If you pollish the edge of acrylic that goes into the base, the light will go thru the acrylic will be much brighter. You can do that by using a propane torch and just go across the edge to get it warm enough to smooth itself out. There are other ways to do it without using a torch, but the torch is much faster. Just don't get it so hot that it starts melting everything.
not if you cut it on a laser, the edge is already polished if your settings are correct no torch necessary, now what you can do is sand the all the other edges to frost them so that the light bounces back a little that will actually help but yay no torch needed sorry Garrett!
Use a MAP Gas torch for polishing acrylic - the propane torch may work alright, but a MAP Gas torch burns much hotter and it’s better for thicker acrylic. Be careful not to burn the edges! Use safety protection and make brief passes on the jagged edges. It might be overkill, but I just wanted to share. Thanks!
i can not thank you guts enough i was really struggling to make nice quality stuff with my glowforge until i found your channel garret your explanations and tutorials are prefect for regular everyday people kim your art and style is simple yet amazing. wish i could share some of my work with you guys.

I do this a lot so it's what helps me.

Using imager to adjust the picture, Lightburn is a lot more powerful than you know and can do all of that and more you could have done all that in half the time just using your laser software.
Yes! We have been using Lightburn for a while, mainly use it for cutting files developed in Illustrator. Lately, we have had lots of requests to do more engraving. We plan to do a lot more in Lightburn. Thanks Crafty Crafty! ~garrett
My Dad and I did this kind of thing in the 80s early 90s with plexiglass and a wooden base and hand engrave designs with a light source under the plexiglass. If we only knew!
These look great...i was all excited to try it since i thought you'd be using and xTool 10W or 20W. Bummed because i keep hearing it can't be done. What was the "hack" or tip? Others talk about masking it, but i didn't see any of that here.
@@KimandGarrettmakeit Ah, didn't see that. Thank you! Glad to see it's in XCS also. I only have the F1, so doesn't work well with Lightburn. Hoping settings will be similar... Looking forward to trying it now! 😃

You guys rock, I got an ortur 2.0 will this work bought my laser 2 years agao and so scared to try and burn house down looking for settings for this machine any help would be appreciated
If you are using an image processor like imagr all image adjustments should be done in imagr and nothing should be changed in lightburn besides power/speed and making sure pass through is checked even dpi should be set it in imagr
I’m trying to figure out why you have to reverse the image? When I engrave like this using glass, I will lay a piece of black foam core on my wasteboard and then lay the glass on top of it. When it finish the image is beneath the glass and the smooth side has the correct orientation. I have not tried this method with acrylic, but I have some that I will try today. Hope to have a video with the glass shortly.
Quick question about something no one talks about, lots of videos about ideas of what to sell or getting your laser business going etc. What I don't see is anything about how do you get orders? If from Etsy, do you get instant notifications that you received an order? If selling locally do you use the square etc. How do you receive orders?
Followed this to a T and at first I thought my laser wasn't firing but when it gets to the cutting part of it. It cuts just fine... I tried with higher power setting and it engraved it but not well. Any tips?
Try that the shape of the acrylic is not larger than 8" wide x 9 high and that the engraving is not so deep or the light will not reach the top as you can see in the Vans logo.
I don't see how you're able to do this, but I hope you can help. I tried 2 different LED strips and they just can't properly light up my acrylic sign. Mostly it's a faint light near the top where the strip is.
@Kim and Garrett make it HI!! As cool as Xtool looks they are way over my price budget. I will definitely check out you video though!! I'm in Canada so pricing is different up here

The etching was done on the front of the acrylic, so they would flip it to have a flat surface to the front. And now it is correct.
What size is the acrylic you used in the video?
Great video guys. Ive done a few of these with my CNC machine. Arent you concerned about using sports logos without permission?
They look great
Love this idea!!! One question, and you might have already mentioned it, but what is the thickness of the acrylic that you use?

You can etch on the Glowforge, but probably not to this level of detail.

You are using a CO2 laser, what about other laser types? I know food lasers go through the acrylic and would burn the protective film on the back.
People were selling these at the photobooth expo for like $250@
Actually that is not the process, if you used Imag-R you set the layer to passthrough, and you dont adjust the image in lightburn
Do not use alcohol or any kind of solvent on acrylic, as it will cause it to crack.

These may be great, but the batteries don't last long!

Your engraving seem to be too deep. Either those LED bases are weak in power, or the engraving is too deep in order to let light go through it.
Love the tutorial, the music is so distracting, repetitive, and quite frankly annoying. Sorry, but true.
