Probably one of the best, if not the best, advice about using wide angles in the field with some great imagery (actual evidence) for the advice given. For me it has been your best video so far and I have followed you from the beginning. Carry on the good work and Merry Christmas and a happy new year to you and your family.
I'm an instinct photographer with zero formal training nor schooling. I found my infatuation with photography via smartphones. That being said, your video wasn't over my head and, from more of the artistic perspective and less of the technical, this video made a lot of sense to me and I feel I can take your advice and experience and put it to use. Thank you.
I follow several photography related UA-cam channels but yours more and more turns out to be the best. Very good advice, always to the point. No distractions or bashing. It is simply all about taking better images no matter what brand you use. That is what I appreciate most. Thank you for your fantastic work!
Many thanks, I have a 10-20 mm lens for my Nikon 5300 and have just learned more from this video than I have from any other media in the year that I have owned it.
Amazing how you always manage to have such a high standard on your videos. I have struggled so long time with wide angle compositions and this video made me understand what kind of mistakes I am doing. You and Thomas Heaton are such great inspiration sources for me. I really appreciate your videos and find them of higher value than attending an expensive photo training. Please continue the good work. Merry Christmas.
I follow quite a few photographers on UA-cam and you are one of three that actually presents helpful good information for the normal average person like me and does not have the arrogant attitude about their work and their $30,000 of camera equipment that a normal person cannot afford to purchase
It just occurred to me to think of a wide angle as not so much for getting a wide view of the horizon (left to right) but more of a deeper view from front to back. Thank you! I've been enjoying your videos for a few years.
You made some excellent points here, Nigel! You've earned a new sub :) My favourite part is 12:42-12:48. "Knowing when not to use a wide angle is as important as knowing how to use a wide angle." Absolutely spot on!
This was very useful for me. I have experienced many if not all the issue you covered and you have confirmed things I have discovered, suggested some large and small adjustments, and provided organization in the process of using wide-angle. Thanks for your efforts.
Nigel, Your key things to remember when using a wide-angle lens is one of the best videos I have watched on UA-cam. You have learned from your mistakes and are not ashamed to show them; they have become valuable stepping stones leading the way to a perfect wide-angle photo. I am a Church photographer and use a Z mount 24-70 2.8 mm S in Dx mode. I want to get the occasional wide view photo. I own a Nikon F 20 mm 2.8 prime that was good but not enough reach for structure and altar shots with my Nikon D 750 camera. I am considering the Z 14-30 mm 4.0 S lens for my Z6 II camera. I watched you video to learn how to use the lens. Father Dan
Wide angle lens is my first lens but I've been struggling to use it so I just stopped using it for years. Thank you for sharing these tips. I am going to start practicing again!
Hi Nigel, I have been enjoying your videos. You have shown such breathtaking scenery along with great advice on how to take amazing photos. I went out again today to practice but I live about 40 miles west of Chicago struggling to find any decent compositions. I have a choice of flat lands of dirt, corn fields later and a river. Only interesting thing was some geese with their chicks. However, my husband and I are leaving June 8 th for a week in Ireland, a week by St. Andrew’s Scotland where my daughter and BF rented a castle for family and go golfing. Personally, I’m hoping there’s an engagement announcement. Then we head down to England to visit members of my husband’s team. I’m already panicking that I’m lacking skills in getting sharp depth of field in landscapes or most areas will be too challenging to walk to. Told my husband when we were younger we didn’t have the money and time to travel. Now that he is nearing retirement we have the time and money but our bodies are saying, not so fast.
Thanks for this. I was getting uninspired by my wide angle photos and couldn’t figure out how to improve. This has been really important - must think about all areas of the photo more (the foreground, mid space, and background).
Great video, particularly during these isolated times. You make many excellent points on various aspects of landscape photography which are very important to understand as well. Thank you.
Thank you very much for this video, I always didn't like the wide angle since I couldn't take any good photos with it, and this video opened my eyes and now I understand the concept behind the wide angle lens and know how they work. This was the most educational video about photographing with the wide angle that I found. I will practice now a lot thanks to your tips 🙂
Thanks for this information. The big takeaway for me was being conscious of the middle ground . We now think foreground, leading lines , the horizon and the sky . But yes “ how does the middle ground tie the shot together? Is these too much dead space ? What ties “this shot “ together, completing it . Wanted to make note that in some of your photos with the dead space I see what made you take those. In that dead space I saw light , shadow and leading lines . I think dead space can be used in many ways . Thanks a ton
You have listed all my crimes when I shoot wide-angle landscapes; I have nothing but trouble using wide lenses. This video was extremely helpful in pointing out what I need to do. Now I just have to implement the tips and maybe I'll take something worth keeping.
I think landscapes are best at 35-200mm, wideangle for architecture, stuff like skateboard and diving, street, closeups when you want lots of background
Excellent tutorial. I love that you show the misses as well as the hits - it's incredibly helpful in working out what has gone wrong with my own wide shots.
Really like the way you explain things, really authentic too, a breath of fresh air from the abundanxe of oversell from much less talented people. Thank you :).
The Iceland shot at 8:45 is amazing and one that I would love to just stare at and study. The grass, and middle ground are a mind warper for scale, haven't got a clue on how far away the mountain is. Obviously many amazing shots (ALL) but the one I mentioned above is a STUNNER. Just received my first wide angle, a Sony 14mm f1.8 GM, and I WILL utilize all of your pointers and eventually make something pretty. Tickets to Iceland aren't gonna happen but I'll find something. Thank You. Subscribed and followed on IG!
Greatr information Nigel. I'm preparing for a trip to Ireland and considering which wide angle to bring along with me. 14-24 Nikon f2.8 or 14-30 f4 Nikon. Your suggestions and points about when to use a wide angle lens and when not, are appreciated and well taken. Thank you for the "lessons", I appreciate your points as they are very well taken. 👍📷😎
I love listening to how you simplify photography and sharing your experiences. The tips are so great that I always watch some of your videos as I go out to do landscape. Thanks for sharing mate. Merry Christmas to you too
Right timing, we reside in Perth Western Australia. But off to Austria for Xmas and skiing, with a lot of photography on the journey, with new 16mm lens. Always enjoy and inspired by your videos, thanks for sharing your contagious enthusiasm!
Thanks Nigel for a year of wonderful inspirational and instructive videos. Hope you manage to get a break over Christmas! Very best wishes to you and your family.
The tips were fantastic.. It helps me to understand some things that might help with my landscapes that were lacking.. it was the middle ground and dead space... Appreciate your videos and that you take the time to explain things so well. I also appreciate that you offer this information for free.
Always enjoy your videos as they prove to be informative and useful as opposed to trying to sell something new all the time. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Hey Nigel, really loving your work and education here. At 12:24 besides maybe the right corner what is distracting? I liked how the snow filled trees kinda point up and to where the two mountains meet in the valley and then up the center mountain. Maybe a video on “Spotting (or Avoiding) distractions in landscape photography“
Thank you Nigel, very useful tips. This video let me think how can be beautiful the portrait vision of a landscape. Not easy change my mind, but I'm here to improve.
Great video Nigel. Well thought out to present your concepts clearly with practical advice and real-world examples of what does and doesn't work. Really enjoyed it. Thanks!
New comment for you on my Nikon 12-24mm DX lens on a D7200 camera: Am I the only who has been experimenting shooting with the 1.3 camera crop factor? It now gives me a field of view of about 18-35mm and is GREAT for street photography! ! Also put the lens on a full-frame camera (Nikon D750) and the image quality is a little less, but still good!i
Thanks for the video. A wide angle lens is the latest addition to my small collection. It was a gift and I must say I've kind of struggled with it as it feels like I'm having to look at my shots and the views in a completely different way.. It does require a little more thought and setup. I'll be referring back to this video many times. Merry Christmas to you and yours.
Thanks Nigel. I sure do love my wide angle lens. It's not always the best lens for the job, but nothing gets me as excited as when it's time to pull it out. Excellent tips, happy holidays. Keep up the amazing work my friend.
That was a very good video! Thank you! Especially point #3 was very important in my opinion. Many landscape photographers insist on a huge foreground and then the mountains behind (the thing people actually want to see) become too small and dull. Particularly on Instagram - where you have a small smartphone screen - that is often a problem.
Great job ! Really helpful and very effective and informative tutorial for using wide angle lens. After seeing this video, I have ordered Nikon 16-35 mm f/4 in my arsenal. Thanks ! Nigel for such nice video for your esteem subscribers. Lastly have a merry Christmas and Happy new year!
Wide angle photography gets tricky. Super wide angle can be dastardly. Pulled off correctly? Spectacular! Some of your wide angle scenics certainly fall easily into that category.
Hey Nigeal, your viedos are quite teachable. I'm considering a 12-24 ultra wide angle as well after I retire at the end of this month. Thank you for your viedos. James
Nigel, I'm so glad I found your channel this year. You're an amazing photographer and instructor. Merry (Happy) Christmas & Happy New Year to you & yours. See you next year.
Amazing tips dear Nigel, I'll add themm to my small notes and my small experience 😅. I was always thinking that having an ultra wide angle is everything I want, but when I got it I started to discover how hard to use it, especially with nature or woodland photos, I prefer sometimes the 50mm Lens I wish you peaceful days and Merry Christmas ❤️🙏
@@Kya_the_camera_dog Oh I'm addicted to the forests, but as you said it's really hard, you feel that the branches of the trees are running everywhere in the composition 😂
Nigel, I wanted to thank you for being my best resource for inspiration and instruction during 2019. I have worked hard to improve my photography in this first year of my retirement and my first 8 months with my DSLR. I have purchased your master class and I have voraciously watched and practiced many of your ideas from your youtube channel. I am excited to use your 2020 Calendar in my man cave/photography studio in the coming year. Have a great holiday season and I will see you "next year".
Fantastic video Nigel, definitely a lesson I had to learn was when and when not to use wide angle but hadn't really considered the connecting mid ground element before. Have a great Christmas
I am sorta too lazy to carry all the lenses with me so most often i take the kit lens 28-70mm with my sony a7... it is truly my favorite lens to use for landscape. I know it is not the sharpest or the best, but as an hobbyist landscape photographer i can tell you it is more than you can ask for your daily missions.
Really helpful video this week, Nigel, thanks a lot! As a beginner I haven't taken any decent wide angle shots yet, but this is sure to help when the time comes!
