Look at YOU grow Gary!!! Congratulations on your channel.. I have been following you for the past 4 years… wow…WE have grown! You are a wise voice in our gardening community- always sharing your knowledge and practical solutions for gardening…

Excellent point about NOT growing more than you actually need to eat. I always grow way too much and then get burned out harvesting later in the season, as well as (as you say) not being able to police the pests adequately. Gardening for 65 years and I still don't have a handle on this!
Took me a decade to limit my production and I still over produce lol

Same here! I do like to give veggies away so that is my story concerning growing too much and I am sticking to it!!😅❤
I'm getting regular harvests of crookneck squash, zucchini, lemon squash, cucumbers, and peppers. The pole bean vines are climbing the trellis tunnel. The cucumbers aren't. The cantaloupe and watermelon are loaded with flowers and climbing their arched trellis. My onions look terrible, but are doing their thing, forming bulbs. My tomato plants are huge, and loaded with fruit and flowering. Angel is determined to kill my ACE-55 tomato plant. The first Japanese made their appearance in my garden this weekend. Overall, the garden is doing very well. My potato harvest was decent. I have more chitting for a July 2nd planting date.
Nice production. Yep Ill be doing potato round two end of June or beginning of July

Quite a tour there!! Really enjoyed it, thank you for sharing with us. My garden is taking off as well. We have had so much rain, storms here in Central Missouri, that I forget to check the pots/planters for watering issue. The in ground rows stay really moist, but the plants in the pots have to be watered!! 😀
Full tour and I left out the small garden. Watering is the toughest chore across the board.
OK, you were so gracious with this content, I'll add.... (sorry)
Water more for sure in great, deep compost that will drain or dry out and sandy soil letting air in. Wet feet, clay in ground not so much.
Spot on, Gary for my deepest raised bed (14") of high OM that drains, possibly dry out quickly!
Good luck this year!

You should consider growing Queen Anne lace flowers. They’re “wild carrots” so they have similar flowers to parsnips but come in different colors
NO. Just maybe a dif variety of parsnip.❤

Your garden looks great! My roma tomatoes and sunflowers that I ordered from you are doing great. I have learned so much from you over the years! I binged watched your videos when I first started gardening. I started my first seeds because of you. Thank you so much for continuing to put out informative videos. By the way I sprayed my tomatoes and peppers with asprin. I am going to try it on my potatoes. I wish it worked on squash.
Thanks for the shop support. Aspirin helps those 3. See if you notice a difference. That is the best way to learn. Good luck.

You were right about watering! Im in White Marsh MD and after all this recent rain I figured the pots were good. But my potatos in grow bags were flopping and losing their green like you mentioned! Watered and fertilized and low and behold my other grow bags and pots are also kinda dry. Gonna up organic matter for moisture retention. I only have espoma plant food. I feel like it doesnt do much for potted stuff as the soil lifeforms arent as plentiful.
Yeah once the potatoes are large in green growth, they suck the life out of the soil.

Hi Gary, my onions were devastated this year as well but with Allium Leaf Miners which have made their way south from Pennsylvania into Maryland. Take a look for the pattern you may not have been hit by root maggots after all.
I will look. I didnt see any track marks in the leaves. I thought that was a sign. I did cut open a few and found little white maggots. But I will check out the life cycles of both.

That’s what I believe I have allium leaf miners…into shallots, scallions, leeks, onions 😟 what’s the best plan of attack or do they just show up every year? I was just looking at my shallots today and they had squiggly white tracks on the foliage.
Hi Gary! I came by because I couldn't remember the aspirin and eggshell recipes, and OMG you have set up a whole new she-bang (and a new book?)! I am so happy to see your continued success. Your teachings and channel really, truly, and sincerely saved my mental health during COVID (I found you in early 2020... so I guess we're into the 4th year!) and in the subsequent years. I have learned so much from you that I'm afraid I don't use this space as a reference as much anymore.
My own knowledge aside, it's comforting to hear your voice and see your beautiful Rusted Garden. So, I suppose now I'll be popping back more for the delightful company.
All to say-- keep it up, Garden Yoda! Hope you're well

TY so much for sharing!
Surely you turn a chicken/thanksgiving turkey carcass into soup. Substite 60% of your circularly sliced carrots with (perhaps a dif variety) of parsnips. Let them experience a frost-- great winter storage in your zone right there in the ground! Pull'em when ya want'em. Relatively long term viable canned soups taste, texture nearly good as FRESH.
I make lots of soups. I'll have to try the parsnips in there. People have been saying to use them that way.
Thanks!
Very Appreciated.

The pest that attacks my onions I believe is an allium leaf miner. It is a tiny brownish red insect that borrows into my bunching onions and leeks but mostly only in the late summer and autumn. I think the larvae is a tiny white worm. Is this the same pest that attacks your onions? I'm going to cover my late bunching onions this year and see if it helps.
it was a tiny larva in the base. Maggot fly eggs.

Your garden looks so beautiful so lush I’m in Texas so I am struggling already with the bugs vine wars what is that leaf foot bugs? I forgot they’re called but I put on gloves today and I went squishing away nicely and green.
I don’t do a lot of stuff. I don’t have enough room. I’m just getting these two beds made right now but they’re tall so I gotta fill them up with laws and stuff, but I have planned for sure to do a plenty of green beans and they’re getting ready to start beans, Poll beans, green beans so I can and then also I’ve already started making pickles. I planted so many Boston pickling seeds all over the place so I have pickles pretty much daily, but I’m trying to not pick them all till I wanna harvest several of us so I can make Brian and MAKES some pickles , I got deal really well. I have not been successful with. I’m trying different areas because that vine board keeps getting them. Everything looks so pretty and lush and the next thing you know it it’s just it’s dead and I’m gonna keep trying. I haven’t received one now. I see some for me, but I don’t know oh and I have plenty of bees all around my cucumbers, and I also even seen a bunch of lizards, which is good for me. I think it’ll kill some of the bad bugs 🌱🌱
green beans and Boston pickling are good ones. Good luck with the bores and enjoy the pickles.

In my case that goes with the stuff between or outside of the garden. C'mon you can walk a wee bit further to lop a head and harvest what the finches left for ya, eh?!
In my case (except for 2 pepper plants I lost today) the exterior cover crops (clover, vetch, mustard) and weeds/dandilion in the grass has been preferred.
I think I'm a bit more concerned!
Im glad the prefer the covers.
I so appreciate your videos! You are my go to channel. I am in PA same zone as you. Sonething is attacking my potatoes in a raised bed and the stems on just a little of them have suddenly wilted. Like gone lifeless and rotted. Any ideas? Tx.
Pull some look for maggots in the stems and below the surface. I am not sure what it is but rotted lower stem, is often a maggot.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Thank you so much!! Our HD does carry them!! I just didn’t know WHAT they were called in order to find them!!!
I’m interested in your treatment plan for onions. I’ve been plagued by the allium bugs for years I had to toss all my leeks and so last year I covered my Patterson onions with a row cover starting April until June to ensure they didn’t come and infest my crop. They come in early spring AND fall. I’m convinced the leeks really draw them so they are out for me going forward. I had some onions that stayed tiny so I pulled them replanted…(experimented) and they started to flower so I pulled them and found a few of the bugs. I hope they don’t get into my garlic because my understanding is they might. It’s really a shame because these are crops the deer won’t bother. Your garden looks really great 👍 so far ahead of my CT garden.
I will be doing a neem oil drench. And using insect dust at the base and washing it in. Spinosad. Working on ideas now. They got my onions and some garlic.

QUESTION. Do you hand water your hole garden with a water hose or do you have some sort of irrigation piping throughout? I have my first garden this now and it takes me about an hour with just 12 beds wnd 4 fruit trees... There's got to be an easier faster way?
I have 16 raised beds, three Greenstalks, sixteen ten-gallon grow bags, a in-ground 10 ft x 20 ft herb garden, and ten fruit trees. If I am lucky, it takes me two hours to water with a garden hose. Drip irrigation set up in zones, on a timer will save time, but at a cost. I look at it this way, I have the time, and need the exercise. I like working in the garden, and it keeps me out of trouble. It has taken a while for my garden to be productive, but now, I'm rewarded nearly everyday with garden goodness, and the season has just begun.
I do hand water. I have over head sprinklers for mid July if needed. You would want drip irrigation. I dont mind it. We typically get a lot of rain.

I have been plagued with the onion root maggot ever since I started trying to grow alliums. Maybe I’ll take a year off. Interested to see how you manage them.
Also I’ll never understand how people have too many zucchini…pick them young and tender, like less than half the size you’ve shown in other videos, and they’re so sweet and delicious you could eat them raw. Once seeds start to develop they’re nowhere near as good. Cook up quite a few at a time, problem solved, never too many. Problem is I can’t ever get any because of these dang insects!
Yeah. I'll be working on a solution. I hope.

What do you do to protect your carrots and other directly sown seedlings? Birds, squirrels and other urban pests keep ripping them out of the ground or chewing them away? It’s a small space that I’m dealing with but lost a lot of my young seedlings so had to pick up some transplants.
Luckily they are left alone. Snails and slugs are my worst pest for seedling and the baits mostly work.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN That's great. I have to figure out a way to manage the squirrels and birds. Netting might be the best solution but I hate the aesthetic.
We are already at 100 degrees. Tomatoes Re shutting down.

Oh I despise the white moth. It's my greatest enemy. Then slugs, groundhogs, rabbits, squirrels, stray cats. A squirrel or stray cat just dug out a container of recently planted potatoes and exposed 2 seed potatoes.
Lots of enemies.

What's the percentage of peppermint oil and water ratio please? Are you going to keep that tan tower or selling?
Keeping the towers. I have videos on peppermint oil. But it's 1 or 2 teaspoons of peppermint oil per gallon and soap so it disperses.

How can you tell if you have onion maggots and how do you get rid of them? Thanks.
Your onion stems distort, twist fall to ground, turn limp. I would use an insect dust on the and water it in. I am still working on a plan but next year, I am doing a neem oil drench and using spinosdad dust.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN I believe that’s what happened to my onions this year. I also saw little white worms eating the bulb of my transplants. I never had this problem before. Thank you for the advice.
My squash plants seem to always start out with only male flowers and then they get females
Yep. They figure it out as temps change. Not much we can do but wait on them.
