  • I've decided to add a small orchard to my yard in 2022. I was happy to see that both Tractor Supply Co. and Home Depot have begun receiving their Spring nursery, and tree shipments in my zone 6b. I picked up some apple and peach trees and compared the sizes as well as prices between both Tractor Supply and Home Depot. I currently only have blueberries and Raspberries planted in my garden. I'm really excited about adding some fruit trees. Do you grow fruit trees? Any tips that you find helpful to someone starting with fruit trees? Please comment below.

      Hi Jess! I'm excited to give it a tree. I know it will be some time before these baby trees give me fruit, but I love the prospect of planting trees always! 🌳 thanks for watching, and following along! 💚

    We're going to go through our orchard builds together this year! I'll watch you and learn from your mistakes!! George looked good in the boots. All I could think of, while I was watching him was "I've got a snake in my boot!" Fun video!!

      Hi Rich, oh yay about the orchard. Well I hope I can learn from YOUR mistakes also 🤪 it should be fun! I've set the expectations way low and not expecting apples & 🍑 for at least 6 years 😅 🍎🍏

    Nice video! We have lived on our 20 acres for 3 years now! We have older fruit trees, pears 🍐 and apple 🍎! We have started an apple orchard by adding trees every year!

    Steph, George totally rocked the Woody/Indiana Jones impression! Yes, I had to watch this twice because I was giggling so loud that I couldn't hear what you were saying. I love going to Tractor Supply just to see all the baby ducks, chicks, and bunnies. I hope your family has a wonderful week, and you might want to do another TSC run to get those boots for George... Father's Day is coming!

    Love those stores and wish we had them in The UK! Great to hear about the small orchard project you are undertaking, and hope that our ideas will be helpful. We will finally be completing our small orchard project later in the week. Best Wishes, Paul.

    awesome find! I wish I can find those kind of rooted fruit trees here in zone 3, it's nice to wait and see your trees grow bigger as years passes by. Awe I thought Woody would come into life but maybe next time 🙂

      Hi Nanay! I was happy to find these trees as they were much more affordable than the potted ones. I know they will need a bit more care and patience to get fruit but it's okay. Gardening is all about learning patience right? Thanks for watching, and for your comment 💚

    The Red Haven peach tree should make you happy! Ours, from TS, are 4 years old and we had 4 peaches last year. This year we expect a LOT more fruit! Tasty, tasty, tasty!!!

      Hi Pamela! Our peach tree survived, as did 1 of the apples. Bare root trees are difficult. Hoping to do a follow up this Spring, and perhaps even buy a larger more established fruit tree to replace the bare roots that didn't make it. How great that you've finally started getting Peaches!! hopeful for ours

    It may sound counter productive but I’d prune the tractor supply trees with no branches down about 1-2ft to get some strong scaffold branches this year. Also, thanks for the reconnaissance. I’m heading to TS now 😂

    • @HookedandRooted
      @HookedandRooted  2 роки тому

      Hi there! I definitely plan on pruning it down. I've been watching vids that say to do that to get lower branching structure and not to let the tree get bigger than you can reach. Also, oli deal with lots of deer in my yard. Hoping they dint orune for me. Thanks for watching! 🍎 🍏

    Thanks for sharing this overview! I have both stores in my area but haven't gone looking for trees yet. Curious if Tractor Supply had any other types of trees, or primarily fruit trees? We're hoping to start landscaping our front yard this year and the family wants more fruit trees. I now have an excuse to head into town...to research what our stores have in stock! Spring needs to hurry up! 🌳

    Did you post a video update on these?

    • @HookedandRooted
      @HookedandRooted  11 місяців тому

      Hi there, I didn't make a specific video for an update on these, however, I did mention them in another video. Unfortunately only the peach tree, and 1 apple had made it to this spring. Since the apple has since died. I only have the peach tree left. It turns out growing from bare root is quite difficult as they are pretty small to begin with. Plus we had a very drought season last year when they were planted. So unfortunately they didn't do to well for me. I'm sure others have had better luck with them though.

    Hi, how are your apple trees doing?

    • @HookedandRooted
      @HookedandRooted  Рік тому +1

      Hi Christina, Not great, only 1 apple still standing, and the peach. It was partly our fault as we had a very drought season, and it was hot. I didn't get to watering them as often as I should have. I think they could have done well if the season had a bit more rain. Then I also had deer chomp on one and rip it right out! My husband and I are looking at purchasing a bit bigger more mature apple trees this season to replace the 2 we lost that were bare root.

      @@HookedandRooted I've bought 5 peach trees and one pear from Home Depot.yesterday. Just planted them today. They are bareroot trees in the nylon bags just like what you bought, but the prices were $28.99 and $ 32.99/ each. The trees have many green branches, taller, and bigger than yours, and they look healthy, But they also pruned the roots too much, so I'm kind of worry if they are going to make it. The trees I bought in the shape fall in the middle range of your bareroot trees and the HD 's $59,99 trees in your clip. I bought bareroot trees before from Abor day foundation many years ago. They were shipped like small dormant sticks with little, dried roots, but the trees were small, not the size of the fruit trees I bought from HD. I think most of them died after the leaf out, since they seemed always weaker.' Now I think planting bareroot trees is not hard, but planting bareroot trees with excessive root pruning is difficult.
      I bought several fruit trees this time because I saw them in good shapes and I just read a few articles lately that said bareroot trees is the way to go. However, the bareroot trees are higher prices, like double the prices last year. Last year, I saw them selling in HD with only $15 -$18/ each just like what you bought ( I live in California). But the fruit tree's roots had pruned too much in my observation that made me feeling uneasy. That was not necessary because the root bags still have much more room comparing to the roots after they cut. I 'd like to know how were your bareroot trees' root system when you bought them. Did they prune the trees' roots excessively too, or the trees still have plenty of roots ? Did they get healthy before the things happened to them? Thank you and you have great holidays.
