Honoured to have worked with Behram in both Mahindra and Tata. Having been privy to his travails at both companies I can only say this - two dozen incompetents cannot stop a thoroughly competent man with a great idea. Miss you Behram. Hope to see you on the great twisties on the other side.
The old one is like a friend who will punch your enemy first and then talk while the new one is the guy who talks first and then breaks jaw if needed. Love the video.
For me, a big reason for buying the first gen Thar was your father. I read those passionate observations he made on teambhp and even had some brief interaction with him. I just liked the fact that this was a product that someone cared about, not designed by a committee.
This gent knows his vehicles, thank you for the honest and in depth comparison. Thar is launching in Australia in 2021. I will be selling the Suzuki Jimny and replacing it with a decent upgrade like that of the Thar.
Wonderful comparison!! And the New thar is absolutely one of the most desirable product today. It’s absolutely brilliant from the outside and inside.. But feels so sad that after booking on 10 th of October 2020 still waiting for delivery..(six months now) I hope Mahindra & Mahindra do ramp up their deliveries. Wait is killing...
Like the fact that the review started with an off-road comparison, and not with some incessant blabbering of the machine specs. The heart of the matter addressed right at the beginning, that's how it should be. Also, one of the finest reviews from Autocar in a long time in my opinion. Just fitting for son of a man who loved his machines and his craft.
Just the context of it ... the anchor the family the past and the present Thar........ truly made me love this review .... for sheer honesty and the personal appeal .... the Thar today is surely a great Car but this is an ode to Mr. Behram Dabar.... because if it was not for him .... we would have never have this ever ..... 🙌🏼
Thanks to your Father Mahindra kept legendary MM540/ Classic in form of Thar and now that Thar has became a different animal all together. Urban animal with Always ready for Off road ability. 👏
We all know that cars have to be upgraded with day to day features of evoluting life. But, say whatever, Old Thar has a Legacy and that Legacy is never going to be forgotten ❤️
After completing the spiti trip (Pune to Spiti) we are stuck in Manali from past two days..our 4months old Mahindra got towed due to some OBD Check Lamp warning..the car is not able to pull beyond 1500rpm. The Mahindra service center tried to reduce the soot mass for last 2 days and now they are saying ordering a DPF filter is going to take another 7-8days and we will have to wait for it. Also they are saying fault is with us as we didn't do Regen while we didn't get any Regen warning. They are also saying they can't share the data now ,even after 2 days of analysis. DPF filter costs 70k and doesn't come under warranty. Even we were ready to pay just to join office in time, but now they are saying it will take 7-8days to get the DPF filter. Go for any other SUV it is just a good looking car and will make you feel you are driving a powerful car but it is just the feeling but in reality it is unreliable
Behram Sir was a true petrolhead and automotive legend. What he has given us in the older Thar cannot be replicated. Tech cannot replace the good old mechanics which will get you home anyhow while the new Thar can strand you in the absence of a proper service center. I love my the Thar, the 2015 refreshed one. If I feel the need to buy a more comfortable car, I will buy a Scorpio.
tbh... i would take a jimny cos... there's always a service center nearby, its rumoured to come in a 5 door config, and I don't want to wait 10 months for a car....i feel they are fair points.
I absolutely agree with you on your point about jumping into a river or pond with my Jeeps. And I ve had exposure to Jeep type vehicles since I was a kid. I also absolutely hate putting one of these vehicles through mud and water and climbing rocks etc unless absolutely necessary in the line of work. What none of these new entrant leisure off roaders or novices realise is the amount of invisible damage to the bearings and seals and brakes and axles and wheels etc because of the insidious entry of water and mud and muck. There is a lot to be said about the new Thar. It’s a fantastic vehicle and I am extremely happy with it as one of the early owners of this iconic vehicle.
The quintessential rear wiper is missing. Given that rear view is limited, they should have put in 360 camera. Also there isn't any inner lining for the hard top. The glove box is a joke. The fuel lid should have surely been remotely operated.
waiting for autocar to compare it side by side in all aapect with ford bronco.. not bronco sports but real bronco.. only autocar has resources & ability to pull that..

During chennai floods this was the rescue vechicle for entire street consisting of more than 10 houses
One of the owner had this Thar
Well Cyrus, I was knowing that your father was the father of Thar. Consequently you are the brother of Thar.. Love 💓
I'm choosing the old thar.. the way it looks just grabs my attention everytine I see one on the road. I'm going to buy one asap
The old one is like a friend who will punch your enemy first and then talk while the new one is the guy who talks first and then breaks jaw if needed. Love the video.

Now I'm curious what that first obstacle is called. Thank you, no thank you, Cyrus.
A wonderful, comprehensive review. Can always rely on Autocar to bring us quality automobile content.
This gent knows his vehicles, thank you for the honest and in depth comparison. Thar is launching in Australia in 2021. I will be selling the Suzuki Jimny and replacing it with a decent upgrade like that of the Thar.
Thar is 🖤 especially the new BLACK THAR .
sir ur dad is legend... salute to him... 💥
I used is bcoz legends never die..
The new thar is the *"Budget Jeep wrangler"* !
Here in Arunachal Pradesh, one can get the experience of off-road on a national highway.
It would be great if Mahindra launches a 5-door version of the new Thar. =)
You are 100 % right bhai
Yes and ruin it forever
Ah-no for that! 2-door cars are scarce in India (except for supercars), hence adds a nice touch to the vehicle.
@@thelyinglama218 how come it will get ruined? It will be more practical.
@@thelyinglama218 they won't get it
Both Father and son has done a amazing offroading.
Father is engine power.
Son has engine power + technology.
That last line of this video! 👌🏽
Old one seems to have a lift kit installed.
Son of fathher of Thar presents son of Thar. What an intro bro. very nice...
Wonderful comparison!! And the New thar is absolutely one of the most desirable product today. It’s absolutely brilliant from the outside and inside..

Wait is killing...
I booked last month will get it in December 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Which variant u have booked?
New generation Thar is much better than old Thar. Autocar showed nice comparison of these two SUVs.😀
(*off road SUVs) yaa
Very true
New thar has such a road presence😍
Huge respect for your Dad, man.
Old thar looks more wild, manly and aggressive than the newer one. Old one is exclusively built for wild and the newer one looks bit chocolatey .
I love a car which is born out of sheer passion.
Awesome review mate still prefer the old one though haha

Nice comparison test done in a very fair way. Well done from a very happy old Thar owner in South Africa.
Wow! Right person for the review. BD would be happy!
Old thar looks more machoooo❤️
Black thar is like heaven for true off-road lover.. and also fortuner black colour is like heaven with top floor

Superb 😍👌
Thanks A Ton! you made my Indian Independence Day. JaiHind. i am getting the 2015 version.

What a fantastic introduction.... Loved the father son .... Awesome

Cyrus brother admiring ur knowledge and ur vocabulary ..
Cyrus 'Cy' Dhabar, we wish to see your father's elusive collections of Fiats. Have a video on that too.
Old one looks more rugged and "jeep" like. The new one looks more modern, but lacks that rugged look.

Wow! Well done Auto Car India! Nice comparison video!
Truly a great tribute to your father🙏
It was such a delight to see both offroading together..Can I get a new thar for commenting first😄
No never because you are not the first. Liars...!!!
🚙
The old Thar is such a character the new design is good but the retro charm is missing 🤦🏻
The Old Thar & New Thar’s interior Quality is showing, the Specially Seat is Good in new Thar (L*W*H).The Exterior part Suspension is Superb...👌
Behram sir will always be remembered by any car enthusiast. God bless you Cyrus. Luv from Chennai.
They should launch a Thar 4 door version
Old design and new everything would have been a game changer
About time Autocar did this comparison🐾
I'm a big fan of both the thars...❤❤
New THAR love!🔥🔥

Amazing work @AutocarIndia ....👍👍...Thar is always ❤️
Tharoughly loved the video!
Wow really good review👍👍👍.
Love this channel ♥️♥️
Very nicely put @Cy 🤘😊 enjoyed the video
A very well done comparison! 👍🏼
Brilliant comparison review 👏
Great video, had me glued
THAR 👍
JIMNEY =Comment
tbh... i would take a jimny cos... there's always a service center nearby, its rumoured to come in a 5 door config, and I don't want to wait 10 months for a car....i feel they are fair points.
Who gives a damn to the Jimny? Thar always 👍
if we can get optional convertible soft top as an accessory from Mahindra on the Old THAR , life will be so easy & peaceful
Must say a very knowledgeable video..!!
For once, I am really proud to have ordered one,and the fact it's Indian is fantastic. I'm no Jeep junkie but it's such an icon.
I still prefer the old thar ; the new thar looks very boxy like an wardrobe, no curves and body lines
Wonderful Video.

Apart from the engine.. The Old Thar Exteriors infuse with the New Thar Interiors would have been the ideal THAR... Just saying ✌🏻🤘🏻👍🏻😎
The quintessential rear wiper is missing. Given that rear view is limited, they should have put in 360 camera.

The glove box is a joke. The fuel lid should have surely been remotely operated.
That old thar was a police vehicle in late 90s and early 2000s just loved that red light on top of it one of the most toughest things
Old Thar is the king for rough use till date , new Thar is a luxury car , Mahindra we still want old Thar also
Old thar looks more macho and rugged, and traditional like mm540
Awesome comparison 👍
No can beat the classic one😎
Anyone know the wheel size on the old thar in this video?
Wow this video was amazing
, milage in highway??????
Refreshing to see you present cars rather than present the news Cyrus!!! Great going
1st Comment:
Amazing Design by Mahindra for Thar. The best car designed by Mahindra ever.
Please upload detailed test drive review of the new thar diesel automatic
You should review more cars really liked your review
i hope they dont go the route how Range Rover went by making it more status and city styled losing out the reason why it was so loved.
make a video on old mahindra jeep... the model before mm540
Very good comparison 👍
waiting for autocar to compare it side by side in all aapect with ford bronco.. not bronco sports but real bronco.. only autocar has resources & ability to pull that..
Any update on the 5 door Thar?
Old is gold❤️
Awesome & Thanks :)
No one could have done it better than Cyrus...👍🏻
Both are pure💣🔥
Old is gold,🤘🤘
Both look good 🤩🤩🤩
Liked the presentation
Perfect detailing
The Late Mr Behram Dabhar was an active member of Team BHP!
Old school thar❤.
