  • Animar leads a creatures matters deck with a plus one plus one counter subtheme. We want to get animar out, and then play creatures, those creatures grow animar, which increases the cost reduction on the next creature that we cast. This snowballs really quickly, and means in a couple of turns we can be slamming huge creatures for next to no mana, and if those big creatures are eniterly generic mana to cast, we can make them free to cast.

I was just brewing a deck for animar and ended up with most of these cards (if not similar ones) already. Wild

Instead of placing a Cloudstone Curio (which is more than 50$), you can put a Hullbreaker Horror and a Tidespout Tyrant.
When you cast a spell you can use their triggers to bounce one of your creatures, play it free, return another creature, and so on.

I just built a tyranid deck for Animar. Definitely recommend looking into those cards :)
The Ravenous keyword works wonders with animar.
Short explanation: tyranids often have X costs. If X is 5 or higher, when the creature with ravenous etbs you draw a card.
That way your big creatures replace themselves while also having scaling effects with Animar. You got Mawloc essentially being a creature spot removal that exiles, Sporocyst being able to fetch you 5 lands or more and a lot of other nice creatures.
I did lean more into a X-cost theme though, with cards like magus cane and my only mana rock: elementalists palette.
If anyone is interested, i could post my decklist

With how animar works and how I built him I prefer to only use card draw engines that say ‘may’ draw a card otherwise you have to completely play through a combo, you can’t cast your ancestral statue infinite times otherwise you deck out

Then just have laboratory maniac in your deck for an auto-win. All you need is an untapped island.

Built this deck recently! My current spicy tech for Animar is the Jin-Gitaxias, Progress Tyrant. While yes, they could just bait out the inherent counter from him by just playing any other instant or sorcery or artifact, it means that they have to burn mana they might not actually have in order to clear him or the board, thus protecting Animar. He kinda acts like a lightning rod in those instances and I feel like he ends up working really well as he ends up being cast for only two blue pips.

Its an expensive card, but, ragavan nimble pilferer would do wonders for this deck. Constantly creating treasure and exiling cards, and being played over and over for 1 red mana is amazing for animar

So no Sol Ring or Arcane Signet in that Deck?

What I did for my deck is cut almost all Mana rock artifact and included land fetch creatures.
      There are many upsides:
      - They give Animar a counter
      - their cost is reduced
      - they are a body for blocking
      - they fetch lands, which are board wipe resistant
      - they trigger other creatures matter effects like beast whisperer
      - they remove land cards from your deck, so the cards you will draw will be more likely to be creatures or the big creatures you're looking for
I just ordered all the cards, I hope this works as well on tabletop as it did while playtesting it online.
Hope this is interesting to you :)

I also prioritized creatures that fetch lands above creatures that tap for Mana because of what I mentioned before: board wipes.
Because of animars protection against the best spot removal colors board wipes will be your nightmare, especially if your Mana base is removed as well.
Also fun to not include Sol Ring in a deck for once

      The creature I included:
      - Ulvenwald Hydra
      - Primeval Herald
      - Sporocyst (Please, just include that guy, I'm not through the video yet but damn)
      - and the ones mentioned in the video
