      Depending on the context and situation, the meaning differs. You have to understand that at that time , not many foreigners in Japan . Mostly Portuguese monks, Dutch sailors , Portuguese sailors. As Japanese they always categorize themselves and others. So, yes , Anjin means pilot when firstly mentioned , but then when others uses it in different context and situation, it means « that » foreigners or « that » barbarian.

    • @stefanavious
      @stefanavious 28 днів тому +17

      There's actually two words they use to refer to John. "Anjin" is what shows up as "Pilot" in the subtitles while "Banjin" is what shows up as "Barbarian/Foreigner."
      Though, I'm not Japanese so it's possible that maybe it's the same word sounding different because of the various accents in the show.

    • @meruk8682

      @@stefanaviousI'm Japanese and you are correct. They do refer to John both as banjin or by his given name Anjin. Banjin (barbarian) and Anjin (Pilot in Old Tongue) are phonetically very similar so it's natural to mishear one from another. By the way, foreigner is Gaijin, and Banjin only means barbaric.

      Exactly. This man commands just about any scene in any show he is in, has been underutilized for some dumb reason. First time seeing him (for me) was in Last Samurai and his role just stood out because of Sanada's portrayal, he gave it more heft than the script deserved...he was excellent and I am so glad to see him heading up Shogun. It was masterful.

  • @Uldihaa
    @Uldihaa 29 днів тому +102

    They literally had a coach who specialized in body language and movement of the time to help the modern Japanese cast to connect to the Japanese of 1600. Hiroyuki Sanada is absolutely _fantastic_ as Yoshii Toranaga (aka Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate which would control Japan until the Meiji Revolution). He dominates his scenes, even when he says nothing.
    The costuming is amazing, and I thought it was funny how so many ended up walking around in rather heavy costumes. And I don't just mean those in armor! The women wore _at least_ five layered kimono, and frequently seven. And one poor woman had to wear ten to twelve layers! It's those layers that actually dictated how women walked. Believe me, you are _NOT_ taking even moderate steps wearing that.
    The sets were incredible and looked, sounded, and 'felt' authentic.
    One of the things that is mentioned in the behind-the-scenes videos that you can watch on UA-cam is that the vast majority of the cast, and a good part of the crew, were Japanese. Not Japanese-American, but actors and actresses straight from Japan. I thought it was really cool that Sanada mentions how pleased he was that so many of his fellow Japanese actors finally got to work on a big and expensive Hollywood production. That experience is invaluable, and probably played a big role in enticing Japanese talent to audition.
    And speaking of Sanada again, he was also a producer for the show. Several cast members mention how he would get dressed for a scene, do the scene and then immediate change to rush off to another scene being filmed as producer.

      I think it’s also important that this is based in an excellent book by James Clavell who was inspired by the real life story of the English navigator Williams Adams. After Adams proved himself to be incredibly resourceful to Tokugawa Ieyasu, he was appointed as a diplomatic and trade advisor of Japan and became his personal advisor on all matters pertaining to the Western world.
      He was even promoted to become Tokugawa Ieyasu's personal translator and became the first western Samurai.

      I wasn't sure about Anna Sawai either, but I must give credit where it's due - she plays the Japanese woman of the time with consummate grace.

      It was the game Nioh that first intrigued me into Sengoku period. Even though the show is based on a book with fictional names, it is quite clear that it is based on actual history with 5 regents, one of which becomes the eventual shogun. There are some big parallels with real history. For example John Blackthorne (William Adams in real history) came to Japan on the ship Erasmus in book/tv show, but in reality William Adams came on the ship 'De Liefde' (The Love) which was not the original name of the ship, that was actually 'Erasmus' (Dutch philosopher).

      The thing is that the show is very good at explaining any major moving parts even to people with 0 historical knowledge of the period.
      I went into it with what i would call a cursory knowledge of Sengoku era Japan, although Shogun takes place a bit further on from where my knowledge ends. So i'm decently well situated, but need a few pointers that the show can seamlessly add to the script.
      My mother who's watching with me has exactly 0 knowledge of japanese history other than the fact that Hiroshima and Nagasaki happened in WWII. So she has absolutely 0 clue about the culture or generally conflicts of the time period, but with cleverly written questions from Blackthorne she got to grips with the important parts of the show's background.

    You guys should watch the old 80s TV show because its completely different due to the fact it is told totally from Blackthorn's PoV. Like same book and stuff, but it's so different because we just see everything through John's eyes.

    • @jdpc9391
      @jdpc9391 29 днів тому

      Which is kind a better wait to do it cause the book's goal is basically to make you discover Japan and it's culture from the point of view of an occidental. By the end of the book, Blackthorne is Japanese and you feel like it when you close the book. I think the storyline that suffered the most in this new version is actually the Anjin part of the story. They changed so much stuff into it. All the Japanese part is way closer to the book (apart from the Ochiba taking control). But everything with the europeen (Blackthorne, The portugese, is less good in this series to me... Blackthorne and Rodriguez relationship especially).

    • @Spike2276
      @Spike2276 28 днів тому +1

      @@jdpc9391 I'm not familiar with either the novel or the old adaptation, but this version is clearly more interested in laying out a complex political struggle for Japan, with Blackthorne being a bit of a wild card in Toranaga's hand.
      It doesn't really immerse you in the culture as i imagine it would if it focused more on Blackthorne's perspective and experience, but it allows for a grander picture of feudal Japan to be painted.

    • @jdpc9391
      @jdpc9391 28 днів тому

      @@Spike2276 Yeah, the focus in this one is the Japanese. The main character of this series is Toranaga, not Blackthorne. The fact that we see him in the second scene of the series shows that he's the focus of the series. In the book, It only appears as a character in the second part out of 5. The Story still revolves around him but always through the eyes of Blackthorne. The perfect representation of the book would be to have the Blackthrone story told as in the old show but all the Japanese parts from the five first episodes of this show. (Cause midway through the show start changing so much stuff. There is no Ochiba/Ishido marriage. Ochiba is a really super secondary character in the book and there is NO way that in feodal Japan a woman could "take" control of the politics of the land even if she's the leader's widow and the heir's mother. This is a change from the era we are living in right now. I sound like i don't like this new show but i do. It's not a 10/10 for me as a guy who read the book a least 5 times. It's my favorite novel ever... so I'm a bit hard to please and i know it lol.

    • @Spike2276
      @Spike2276 28 днів тому +2

      @@jdpc9391 Yeah, Toranaga is certainly the star of this show. Blackthorne is often the perspective character, but he's clearly just seeing Toranaga's story.
      As for changes, well, like i said, i wouldn't know. But as for the Ochiba plot it's not the most egregious thing ever, as she doesn't directly take power but instead holds hostage the regents. And what gives her power isn't the fact that she's the Tayko's widow, but rather the Tayko's mother. So there's a little more wiggle room there for an aggressive takeover, and it's not a story without precedent in medieval times (for Europe, at least. I'm almost 100% sure nothing like it ever happened in japan. But the concept isn't alien to a western audience).
      With all of that said, i can see why you would be upset with changes such as bringing Toranaga into the spotlight at the cost of Blackthorne. But for someone with no previous knowledge, i do feel like the direction they took is more interesting for a TV series.

  • @Spike2276
    @Spike2276 28 днів тому +4

    This show is so good it actually got my mom to read japanese subtitles.
    But honestly, Toranaga himself is the start of the show. He doesn't actually appear on screen as much as you think, but each time he is there his presence is given meaning, along with every word that comes out of the man's mouth. His view on the world and other people reminds me a lot of Askeladd from Vinland Saga, and if your show reminds me of Vinland Saga in any way then you're doing something very right.
    I also love how Blackthorne's nature is what makes him stand out. He's a survivor, and unlike the honor-bound japanese who will die over the smallest cracks in their honor, Blackthorne values life, and not just his own life at that. He learns to respect the way that the japanese are so willing to sacrifice themselves at the altar of honor and loyalty, while at the same time having his own clashing view of "leave no man behind". He's kind of an asshole sometimes, but he's also a man of principle and that makes him likeable even at his absolute worst.
    And to round out the praise for the main characters Mariko is the perfect balance of firm, feminine, strong willed, and conflicted. She's a logical thinker who's bound in a three way split between her loyalty, love, and religion, and it's a joy to watch her figure out her own self.

    When Alex gives 6 or 5 to tv shows and gets ragged on we gotta understand that he uses this as his scale for good tv. This is his 10/10. When you see people clap for 6/10 you start to not trust them for your taste. Doesn’t mean he doesn’t like average tv. He just expects 8-10/10 to be up here. Atleast how I figure it. I personally am easier to please 😂

      This show should be a 7. It's enjoyable. But not even better than Fallout

      @@RealParadox85 really. I’ll have to see. Online people say shogun is peak. That said 7/10 is a good score.

    Crazy that you guys reviewed this but not Blue Eye Samurai, that show deserves a review as well. It kind of deals with the aftermath of Europeans getting kicked out of Japan too.

    Season finale today and no signs of a season two either. So sad, but great ride.

    In the book, Sekigahara happens off screen. The epilogue is chilling though.
