    Finally !!! I'm a pro photographer for more than 30 years now and the use of 35mm (ff) or equivalent mft format is that important - at least for my photography. You did a very good job in explaining, why wide angle portraits are so important if you want to work contextual. I'm no headshot-blurry-background friend at all. For me photos need to tell a story and they need to have a context. Therefor 35mm are awesome these days and I use my 17mm Olympus F1.2 almost on a daily basis. Again - thanks for your video and explanation. Best wishes - Andreas

    You have me intrigued with shooting people with a wide angle lens now. I’d love to see another video that goes more in-depth about shooting angles, backgrounds, subject and background spacing, etc. The example photos are good, but it would be interesting to hear more about your thought process.

    I always felt like this was the true "standard" focal length for portraiture. It provides context if needed, doesn't distort too much, and is typically fast enough for hand held low light shots. And you can always zoom in or out with your feet! Oh yeah, nice sample shots Jimmy! 😎

    LOVE THIS VIDEO! I just started using a 12-24mm DX lens on my Nikon D750 full frame camera, giving me a 18-35mm lens perspective and I'm LOVING IT! THANKS FOR YOUR TIPS

    Thanks. Appreciate the discussion . I like both the 17mm (~35mm full frame) and the 20mm M.zuiko lenses for street photography. I like the slight distortion with the 17mm. Still struggle with the super wide angle 6mm & 8mm focal lengths.

    The Olympus 17mm f1,2 is a hell of a lens. Own one too. You can get very close to your subject. Full usable wide open at f1,2.

    Thanks Jimmy. Very revealing. Much of my “photographic” life, I heard that portraits could be done with a standard lens, but real quality was only possible with mild tele (80-100 mm in 35 film format.). The result is that I concentrated less on the characters in street photography with wide angle lenses. The lens was “wrong” for their faces. I am going to follow your advice. 😊

      Cheers Robert and glad you enjoyed my video. Over the next couple of months, I will show you a variety of photos taken with different focal lengths and explain further. I started with wide angle because this is what I love and do often, but of course, I use other focal lengths for different purposes.

    Really, really stimulated my thinking about portraiture. I often shoot my guests' head shots when they appear on my podcast. Now you've got me wondering if I should experiment w using a wide angle lens. Thx!

    So many valid, important bits of information Jimmy... knowing what your lens does to perspective is SUPER important with portraits and otherwise to a bit lesser degree. It took me forever to figure out what lens does what (It didn't help that I shoot 35mm, Micro 4/3 and medium format film with so MANY different lenses) , but now that I KNOW, I'm dangerous!!!

    Hey, Jimi my friend, I'm glad you started creating videos more about photography and art and not so much about gear, I'm sure there is so much that you can share with the world.
    I also love 35mm FF equivalent for my environmental portraits and I use almost all the time my 17mm f/1.2 PRO it's such a unique and versatile focal lenght.

    First thing to do is separate the terms "portrait" and "headshot". Once you do this, wide-angle portraits are more obtainable.
    Every headshot is a portrait, but not every portrait is a headshot.

    Jimmy, thanks for the helpful video. Could you explain in more detail what you mean by “texture?”

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography  2 роки тому +1

      Texture is what 'fills' the space around the subject(s). They are the supplementary details that tells who this person is. They also add visual contrast and interest to the frame.

    • @mne9476
      @mne9476 2 роки тому

      @@Red35Photography Ah ... that makes sense. I might have used a different word. But maybe you can patent the term and become famous 🙂

    I didn't see any examples of the wideangle portraits I like to do. I get very close, often within inches. It usually gets a smile and a fun caricature of the person. You have to have a subject who is comfortable in front of the camera and not too self conscious. One of my personal favorites is of a Marine Corp F-18 pilot leaning on the nose of his plane at an airshow. Too bad I can't post images in a UA-cam comment.

    Great job jimmy, I like your 35mm portrait photo. If for your personal preference, do you think it is good idea to exchange the Olympus 17mm f1.2 to the new OM 20mm. It seems like the new one is more portable.

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography  2 роки тому +2

      Cheers mate. It just solely depends on your needs, I shoot video as much as photos these days, having a manual clutch is absolute paramount for me. 20mm is a great lens, for me, it will be my walkabout/street portrait lens.

    • @hgwong8365
      @hgwong8365 2 роки тому

      @@Red35Photography yes, for myself the new OM is small enough for me to fit in my little beg together with a bunch of Olympus prime, this is what make it fun in mft, I could carry my camera most of the times, with such a sharp len. Is the by wire clutch for manual focus on the OM 20 mm not that perform in video shooting ? All the while I thought it is about the same with the 17mm manual clutch, as long as it could do manual focus 😂

  • @irishrose89775
    @irishrose89775 2 роки тому +1

    Do you think that the wide angle portrait is more documentary than the traditional portrait? It seems that the subject seems relatively small to me. Certainly when combined with more “ traditional” longer focal lengths it provides a tie in to the subjects interests or event. Great video! Be safe and have a very merry Christmas!

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography  2 роки тому +1

      Cheers Caitlin for watching! To me, it's more, 'modern' approach to portraiture. As more and more wide portraits have made it to the finals in competitions. Traditional 'tight' portraits is still there, but it's getting harder to differentiate (from an artistic point of view) from one photographer to other, while wide portraitures has so much more elements to consider.

    I have been looking at that Sigma 16mm f1.4, I certainly don't want to spend 17mm f1.2 money, I tend to really stick to longer focal lengths but, perhaps getting out of my comfort zone and getting closer to the subject wouldn't hurt.

    In terms of designing a portrait of a person, an animal, or something else, I do agree that going wider than just the subject gives some wiggle room to work with for making a meaningful artifact. The background can adorn and accentuate certain features about the subject, and vice versa. Making the background irrelevant through either blur via reducing depth of field or using something like a pure white background puts all of the burden of design or the visual focus on the subject. Whether or not that's desired is a matter of artist's intent and, to a lesser degree, the anticipated reception of the audience. Good video, Jimmy. Thank you.

    The classic portraits lenses for full format are:
    85mm f1,8 or 2,0
    90mm f2,0
    100mm f2,0 or 2,8
    105mm f2,5
    135mm is no classic portrait lens. It's to long, but still usable.
    135mm f3,5 or f2,8 or f2,0.
