I totally dig Tim's lessons. He doesn't talk down to players and he's not here to show off. He comes across as a guy that wants/loves to teach. Really good stuff. Glad I ran across your channel.
Jimi said he learned more about guitar when he lived and played in Nashville for a year, and it becomes clear that this is country guitar played up the neck. I think this ballad style of playing was even more beautiful and compelling than his ballistic blues and rock forays. Jimi had a traumatic childhood with abandonment as an issue, he felt abandoned and alienated before he gave up. This is such a great lesson Tim.
Jeez Tim I see the reverence you share with me for Jimi....I was learning what I could. And one night I heard the Wind. And it burned through my soul like a forest fire . It still burns...he was here and gone. So fast. I saw him play at ondine...in ny. He was Jimmy James. He played behind his head. Then one day I was walking on the Bowery past the Fillmore and the marque was draped with his name and dates on it. I started to cry ... I felt so alone in a world without Jimmie. I never did see the experience...so what he left is a lifetimes work for us to revel in and play with...every tid bit of Jimmie teaching I put in my mind I can here in the freedom of my music. Look out now I still got my guitar. Love you brother...Rock on.
I've probably been playing longer than you, but I'm not anywhere near as good as you, you are one of the best players and teachers, it's mighty generous of you to take the time and explain this classic like you have, it's a mystery that has foxed me (in a good way of course) for a long time, oh say 40 years or so...The fun part is the "aha" moments when the riffs reveal themselves...thanks so much, Tim!
+Tim Pierce Guitar Yeah same ...thanks a million really well presented ..I can play advanced Space Bop Rock Fusion, but this has evaded me all these years,lol.. though I intuitively use a lot of Hendrix type fills in my playing without realising it..
Great! Thanks! "The wind cries Mary" is the first Hendrix song I ever heard and it was on my Granny's transistor radio. I was mesmerized. And now, thanks to you, I can learn all those details! Humble thanks!
Tim Piece is a class act, a great guy, and a national treasure, whether you've heard of him or not. His honesty and integrity in all he says and does is inspiring. I'm so glad to see him teaching and humbly making himself available to us common folk...a great man, indeed... definitely one of the good ones. Oh, and did I mention that he's one hell of a musician,/ guitar player. His "touch," his feel for his instrument, the way he can get the guitar to sound like himself or any of HIS guitar heroes is uncanny. He's also like the Rich Little of guitar players. Long live Tim Pierce!
I have been playing this song since 1969, (I will be 66 on Oct 8th) and I have never seen anybody do it better than this Cat. I can play every note in this song...except I have been trying to figure out the ending for over 40 years and VOILA! there it is. THANK YOU TIM! You are one hell of a Guitar Player. Dennis Dullea Fort Worth, Texas.
Tim, I appreciate that you explain how the riffs or fingerings fit in with the underlying chord. Many "lessons" on the internet just have rote learning of which finger on which string on which fret, which doesn't necessarily help us see how a riff is part of a pattern of a chord shape. I also appreciate your enthusiasm. Even though you've been doing this for decades, your love of playing shines through. Have fun at the Grammy Premier Show tomorrow.
I've been playing for years (I play for stress relief and am only a novice) and of all the videos I've watched on "how to play" this was above all the best/easiest and most comprehensive lesson I've ever seen. There is something about the way you explain what's happening that just "clicks" for me. You don't try to cram all the terms used for the exact form you use and you just play. I love this song and wanted to learn it, but didn't have the confidence in my skill level, but you've given me the inspiration and I couldn't be happier. Please DON'T STOP doing your tutorials/lessons because it would be an absolute loss. Thank you!
"It's ok to play this kind of thing differently every time, 'cause he certainly did !" DAMN ! That's the greatest advice you can get when you learn to play Hendrix tunes !
I’ve long felt Jimi didn’t give himself enough credit on this riff. The song should have started with no words until a full cycle of this was played. It’s amazing
I’m a total noob to playing guitar. I used to play drums but decided to make the change to guitar as I have always wanted to play. I have wanted to learn to play this song since I picked up the guitar. I love the sound. I’ve watched a couple tutorials and didn’t find them very easy to follow. This is way better than any other tutorial I’ve seen. Thanks for this I might actually be able to play this song before the end of the year!
Easily the best representation of an all time Hendrix classic. Without doubt the closest thing to Jimi’s sound I have heard thus far in life. Nicely done Maestro.
i just bought a super strat from Les Key at Meteor Guitar Gallery Bentonville Arkansas...man....your lessons are the joy of life to me...when i get off work I shall learn WIND CRIES MARY...thank you thank you Tim
Thanks Tim. I think The Wind Cries Mary is one of the most beautiful songs that Jimi Hendrix has ever written. Great tone. Thank you for taking the time and effort you put into making this video. Play On.
After feeling like I spent enough time on Hey Joe and the solo, I moved on to this. You make this so incredibly easy. I tried to figure it out a few times on my own and gave up. Thank God for you, the time you spent putting it together, and the technology that brings it to all of us. Tim Pierce = Good man!
Not only are you a great player, Tim, but I jst learned you are an excellent teacher. You made that look so easy and now I have picked up a few things I didn't quite do right for many years. Thanks, brother.
Mr. Pierce, I like your channel and have watched this vid before...then I pulled my guitar out and followed your instructions. What a joy! I pretend to be a guitar player and this was awesome sir. Thankyou
Crunchy, toothsome and ratherly epic. Broken down so mere numpties such as my good-self may merrily skip alongside this master instructor without too many stumbles and grazed knees. I wish to loudly proclaim your magnificence from the highest towers and across all the lands. Many, many thanks.
Watched many vids on youtube ,but none that are explicitly descriptive as yours. Thank you for passing on your knowledge and making it easy to follow .
The secret of great guitar playing is all about knowing what to practice, .how to practice and how long to practice certain pieces . ..no mystery . . a lot of guitarists won't pass this knowledge on .. it's great to see Tim and other people pass the knowledge on .. kudos to Tim and other people like him.
I wish i could go back in time 30 years so I could get half a good as you at playing guitar. The way you flow when playing these intros blows away all the other dudes teaching this, you make it look effortless
I tried to get this when Hendrix was still alive and I thought I got pretty closel But today after your incredibly patient and knowledgeable instruction I finally got exact omg what an ear you have tim. I'm a subscriber as long as your around brother! Amazing thank you so much for teaching us this masterpiece
Ya know.......... You have the Jimi thing down as good as or even better than anybody else I have ever seen on youtube or anywhere else for that matter. From the tone to the feeling you put into it, to the notes you add that are all your own. (it's not note for note because it's coming from within you and you have made the songs your own. Excellent!!!) I'm not a big blues guy and Jimi's playing has always been very foreign to me, but I am trying to get it. With your teachings this is possible and even likely. Thanks
Of all of the tutorials on this tune, this is to me by far the most challenging because of the fingering and chords. I say this as somewhat of a beginner. I come back to this just to challenge myself on the progressions and just mix in what I can. Great lesson!
This guy has got that delicious Strat sound perfectly...He knows what he up to for sure. It just Sounds just right... almost brings tears to my eyes...
Thank you Tim, excellent lesson, just what I was looking for. I haven’t really played much in 40 years. Between school, an army career, raising two families, work, blah, blah… and now “RETIRED” this is a great song to start all over again.
Thanks Again Mr. Pierce... Hendrix has been the most difficult for me to learn and you've helped me so much, i really appreciate it, you're a great guitarist and we are all lucky that you are a great teacher as well and are willing to show these lessons..
Could never thank you enough for all the amazing lessons you graciously offer us and also for the incredible quality of your teaching technique.... Thank you....
Thanks Tim. You really are a natural teacher- more than once I've picked up the tricky bit to something I've seen elsewhere because of the clarity of your description (and your relaxed 'it's all going to be OK' tone).
Tim, your something special. You are an extraordinary talent. I get a silly grin when I watch & follow your videos. Master of all styles...Thanks for sharing.....

Thanks for the lesson Tim, it's hard learning new techniques, concepts, etc. after playing on and off for almost 40 years, but I am learning a lot from your videos and I am appreciative of your easy going teaching style. Thanks again man.

i love listening and watching you play your guitar. its amazing that session guitarists like yourself and phil x who are behind the scenes of so much music we love , don't get as much praise as you deserve. LOVE your videos. keep em up. I'm a new subscriber and have been enjoying all of your videos
When I saw this video I grabbed my guitar and hunkered down. I knew it was going to be good. Thanks for showing me the right way Tim. I struggle with the thumb grip chords especially that F at first fret (old thumb injury). Hard to wrap my thumb around and fret all the high strings clean. This was very well done and yes your tone was much better than my rig at home. Very vintage and authentic. That old strat helped too.
Thank you so much Tim Pierce Guitar ! What's good with you is that you never show off, but you always get that perfect note that tickles our hears and mind ! We need more Hendrix lessons from you now :) !
I totally dig Tim's lessons. He doesn't talk down to players and he's not here to show off. He comes across as a guy that wants/loves to teach. Really good stuff. Glad I ran across your channel.
Jesse Stovall Thanks Jesse! :) #the-wind-cries-mary #jimi-hendrix
By far, the best lesson on the internet of this great song. Masterfully played, beautifully explained, utterly appreciated. Thanks so much.
Totally agree ! One the best : clear, nice explanations... thx
I agree 100 %
I couldn't agree more!! He "de-mystified" this legendary song for me and I'm now able to play it properly.
Thanks so much Tim!!
I don’t know who watches these and put a thumbs down?????

The "BEST" guitar player on you tube hands down
When I saw this video I grabbed my guitar and hunkered down.
Great teacher.......wonderful clear instruction. Thanks, Geoff
I am crying now, watching this. I am going back to practice now.
