Crusty as crusty gets. Glad you shut it down and replaced it. CO is not something to mess around with, I lost a good friend from a faulty water heater that leaked into his house. All he had was little disks that turned black when exposed to high levels of CO. He never checked them and went to bed early one night, he never woke up. Great fix as always.
Rick AKA Trek2400 : Same thing happened to a neighbor. A young man in his early 20s, went to bed with his cat on the bed. Both were found dead the next morning due to CO. Really sad.
Here’s the kicker to this video. That is a 2002 Goodman furnace, and it has a 25 year heat exchanger warranty but Goodman no longer has replacement heat exchangers for those, so Goodman has been given whole unit exchanges to honor the heat exchanger warranties. If he would have checked the warranty status, she would have only had to pay for labor to have the unit replaced.
Yeah your 100% right
@@MrBugsier5 what do u mean??
Coming from the guy that just said "the fan pahht and the gas pahht need to be seperate" he probably doesnt bother with checking warranties on anything with rust on it.
so replace it with another piece of shit goodman... so it can fail and become a hazard again.
That's what I came to the comments for... I swore Goodman had at least 20 years for heat exchanger
Thankyou for preemptively checking for gas leaks. I'm like a hounddog in detecting them. When my hot water heater was replaced they left me with minor gas leak. I put up with it for a time but it finally got up to my crawl and I ended up having it fixed. I am incredibly sensitive to the smell of mercaptin. I had to show them where the leak was as their detectors couldn't find it.
I’ve a gas furnace pushing 30 years old... now I have a general idea of what I should be looking for, as I know I need to be looking at replacement soon anyway. The way things are, I’m hoping I can squeeze one final season out of it, but that depends on what I find when I check that exchanger.
Great work Steve, keeping customers safe and comfortable. Those Rudd furnaces are awesome, had a Rheem 75k btu 80% at my last house, kept it nice and toasty.
The First furnace has a Lifetime Heat Exchanger warranty on both Exchangers. Local Distributor should have in stock. 2nd unit, if you find Tubular Heat Exchangers with blown out u-bends it has a Airflow problem and/or a Firing Rate issue.
I thought this video was just gonna be all bad news at least it's like a massage. It has a happy ending.
Also it sure was a quick climb to 101k subs
Firefighter here. Ma'am How do you not have a CO Detector?.... that's just common sense. Steve thank you for buying that dummy a CO detector. Unbelievable. Stay safe brother.
@@MrBugsier5 I have to agree with ya
Hey Steve. The furnace was manufactured feb of 2002 according to the serial number. Those heat exchangers are usually warranties for 20 years fyi
Keep the vids coming, I'm a training plumber and love watching your stuff
Wow. This new furnace is really quiet. We've replaced our 30yo furnace/ac last year with Trane combo. Every time a heater starts up it sounds like a jet plane is about to take off. I'm not sure we need this turbine beast to heat up our small townhouse.
Noise level is usually determined by return air size/length. Longer returns with better insulation will be way quieter than the opposite
replaced one last friday...carrier high eff.....tripped out roll-out...stunk like sulfer and burned your eyes...has new one in 3hrs...made a temp plenum hook-up with some 30 gauge tin. Edit saw the zone controller...they kill a furnace fast if only one zone is running ...even with a good by-pass.
1. The "Cracked Pan" is called a flu collection box.
2. It's not a 1999. It's a 2002. It's in the Serial #.
15:43 Man, I like the way you join the two assemblies together (with the cross-braced/braked sheet metals')... they are a work of art! :)
A furnace replacement video finally
Just did an install today R96 115,000 btu Rheem 2 stage 👍
It went from S. Show to how you doing Mama, To "She's a Crusty one Mr. Grinch!" To being done properly and tyhe client Honoring you and you Father with doing the Job. If it were me and you were in my area I would have you do the job. Great job, nice sela on the airfilter air loss. And you probably saved a life or a family, the CO detector downtairs is the savior of the whole job. God bless you, the dog,the truck and the ghost in is sweatshirt! "
I'm not afraid fo no ghosts!"
and there you go... kinda sad seeing those heat exchanges rust like that but they have to be thin to exchange the heat. good job
Fixed my lunch and open youtube to see a long heater replacement vid from the Lav Man! Thanks Steven!
By looking at the front burner plate tells me that thing may have been running like that since last season. Another sign is looking at the gas pipe. It has surface rust meaning a high moisture basement. That in itself may contribute to shorter life for the heat exchanger. I remember back in the late 80s to maybe into early to mid 90s, Goodman had major problems with premature heat exchanger failure on the GMP series. Looks to me like they just changed the model number. Would not install one in my house. In my opinion, there are better made units out there.
My Goodman made Amana 95% from 2001 crapped out last year. Heat exchanger weld joint between primary and secondary failed. Because Amana has a lifetime furnace replacement warranty on heat exchanger failure, I ended up with a free Amana 96% 2 stage. The new one is clearly a big improvement over the old one. Much quieter, uses less energy, and the casing seems more solid. The HVAC guys I know tell me that 20yrs is pretty much the expected lifespan of a high efficiency furnace, these days.
1999 is the design certification year, manufacture date is 2002 Feb (0202...) as indicated by the first four digits of the serial number.
So basically combustion gasses were mixing with the the circulating hot air being pumped into the house? Damn that's scary.
HOLES in the damn exchanger not just cracks too!!!! I think this is the video where the lady was asked if she had a CO detector and she said "I'm not sure"... that's scary too!
Nice job Steve. I would bug you about furnace heats air and boilers heat water like it was done to me but I'm not going to be that way. lol 😂
Nice job being passive aggressive dude😑
First 2 # of serial 02 2002 was made on Goodman
@@dirtychaosoff-roaders8100 huh?
@@Bryan-Hensley this video clearly shows the undersized return so good luck on any warranty claims!

If it was registered by builder...
20 year.
If not...no luck..
Most time they do not add or do warranty online..
So ,im sure steve ran that by .
4 leaf clover!
Great job.. Steve Lav inmore.
Love that sheetmetel work..
One thing for sure..
She will.not have issues for ,well past manufacturing warranty..
Nice job, great install...

She's got humidity issues in her basement, possibly compounding the corrosion issues in her furnace. She needs to put a dehumidifier down there, plumb it into the condensate pump, and let it run, knock a few percentage points off the RH down there. That should keep her stuff in good shape, knocking down any mold and mildew issues.
For folks that keep commenting "It's under warranty", not honest. Well if you read the warranty on any unit or part in the U.S. you will find it is valid if installed correctly to manufacturers' specifications. As a service person looking to make a warranty claim, you have to actually evaluate that and report what you find. Sure you could "lie" and try to obtain a free unit for your customer but how would that make you more honest than the straight shooter that calls it as they see it.
This unit is not installed to manufacturers' specifications, and additionally, the space has environmental conditions that added to the potential for failure. In my experience, Goodman would honor a warranty on this, but only if you were a "rip-off" repairman requesting one for a properly installed and serviced unit.
Steve it looks like you got your money’s worth out of it that coil brush.
You do fine work Steven! Thanks for the vid as always!!!
Excellent job Steve , well done , piece of art to my eyes
Hi , your reply makes me worry = why are you saying that !! It has been working for years with the old one .????
Are you saying that from day one = the installation was not according to the book ????
I am courious and looking foward to your next statement ( i am with you , as friendly exchange with you )
@@sefaucon3839 there is a specific cfm calculation that should be done with every new install to make sure the ductwork can provide all the CFM the system needs. Otherwise you will be overworking the motor, have issues with ac starving for airflow. 85% of houses that I go to have duct work that is undersized because most contractors suck at their jobs and ruin it for the good guys.
Very good , now i understand what you are saying and what is involve here .Make good senses to me .
Thank you very much for your explanations and also for the time here that you took to explain to me
Very appreciated and be sure that i will keep an eye on that aspect !!!
Once again i am very please with your comments because in general people don't have time to spend with other people to share good nfo and experience of yours
Thanks again, you are welcome anytime in my book 👍✔️😋
Nice 1st class install Steve!!!!!
It bothers me how that lady was acting like you were lying to her...
Especially when you told her the date of the heater like you were literally looking at the plaque at the date and she was laughing like you were lying
"Shes a crusty one Mr Grinch lol" damn that A coil was dirty
Super installation Steve. Looks so good!
So how do you determine that you didn't need to hook up combustion air to exterior? Kinda wish you showed the panning... I love that for some reason....probably you figure you've shown it enough but still....as always great video!
Return is undersized along with the filter. Not enough air going across the heat exchanger. Heat exchanger is getting way to hot.
Definitely cracked no joke. Very dangerous.
Houston, we have a problem!
Nice work Steve! Hope all is well with You buddy
this biggest problem... its a goodman
Nah.. not like the the undersized return had anything to do with a cracked HE. It has to be the brand of equipment.
Another fine job!!!
Nice clean install
115k btu furnace with a 16" flex return and a 16x20x1 filter return.??? have fun with another heat exchanger issue in 10-15 yrs. nowhere near enough airflow for that big guy.
Tbh, just went down the UA-cam rabbit hole and landed here.
He was def reading a script in the beginning
Serial number 0202- says unit manufactured during 2002. Either Feb. or second week of Jan
Don Horn your right about that the 1999 is the patent or certification year for the machine, I’ve confused the two before myself.
I was always under the impression that the Year of Manufacture is encapsulated in the Serial #.
So good misfortune. That burned wire may have been a lifesaver.
That furnace was from 2002 serial number said 0202
I had a 16 year old carrier furnace and it had the same problem this furnace in the video I'm glad to have that piece of shit out of my house lol
Feb 2002 is born on date. manufactures Warrenty Steve is usually 20 years.
Looks good
Hi Steven I really enjoy your videos. My father's Goodman GMP075-3 furnace had a cracked heat exchanger. I wanted to help him replace it. When I took it out I heard the rear brace fall off the back of the heat exchanger. Can you tell me how to put it back on? There has gotta be a trick. The unit is installed vertically and I pulled the exchanger out through the front of the unit. My only guess is that I have to pull the blower out to shove the bracket on the back of the heat exchanger cells. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Nice 👍 job Steve on the furnace install what gas solution leak detector do you use that is pink I would like to know does it freeze in the winter thank for all the videos
Nice install.. Just wondering. i heard you ask the lady to set both thermostats for a call for heating.. I was wondering what the temperature rise was when just 1 zone was calling for heat and the other zone closed down. Any zone damper bypass or dump settings?
Hey Steve, what's you take on on Tigerloop oil deaerator S220. Does it eliminates the need to bleed the pump after changing the filter?
Looks great love your videos
Hey Steve how's your day I could tell the heat exchanger was bad as soon as I saw the wire and the look of it
That furnace was made on the 2 quarter of 2002
Great footage and editing Steve. Thanks! Nice clean work, looks great! Great timing too, it sure got cold after that!
Congrats on passing 100k subs, now 101k! I subscribed 1.5 yrs ago when you had 25k. Wow! Dont change a thing with how you video and your personality. Its working great. Some guys try hard to purposely entertain and its annoying
Lady go up stairs and let him work.
As a customer she does have the right to know what's going on
Clean it the right way and install it the right way.
Nice job.
Goodman units not good anymore?
Nice job Steve!
Great install Steve
that furnace sounds like your truck lol
Just love your chuckle!!!!!!
nice new unit. quiet too
unit was made in second month of 2002.
@@Bryan-Hensley your right, it should of had a 20 year warranty on HE, and you can replace the HE in about 4 hours, but you still have a 18 year old furnace, with a cracked collector box. Better to replace the unit.
@@Bryan-Hensley yes you have to inform the owner about the warranty, but if the unit is in bad shape it's still better to put your money toward a new unit. I just pull the blower, to clean the secondary HE. A pain in the butt, but easier than pulling the secondary.
@@Bryan-Hensley sure you can a small wire brush and a vacuum cleaner that sucks and blows, will save you a lot of time.
Well that stinks. My 90+ is a 1997. Been worried about it for a while. I knew at the 20 year mark it was about due.
Steve. You told her it was from 99. That was the “code” year. But the serial 0202 says it was made in February 2002
I'm like your videos because give good ideas

work of art, Steve. make some working man food vids now
Good you left the dog home in the cold weather.
Were they supposed to take the dog to school? Some dogs live outside even in the winter
@@gatewaysolo104 THAT IS JUST WRONG! THE DOG WOULD FREEZE TO DEATH! I HOPE YOU DON'T HAVE ANY ANIMALS
Good install. Return is way too small. Needs more air. What was temp rise.
It kills me how many technicians out there don't know how to calculate airflow. It also makes me laugh when techs call me and ask me for help and I ask for the static pressure and the response is always "it's good." Okay... that's not what I asked. What is the actual system static? "Oh I haven't checked that yet."
I don't normally say crusty but when I do it's followed up by musty.
OK I have a question...
I hope you read and answer this...
With out having an impact to the UNIT.. What will cause the heat exchanger to crack????? I mean a guy I know has a natural gas furnace that is super old. Probably from the late 70s maybe. Still runs like brand NEW. Only thing major that gas been REPLACED blower motor and a switch of some type.
So how does a unit from 99 need to be replaced in 2019???
this guy also kind of sounds like Coach Steve from Big Mouth
Underrated comment
how much for new furnace install??!!😅
glad i installed an electric furnace
10k watts 125 bucks plus wire and breaker
and the cost to run it...good luck!
anthracite keystoker 90K btu. efficient, robust, and reliable. cheap heat too. i bought my stove used its a 2006 $700 used. i have had it 4 years already. extremely reliable, i always have heat.
it has a stoker motor, combustion blower, and a blower to push the heat out. it has a simple heat activated device to turn on the blower.
best of all i was able to hook it to an existing masonry chimney so the installation costs were limited to a hearth pad, black pipe, and CO2 detector.
Clean install... she was a crusty one mr grinch
Those brown skin goodman furnace have horrible heat exchangers. They fail most times at the rivets on a serpentine heat exchangers, or with a tubular exchangers on the first turn or were the connection is made with the collector box
Nice install 👍
Nice job, Steve
Nice
Nice one Steve!
Excellent! Thanks
Are goodman's Junk? Why would someone use ducttape on the piping?
Goodman’s are absolute garbage
Clean work man!
No warranty on that thing?
Good enough for this neighborhood. OTFLMFAO👍
The fan paaaaatt
How much does a heat exchanger cost?
Some clean work Steve 👍 who are the trolls that watch your stuff just to give you a thumbs down . Little punks scroll on and don’t watch 🖕this friggin guy films all his jobs so you can learn for FREE .
Relax people are entitled to their opinion, however stupi, ignorant, or misguided. Lol
Don’t hold back chucky boy, tell us how you really feel.
great video
You should use mastic rather than tape
The units from 2002 lol.
Wow that thing made out of bent up automotive exhaust pipe.
I had this same problem with my furnace and it had to be replaced lol
Time to break out a pen and pad and draw for the lady how the furnace is supposed to work... Flame is drawn up into separate metal ?tubes? And the flame's exhaust travels inside those tubes and is vented to the outside...
the blower blows over the outside of those metal "tubes" making hot air and the hot air is directed into the home... What's happened is those "tubes" have broke or cracked meaning the dangerous exhaust that is supposed to be within those tubes is now escaping out of the tubes and is blowing into the home instead of being sent outside.. Very very dangerous... This is why the flame is "roaring" it's the fan blowing over the cracked "tubes" creating a sort of vacuum and drawing the flame up...
Nice vid.
