformity.🙂 We tend to forget Martin built a whole lot of airplanes. I was watching some docu. footage on Aviation history and interviewed were Glenn Martin(died 1955), William Boeing(died 1956), Allan Lockheed(died 1969), Jerome Hunsaker and others. Great footage of aircraft company founders.

Seen them many times, grew up on Vancouver island since the 60s , Cowichan valley , this is awesome but to see it in real life is mind boggling , they are so big, loud, and slow but so agile and graceful as they fight forest fires you'd have to see it for real.

Quite possibly the BEST video on UA-cam! Should be compulsory viewing for everyone.
The Canadian Government should step in to preserve this magnificent aeroplane for future posterity - or they should make a special appeal to Paul Allen (Flying Heritage Collection in Seattle).

    • @flyingbeaver57
      @flyingbeaver57 5 років тому +1

Agreed. When I was a kid, and we travel to Vancouver Island to go camping, we always went up to Sproat Lake to the the (then 3) Martin Mars aircraft. Ulesss we have a change of government in the October federal election, there's no way the Canadian Government would become involved. It's disgusting.
If you're an aviation fan you probably know about the Plane Savers project that took place from Dec 30 2018 - June 6 2019. A derelict, stripped DC-3C sitting in a corner of the St. Hubert airport near Montreal, originally an RAF Dakota in 271 Sqdn that dropped paratroops on the night of June 5th, was bought privately by Mikey McBryan on Dec 28, 2018 off of EBay. He set a goal to have the DC-3 fly by June 6, 2019. With a tremendous amount of volunteer labour, plus donations of various kinds, she was rebuilt to being fully airworthy. C-FDTD had her inaugural flight on June 6, 2019, the 75th anniversary of D-Day. "Buffalo Joe" McBryan was pilot, Quinn Jones (an ex-Buffalo pilot now flying 777's for Air Canada) was co-pilot, and Ronnie McBryan - DC-3 Mechanical Genius, was Flight Engineer.
Mikey made a video log, with posts almost every day, and posted it to UA-cam - you can find all 158 episodes linked on Mikey's page here: onua-cam.com/users/McMakk
If you looke at Episode 149, from about 16m12s to 18m55s, you get a bit of a feel for the "before" and the "after.
Episode 156 was a special, the D-Day inaugural flight including cockpit video, here: ua-cam.com/video/WxgAppEPk7A/v-deo.html
The actual D-Day flight was also filmed by another UA-camr, Mark Brandon, and he made a 17 minute video, here:
      ua-cam.com/video/gP5TaUgBsog/v-deo.html
C-FDTD will be at Oshkosh this coming Tuesday. Wish I could be there - I live relatiively close to Buffalo Airways' big maintenance base in Red Deer, Alberta - a long way from both St. Hubert and Oshkosh, darn it. DTD is not going to be part of the Buffalo Airways fleet - she is a private aircraft registered to Mikey.
So maybe Hawaii Mars could be a future Plane Savers preservation project. Joe McBryan would love it, I bet, with his passion for historic aircraft. There would be a _lot_ of people who would show up to help with that one.

I saw this thing come in low to Pat Bay , now Victoria Int Airport , in about 60/61 . I was in a 12 foot boat fishing and this plane , all flat black at the time came around the point at about 200 feet above me . And landed in Pat Bay , Saanich Inlet , there were 3 originally as I recall , one was used for parts . They would practise right out front in the inlet , great entertainment on a summer afternoon.

There is only one left like this for fire fighting. Could it be built again for this purpose I wonder? That would be awesome. Or maybe an updated version?

Steered on the water with the outboard engines. On Sunderlands they often cut the inboard engines otherwise with all 4 motors on tickover the thing would pull itself along!

She sure is, from the time I was 3 I've loved her--both of them, and I'm desperately sad that Philippine is going back to the Navy. With only one Great Lady of the lakes and sky, our forests are even more at risk.

Every time I see anything on this woundful Air and Sea plain I think it's so good at putting out fires we need to build a up dated version. Anything that's been around so long doing that good of a job is worth learning from and if possible improving. 😁

That is some sweet footage and brought down from the sky so beautifully . Epic , thanks for sharing and also to this team and everyone in the Forest Fire Industry in BC right down to the small towns with fire fighter volunteers , you are all incredible people man . So from the Kootenay's and from all of BC .... THANKS TONS EVERYONE !!!! ...... Thanks industry for stomping out that fire yesterday HARD TIME , it was 1-2 km from my town , i watched the heli's , bird dog , and bomber (4 prop but not mars) annihilate it !!!! The strategies and maneuvers etc , its quite a sight to witness this skill and precision .
