I wish the DNR would add the question “fixed blade broadhead or expandable” when checking in an animal. That way we could actually see some more data on the debate.
Pretty sure ashby put a end to the debate long ago.
Hi Don love the podcast. You really challenge me, how can you keep your cool while discussing things I know you feel so strongly about. God bless. Let's Go Brandon.
I use a crossbow due to an injury to my right shoulder and Im thankful for my right. Personal experience is invaluable. Anyone who has hunted long enough has lost a deer. Archery in and of its self is a higher degree of risk but should remain. The last thing in the world that we need is more special interest rules and regulations to limit ones ability and options to hunt especially on private land. Anyone who hunts within the laws rather than wasting their life and time doing other fruitless things is a win. I prefer to think of all the benefits of hunting and being outdoors rather than the indifferences and certainly not in favor of outlawing the use of reasonably safe and effective equipment. The pursuit of outlawing is my main concern with your content. Knowing equipment and making ethical shots based on personal experience is the key and serves a moral responsibility. There is not enough evidence to support the margin of killing or not. Happy for you and your right to hunt in the most effective and ethical way based on your experience. May your two-hundos abound sir.
God bless and happy Mother’s Day!
Don- if you do not like xbows because it "makes things too easy" why do you shoot a compound bow and not traditional archery? isn't a compound bow a modern bow that makes things "easier"? thanks in advance for your reply!
I did shoot a recurve for several seasons
You are spot on there! I have too use x bow. I have had 3 surgeries. Cause me too lose strength in my shoulder. So i cant hold a compound back anymore. I dont knock anyone for whar they want too use. As long as there having fun and follow the law.
The problem I see with mechanical broadheads is SOME hunters think they can take their field points off and just screw on a mechanical without turning . I think brands of heads should have been left out and only debated mechanicals vs fixed. Great show guys.
Great debate, Men. Supported perspectives and shared respectfully. Maybe this will be more commonplace in our culture… someday.
Some excellent opinions from both sides! I think the biggest issue is lack of knowledge and experience. Regardless of your choice of broadhead, it requires properly spined arrows, tuned bow, shot placement, etc.
Too many novice hunters purchase a bow, whatever arrows they can find, and screw broadheads on. When this happens, failure is more prone to occur, regardless of broadhead choice.
I have bowhunted for 40 yrs ! Shot all at one point or another! Great debate and great points! But the one biggest take away is there are "garbage" fixed blade heads and "garbage" mechanical heads!! Do your homework! And buy a premium product to put on the killing end of your arrows!!!
To each their own but why not go organic with the food plots? My family and I eat the deer we shoot. Not only are all the toxic chemicals unhealthy for the deer, environment, etc... but definitely not worth if it ups my cancer risk. It’s not an impossible task like some would have you believe to do it all natural...bottom line is the deer will be healthier and so will you!
I believe Both types of heads have the ability to harvest game animals effectively. However, in marginal hits, especially ,marginal shots involving the front shoulder or spine, fixed heads have a much better probability to Kill AND recover the the animal. The failure rate for mechanical heads with these types of hits are very poor!
My wife hunts with a xbow......the Whole season!!! I use a bow all season too. I've taken her scouting with me and explained why I'm putting a stand where I am.
Which fixed heads do you shoot Don?
Slick Trick magnum 125gr
Ok, to go into what Don has said about the path archery is heading, how about 20 years ago the archers that hands down were against compound bows and believing that they would shorten season. Fixed vs Mechanical is a part of a contributor the same as arrow rest being a fall away or not, axle length of bow being longer and more forgiving or shorter , brace length , release either wrist strap or back tension etc… Please use what you want to and practice practice practice and have fun that’s the reason we all hunt. I enjoy the shows and great discussions and God will supply enough giants to keep the seasons long.
Watch the guys on TV. Lots of arrows don't go through. It's crazy when you pay attention to this. I've switched back to fixed and cut on contacts.
Im gonna guess the guy Don mentioned with bloodhounds is John Ingelken ?? Awesome guy !!
why is the first few minutes about food plots? get down to the subject.
Good debate no matter which side if the fence your on.
I heard a rumor the next debate will be done on a whiteboard. Fake News?????
One topic about the difference that I don’t think is brought up very often, is with a super sharp fix blade head it goes through the animal so fast they don’t even know what hit them. What I’ve seen they will just bound off for like 20-50 yrds and stop to look around to find out what happened. By that time they start getting disoriented and don’t make it very much further. Where as when you hit them with a mechanical no matter if it’s a perfect shot they will run 150-200 yards! What is everyone’s thoughts on this??
Disagree! had a 4 yr old buck go less then 20 last yr. 3 yrs ago had one that went 25 yrds . Shot over 20 deer with shwacker 2 blade. I Was a slick trick fix blade guy . One thing is forsure you need 60 lbs or more to shoot any mechanical.
I’ve used both I like both I think it’s about Shot placement
Well I hunt in heavy brush on the ground a lot in cattails and I would never use an expandable for that reason. Simple I have to shoot through grass and would not want them to open up. But I will say if you are a shity shot and a consistent gut shooter Expendables are hard to beat.
😂bruh
Great debate and both were respectful to the others opinion. Both had good points. I agree about most hunters wanting it easy.. That is not good if you are chasing mature bucks because they are being shot at young ages.. I prefer hunting to be harder, not easier.. I only wish more felt the same.
I'm sick of wind planning!!!!!
Great Episode, if a bow is tuned properly, bare shaft you can shoot any broadhead. I truly feel any fix blade cut 1 1/8 or smaller will fly like a dart 🎯 ( field point). The mechanical broad heads fly so well because they are 1" or smaller closed. I truly feel shot place ment is everything bottom line!!!!
Tune you arrows. Then a fixed blade Flys just fine.
Can I use regular round up on gen 2 ?
yes - gen 2 is glyphosate tolerant (aka round up ready) enlist beans can use round up, 24-d, or liberty
I’ll stick to my cover crop and crimping! Very very little chemical and fertilizers needed.
First of all Don was way to subdued against Joe. The primary sponsor?! Second . No doubt mechanicals are better than they used to be. However. Fixed blades penetrate better. There is No chance of a fixed blade failure. (Failure to deploy) etc. Also. Tune your bow or have someone tune your bow where your broadheads fly like your field points! It is doable! Next. Bow hunting is a close range sport! No One has any business shooting past 40yds at a Live animal in a hunting situation I don’t care who you are?! God Bless. Love the Podcast!
So a cheap replaceable blade fixed broadhead can’t break apart on impact??? Causing “failure” check yourself young man!
@@austinphillips9966 Well I don’t shoot cheap, and mostly one piece cut on contact. I’m 52. Last I checked I was doing fine. Thanks for the concern.
Allow me to correct one thing I said. Currently in the quiver 2 blade Magnus. You can replace the blades on these. However Way more reliable than the flappers!
Don let me know about UA-cam and what your going to do. We can all band them liberals what needs to happen anyway. God Bless
They all wanna be Grizzticks when they grow up.
