Taylor’s American Dream AD27 Delivers All the Tone Without the Frills

  • The American Dream is alive, well, and living near San Diego, at least if you’ve been dreaming of an affordable American-made, all-solid-wood Taylor guitar. Launched in the midst of the pandemic, Taylor says its new American Dream series was “born from adversity”-an effort to make an affordable guitar available in a year that’s been a nightmare for so many. Starting at $1,399 street, the new Dream’s price sits in between Taylor’s 200 and 300 series.
The line consists of two models. I tested the AD27, which has the somewhat uncommon combination of a mahogany top and sapele back and sides. Its sibling, the AD17, combines a spruce top with ovangkol back and sides. Both American Dream models have Taylor’s Grand Pacific body shape, and other sizes and shapes are planned for the line. The review model was purely acoustic but is available with Expression System 2 electronics for an additional $200.

I got this and really am impressed with it. To me, while it is a dreadnought type of shape, it is comfortable to stand and play as well as sit and play. This, and a Martin 000-15m are my 2 guitars.

@@sooparticular That's nice I love mahogany and slotted headstocks so much.. Taylor's used to be my go to but lately I like the warmth of martin. Taylor sounds like a plate of dishes hitting the floor.

Lots of reverb added in post on this video, I own one and this isn't indicative of the tone. I love the Taylor bright chime, but this guitar has a lot less of it.

It's pretty comparable in price to Martin's all-hog line. Not my thing. Still sounds to much like a modernn Taylor which I don't prefer, but the price comes where I'd expect from budget American made. Personally, there's a lot of other new guitars for cheaper that I'd prefer, or as you said, I'd really look for a deal on a used instrument. I picked up a '76 Guild dread(a very good guitar) for around $650 and it served me well for the last few years until I picked up an '87 Taylor 510 (one of the best I've played) for $800 before tax. The 510 had a repaired top crack and a slightly bent tuner button.
That's my advice as a working musician to others in the same boat. Look around for deals. Take your time.
