    #3 is so right. I know wedding photographers who deliver all photos in colour and B/W, because they're just pressing one button and syncing it across the gallery. Proper editing of black and white also needs to consider all the shades of grey i.e. just hitting a button and calling it a day is just silly.
    Great vid!

      Cheers Jason. Yes, processing is a skill on its own. So many can make a photo but can never process it properly. Something I will talk about in a separate video :)

    Ahh don’t miss the smell of chemicals at all. Do miss the magic of seeing the image magically appear on the the paper! Going into a closet closing the door fumbling with loading the film from the canister on the reel and the praying the pictures came out ok. Digital is soooo much easier! Thanks for the reminders on b&w Jimmy!

      @Red35Photography  2 роки тому

      haha I know, I didn't like the chemical then. But still fun and I could live with it because the process was so enjoyable. I love the waiting too and everything nowadays is instant and also reflects on young people who have no patience.

      I had a darkroom for about 10 years and I never enjoyed printing. In fact it was a bit of a chore, and after being stuck in the dark breathing chemicals for a whole weekend I'd usually feel a bit dazed and queasy for a day or two. I then bought a Nikon Coolscan so I'd develop the film and then scan and print it digitally. Much nicer! btw modern stop bath is odourless but fixer still has that tang that hangs around in your nose for days.

      I remember that magic. And I remember the sense of control, tweaking your image to make it better. When quality digital arrived I felt like a refugee coming home again. I remember film nostalgically but maybe if I went back into a darkroom I'd eventually think this is stupid why am I doing this. : )

    Cool. When I was a young buck learning photography by the seat of my pants, serious photography was black and white. So having roots in that era, I might ask my retired but still-working-fine F3's permission to dabble in some B&W with the new tools and see if it's still fun and interesting. If you're reaching back into your memory and want to adapt your approach thoughtfully and effectively to digital, this video is like a chat with a friend who's done more of that and has some solid advice for you.

      Cheers mate. You have a F3? man, I love that camera. I sold it, together with the FM-3a... and now I really regretted selling them. They were just great cameras, so solid!

      @@Red35Photography Weren't they great? Epitome of a pro camera, built like a tank and did what you needed it to do flawlessly. I swear I miss that focusing screen like it was a departed family member. That camera and I were like an old married couple, just totally in sync. Not selling mine but you can get one for like no money, they just don't go bad.

    Oh back in the days of film you couldn't beat FP4 rated at 100 ASA and printed at grade three on multi-grade. Superb!

    Hey Robin, great video on B&W. I don’t shoot film anymore and it’s not because of lack of wanting. My time is very limited. I’m happy to get out for 1-3 hours per week with less time for processing, so digital all the way. I have 3 Olympus cameras (EM-1 EM-10 mk ii & XZ-2) and few lenses. On all cameras I set one of the custom modes to strictly B&W. During my outings and before I leave the door I decide B&W or colour and there it stays until I’m home. Great fun

    Yeah, the good old fantastic NIK collection....just loving it
    However, I'm right now using a lot of Pen-F monotone profile 2 .
    It's WOW! My models can't get enough of it ;-)
    And no postprocessing needed
    Peace ✌

    I have been using an Olympus Pen F and a Ricoh GR3/2 for several years, I always shoot jpg and raw and have one of my user settings set so that I see A B/W image in the viewfinder….Overall I shoot both Colour and B/W but I think Monochrome can help make you concentrate even more on the subject and composition.

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography  2 роки тому

      Oh yes, I love shooting with my PEN in mono. I also use the front dial and set a custom mono mode. I also shoot both jpg and raw too but most of the time I just use the black and white jpag :)

    Post-processing is not necessary, there are enough possibilities in every newer Olympus camera to work well and creatively b&w. Be it simply playing with the contrast or with the exposure correction. Especially with mirrorless cameras, b&w photography is a lot of fun because you can already see the motif in b&w in the viewfinder, which is an enormous help. I find it a pity that people are often told that you have to post-process in order to get good results. Especially photography beginners can be put off by this dogma.

    Hi Jimmy, you could always insert your camera gear in bubble wrap pouches for extra protection, if you're interested in buying a pouch bag like your mate Chris. Bubble wrap is not exactly weighty stuff.

    Totally agree on Nik (recently upgraded to 4), but I also use DxO PhotoLab 5 Elite for RAW and FilmPack 6 Elite (which is accessible within PL5). Especially good with MFT (my go-to rig is a Lumix G9). DeepPRIME NR is game-changing, so there's now zero advantage (and many disadvantages) to “FF” now, especially if you use long lenses. Film’s still better for some B&W (more DR and silver gelatin beats inkjet much of the time), but there are things you can do on-screen that are difficult/impossible to replicate in the darkroom (plus no chemicals!), so I’m totally digital now. That said, anyone serious about B&W (which blows away color for many shots) should read (=study) all of the Ansel Adams books (especially The Camera, The Negative, and The Print) plus books like Bruce Barnbaum’s The Art of Photography and learn the Zone System! Producing significant images takes time and effort, from previsualization to printing.

    Love shooting my Olympus EM 10.2 and EM 1.2 in Mono mode! I learned on film back in the day - using a Minolta X-700. Had a darkroom in the basement and shot T-MAX for many years as a newspaper photographer in high school and college. Love that Olympus OM Systems offers the B&W native option. Unrelated to the content of this video, is it possible to get an Olympus branded buff/neck gator like the one you're wearing? Thanks for all the great content!

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography  2 роки тому +1

      Nice mate. Often find T-Max a little to contrasty to my taste but it depends on scene though. Sometime, if I shoot in harsh day, it can be quite interesting. The buff is an UK exclusive and they probably don't have it anymore since the rebranding. I should have bought two when I had the chance!

    Well, I'm an artist. I draw portraits in black and white using graphite pencils and I can tell that is not easy, for me at least, to think in B&W. I have to pay attention to some details as: facial expresions, eyes, hair. how to tone the skin, how to make the contrast in a way that the overall image is not too flat and neither with to much contrast. I need to adjust it somewhere in between. When I do a portrait, I need to observe what details can I pop out and what details should be faded out in order to put that person in value. I think the same things applies in B&W portrait photography. We, as an artist, we need to bring out the best of that person and put that in the photograph or, in my case, on paper.

    I have been taking B&W since the 50s and the viewfinder image has always been colour so I cant see me changing now. I never take B&W images now but, often do convert pictures to mono from the RAW file if I think it would improve them. Quite a few of my infrequent art shots are in this category. At times I dont know why I bother as B&W was obviously a compromise in an era when there was no colour; strange we still use it as an art form? But you cant imagine the work of the 20thC masters in colour can you? Jane Bown retired rather than convert to colour and digital; all she ever used was B&W in her Olympus OM1 set to 1/60th f2.8 and natural light. Have fun - winks

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks Vici!! I always love B&W, to me, it's a powerful visual than colours. However, it's personal of course and perhaps I was influenced by many old war journalists and documentary photographers, they somehow conveys more emotions than anything else.

    "Back in the day" , I used Tiffen viewing filters with different filters for different film speeds. As you point out we have it so easy today with out evf showing B/W [EM-1mkiii]. How about some video how -to stories,what settings,log or no log,sound in camera or external, I still find video a bit of a mystery even though I shot and edited Super 16 back in the 70-80's.

    A few years ago I dug out my old yellow, orange and red filters which I used for film and stuck them on my DSLR. I was still using Nikon then and one of my lenses was the same thread, 52mm. The results were awful, all murky and dull. Was I doing something wrong or do coloured filters just not work with digital?

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography  2 роки тому +2

      colour filters won't work on colour digital sensor, but they will work with black and white digital sensors.

    I keep meaning to give B&W a go, but I rarely find a reason to justify its use over colour. What are the best reasons & scenarios for B&W?

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography  2 роки тому +1

      Cheers Brad, got your message too and hope you are well. Most of the people are back in the office now but I do intend to re-start my stream, perhaps in the evening when more UK people are at home after work. The reasons for BW is personal and I do agree certain things are better in colours such as landscape, especially in golden hours. However, long exposure, fine art, street and documentary can be very powerful when using BW.

  • @zhengricky5446
    @zhengricky5446 2 роки тому

    Well, I don't think Chinese people would be fans of bw photos
