One way of testing a Brake Master Cylinder

Thank you for the video. Fluid won’t come out of the holes when you remove the two brake lines? What about air getting in, would the master cylinder have to be bled again following this?
Also, how would you go about testing the ABS module?

Any time we fiddle with the brake system it needs to be bleed.
Process of elimination if there are no leaks and the master is good it can only be the ABS bypassing.
@@ralfsautomotive I was told if oil is found under the master cylinder it's definitely leaking but It's dirty under there along with the oil & I notice the same thing above where the master connects so it's questionable.. You think the oil from the leak could have traveled/spread up through the dirt?? & also wonder if instead of rubber I could use chewing gum for this test lol
@@Dan0rioN If there is Oil anywhere clean real good and replace the Master.
@@ralfsautomotive Sounds good. Would still be cool to test before i stall. Could chewing gum be used to block the master cylinder brake lines instead of rubber?

I applaud that you actually diagnose, instead of just charging your customers to replace every component "whack-a-mole" style, hoping to replace the faulty part.
This is why I started doing my own maintenance, to save money. Very freeing, satisfying and liberating too to know that I can do more and more on my car every year.
Thank you for sharing. This worked perfect. I was able to eliminate my master cylinder as the cause for my sinking pedal. I used an old transmission pan rubber gasket and a pair of nail clippers to cut a couple round plugs. Quick and easy.

Great stuff friend, I’m going to give this a go on mine that has a new rubber kit, but no pedal still, I have a Hyundai Getz, great to eliminate master cylinder problem before any ABS stuff. Brad
Where did you get a rubber kit to test? I assume you mean a rubber kit that you purchased but that is like the guy's rubber circles in the video?
Thanks for this. I now can test my Master Cylinder without taking it off the car. I have an under-the-floor type on my old truck, so don't want to change it out if I don't need to.
How do you get the plug out? The metal fitting goes deep into the master cylinder, seems like tightening the fitting back on would push the rubber very deep into the master cylinder?

i agree, i was going to take some old brake line fittings and weld the hole for the metal line closed.
but this might be easier ;)

What a wonderful method. My car has been in storage for years and it starts up except the breaks aren't working and this tio was a great tip which works well and has already saved time figuring out what's going on with it.

Car is turn off and pumping the brake pedal a few time times and hold it , is not the correct way to check master cylinder? Thanks
works Great! 1997 GMC Kelsey-Hayes EBC310 abs found a bad dump valve & used tech 2 to operate the abs motor

Hi there, thanks for that, would the ABS light not show a fault if there is an issue with it?
I placed the plugs in the master and then pushed the brake pedal but I can’t tell if it is sinking or not. It still travels a lot, but does not hit the floor.
Is it supposed to stay at the top? Not moving at all? Or shall it move a bit and that still means that the master is good?
If there is no air in the system the movement should be little to none otherwise replace your master cylinder

Why aren't you showing where you put the rubber?
There is only one place where it can go. Inside the Master holes. Literally everyone else that commented understood it.
Very smart thinking, just to be sure did you put the rubber into the master cylinder ports and than connected two hoses, also these two hoses are going to the ABS or the caliper?

Where they go don't matter to test the Master. That is just to make sure the master does not leak.
@@ralfsautomotive My break padel sinks mechanic told me I need master, 1st Master I bought from autozone 2nd one used OEM, still sinks, he still telling me I need new master but I think it’s something else that’s why I want to test the master, were you able to ake the rubber out? What you think about putting two bolts on and test?

I would think about trying this but I do not have anything to perfectly cut rubber in the right diameter so it makes a perfect seal. Do you think I could also test this by pumping the brake a bunch of times with the car off, and then press and hold the brake pedal to see if it goes down or not?
No that will not isolate the master

What i did was used a pair of nail clippers to cut the two round plugs. They don’t have to be perfectly round, just big enough to plug the hole.
