- Video showing the possible night time tornado that impacted the suburbs of Oxenford, QLD Australia
Update: 04 January, 2024: We are of the strong belief this was NOT a mesocyclonic based tornado, but more likely an area of heavy rain that converged on the leading edge of the storm. This detailed write up by respected meteorologist Anthony Cornelius details how the storm evolved.

The amount of tornado deniers in this comment section is infuriating, it has literally been confirmed by the Bureau lmao.
Yep radar clearly showed hook echoes in multiple locations confirmed by both Higgins SC and BOM at the exact time it hit several different localities. All that's left now is for BOM to confirm was it an F1 or F2 on the Fujita scale? .
@@ChristopherJewelsHopefully the BOM will inspect the damage path and produce a report.
I'm on the ground in the direct path of the tornado alley.... There is a clear line of destruction it's very visible uprooted and snapped trees in a straight line from mount tamborine all the way to the spit in Southport
There is people in 2023 that believe the earth is flat and that Australia doesn't exist. You will always have deniers. Ignore them.
And the bureau used to be able to tell us exactly what time it was going to rain..that same bureau that works for the government. Phuck they would never ever lie to you about anything..guess what, no tornadoes in australia. And there was n9 spin. And obviously your all well educated on watching weather..so totally amazing how micro cells disappeared from australia and is replaced by tornadoes..whats next you going to tell me common colds and flus completely disappeared in 2020 til 2022..and then miraculously reappeared..
We live in Guanaba, base of Mt Tamborine. Came straight over us. Powerlines are still down although the energex hrlicopter came and hovered over our driveway to log it. Shout out to all the AMAZING Energex workers busting their arses to help everyone.
Helensvale got smashed the worst, haven’t seen a single service person since this shit show started.
@@iwe7078don't think Helensvale got hit the worst, the carnage out here is unbelievable. Think Jimboomba and Mt Tamborine got hit the worst.
Yeah don't think Helensvale got hit the worst. The hinterland, Cedar Vale and Jimboomba did
@angel05121 Yeah, we got destroyed. Still no power. Trees everywhere. Really thought my house was going to collapse on me.
I live in Mount Nathan, just outside the epicentre of it. I’ve never seen anything like it in my life, the lightning was apocalyptic and you could hear the wind off in the distance, like a fast-flowing waterfall. Then it hit and the trees just started snapping.
Wow how scarey, hope you're OK 😢
Wow we been having storms like that around us for years, not once did it get called a tornadoe. And better yet it took how long for this footage to hit the net? There would have been high alert on radio n tv informing everyone of it..stupid.dumb ages.
I was camping when this storm happened I was in a cabin luckily but we had to leave early due to the damage of the tornado/cyclone/storm what ever you wanna call it shook the cabin best luck to everyone else in repairing the damage and stay safe.
It has confirmed this was a tornado that hit Gold Coast so very sad I live in Helensvale so many people lost so much. My work big4 holiday park is closed down for a while due to so much danger and damage people lost cars and caravans and we had damage to motel rooms and villas and cabins and our cafe plus so much more. We where getting yelled at by guesses saying how unprepared we where but there was no warning and honestly never had anything like this happened on the Gold Coast
Finally someone calling a tornado like it is! I'm sick of this "there are no tornadoes in Australia" bullshit. What a magnificent storm! Hope everyone is okay❤
In October 2021 there was a confirmed tornado in Armidale, NSW - huge amount of destruction - and a small confirmed one at Brisbane airport that month..
It doesn't help that our media often calls them "mini tornadoes" or "mini cyclones". They're fairly rare in Australia which is why some people think that they don't occur here. Maybe this one will change some people's minds. As for it being "magnificent", I don't think that's what people who've been affected by it are thinking...
There was a tornado in Townsville about 15yrs ago.
@@RodneyAvery-o2q you're so right! As a tornado enthusiast from Australia, and witnessed the 2013 Mulwala EF3. I really hope this storm opens up peoples eyes to tornadoes EXISTING in Australia. I'm sick of the media sugar coating them as "storms" or "mini-cyclone". They're called tornadoes so just call them that!
@@RodneyAvery-o2qirks me how they call them ‘mini tornados’ It’s like that’s as far as they will get with labelling them tornadoes.
We are in Maudsland and the sound of the storm coming down off the mountain was surreal. I was in Brisbane during the 2014 strom and this had the same vibe.
Agree. I was on the outskirts of The Gap storm, 2008. When this storm passed us, the updraft being drawn back into this storm was so ferocious that I actually put out a warning on my facebook page...warning those southward that this was going to be a catastrophic storm. It was so similar to the Gap storm. 130 k winds approx Gap Storm, 144 k winds Brisbane 2014 storm....has anyone said what the wind was in this one ?
Gees
I went through the 2014 storm and this one. Both had that ROAR as they approached. Both terrifying.
i was outside with my family when the tornado came right down on top of us (also in Maudsland)
I live in Yarrabilba. I was constantly filming the insane storm not knowing how close we were to a tornado. Absolutely crazy. I had no idea that could happen here. I saw all the trees uprooted and collapsed powerlines the next day and just thought "that was some storm!".
It’s been confirmed. A tornado touched down around cedar vale/flagstone area and made its way through mt tambourine, oxen ford, paradise point and upper Coomera.
I was driving on Cusack lane just as the thing touched down branch took the powerline out, then turning down sandpiper drive, i had a tree fall on my car with my girlfriend in it, it was quite scary.
I know about at least 6 cars lost so far cedar grove area
Confirmed by whom? Until the BoM confirms it (and they will definitely investigate it), it’s all speculation.
I live just off reserve road in upper coomera right where it borders oxenford and the bottom of mout tambourine where there was the most trees down, there definitely wasn't a tornado but the rain was coming down not in drops it was like bursts of falling water like a waterfall, tried to drop a mate home to pacific pines at 4am and none of the trees had been moved yet, couldn't get more than 5 minutes away driving either way without road being fully blocked. Only just got powerback on, no damage to my house but lost about half a grand of food rotting in the fridge so im grateful.
@@Andy.W94 Hope your insurance covers your food. BoM has now confirmed there was a tornado, obviously this only affected a minority.
@@antysmith606 They confirmed it yesterday afternoon.
I'm 9,800 miles away and as soon as I saw this storm I knew it was a Tornado. Get a clue folks.
We got the very tip of this and for just a few minutes I watched every tree in sight fold in half.
I thought the 3 at the front of my house were gonna snap and somehow they didn’t.
It was hektic.
From someone who was in the thick of it … was 100% a tornado … there’s houses in wongawallan that are levelled and massive gum trees that now tooth picks
Yep we drove through Wongawallen to get back to Guanaba. Drove through Kreidmans Rd, looks like a bomb hit it it.
Just to play devils advocate, the fact that there's severe damage doesn't necessarily mean it was a tornado....
@@TheTruth-DealWithIt ok … well 1. It was confirmed 2. You can distinctly see the path it took from drone footage and 3. Eye witnesses …

we still have no power, probably not for another week. Never seen anything like it here and the damage it’s done, it was crazy constant lighting everywhere and trees falling down.
I was driving through Canungra on my way home to Oxenford. The rain was heavy and trees were falling. I feared for my life. I managed to get home safely, but the power was out. I'm grateful to still be alive.
Pretty crazy looking, interesting way to spend Christmas.
Best wishes and hope all my Queensland friends stay safe and the damage wasn't too bad! From Chicagoland.
I lost power and a trees dfell all through my stareet luckly not on my house but my Neighbours
It was mother natures Christmas gift 🥰
We are in Yarrabilba and id never seen anything like that. I previously lived in North Queensland so I’ve been through a cyclone. The lightning was like the lights in a club. The wind was so unbelievably strong it wasn’t really different from a cyclone. We were all huddled in the living room
I didn't mean to like your comment I was just appreciative, I I hope your all ok, and just remember building codes storm rating on construction and such, even though Bris is a far away from the more repetitively hit with tropical storms in Cairns, all the storm rating up and down the East Coast is the same, so cyclone Yassi was BIG and alot stayed standing after,. Just remember to always leave a window or storm shutters open to equalise the air pressure inside or it might blow a sheet of roofing off or rather suck a sheet or 2 off, if wind is traveling N to S then open a couple of opposing E and W
Front line winds are equivalent to a cyclone. The Gap storm front line winds were rated as a Cat 3 cyclone.
Has anyone found any news sites talking about the tornado? I've only seen Higgins Storm Chasing talk about it
I was staying up in a hotel during it 52 floors high and it was he scariest night of my life❤
I live in woodridge and the storms always miss us but to be honest after seeing what's happened I'm glad we just get some rain and thunder.

I live out west and it came right over us, and I am surprised it strengthen enough to have tornado force winds over the gold coast, wild Christmas.
I live in Logan village and we heard the howling from here but we never lost power and covered in bush all we could see was branches snapping, rain moving all over the place and so much thunder and lightning you could mistake it for a rave
We got lucky, we must have been just on the edge of this. Runaway Bay, Coombabah and Parasite Point got absolutely flogged.
Can confirm in the centre of runaway bay. Everything around us got fucking butchered
Whole house was asleep with an Xmas belly full of food and drink. I'm scared of basic storms and woke up to the wind. Everyone thought I was being dramatic when I said 'this isn't normal!'
Have never, ever been so terrified. Runaway bay area.
Just the cloud shape. We had a tornado experience which is quite different. Hope everything went OK.
Sadly not, a lady died from a fallen tree. Trees smashed through houses, fences and cars. Flying trampolines and debris, roofs were blown off houses 😕 More storms are hitting today with large hail too. Summer in Australia ⛈️

Wow, i live in logan and my mother wasnt worried about it but we didnt realise it was an actual tornado we thought it was just really bad wind and a massive storm till i ran into her room telling her there was a tornado at the gc. Makes me even more terrified of storms now
Seems irrelevant, but on the central coast, on the 9th of December (this year). We had what they called a microburst, but I have footage of a small tornado ripping through, the first one swept through long jetty bateau bay and a portion of the entrance, the second was at 9:00pm and hit parts of Noraville and we were unfortunate to lose part of our roof, our shed was around 150m in the bush land across the road which is behind the neighbours house.
These are unprecedented storms and nothing is likely to explain the scenarios. When you’re a victim of it, it becomes satire when people pretend to tell you what it was, even when you filmed it.
Would you be able to post it somewhere? I’ve been trying to find videos videos of it
@@chloeeglit5494no up in Cairns and there are no videos of this, anything hits the web it'll be pulled straight up, maybe out of UA-cam on the wider net but any internet providers all have govt. regulations using the same condition of vids, it would start a panic people would be heading inland south north or up on a plane, NEW ZEALAND weather hasn't had fresh reports making it here since 25 Dec Chrissy
If it’s anything like the BOM down here in SA, they ALWAYS downplay what really happens.
Sounds like what you’re describing, the “experts” down here would call a “Wind burst” or “Mini cyclone” or the big go-to “A mini tornado”. 🤦♀️🙄
There’s nothing “mini” about clear cut rotation at ground level of a wall cloud that’s rainwrapped.
Thank you for this footage. I have a colleague from Upper Coomera. Her place was in the path. She and her family are okay though
I think you captured a shelf cloud. They precede the downdraft of the storm, as the base of the storm is caught in the winds and push outward with the strong currents and often appear in a curved horseshoe shape. I think you captured the perspective of it from its side. The lightning frequency is something else, thank you for sharing.
higgins storm chasing has confirmed it as a tornado with a 30 minute touchdown time.
@@matsbugs1Is Higgins a meteorologist? No. His only qualification is bulldozer operator who capitalises on sensationalism and preying on a gullible section of the public who really believe he is better at forecasting than university-educated meteorologists who spend years studying this stuff. There is also that element of the public who love to follow anyone who is against government organisations, including the BoM.
And while a tornado may indeed have occurred, this particular footage contains zero evidence of tornadic activity.
I think you're referring to a wall cloud, and either way, as the other person has said, this was confirmed to have been a tornado.
It has been confirmed that a tornado has hit and everyone in that area including me has been referring it to a tornado because of the damage.
@@matsbugs1 Higgins confirms a lot of things. Anything from any actual meteorologists?
Queensland gets the maddest storms”
ENJOY YOUR CHRISTMAS TREES GUYS
I have a good video of it rolling in where you can hear the roar before it smashed us in Riverstone crossing. Worst I’ve seen probably ever.
I was in cedar Vale and that roar will haunt me for a while I think, was walking up a driveway and noticed a distant rumble growing and then heard branches breaking and debris hitting tin and grabbed my wife's hand telling her to run.
Yea mate it happened so quickly. Radar deff didn’t do it justice just looked like another storm we always get on hot days.
@@trdubb2011 I was looking on the radar just before it hit and saw the hook, I only realised then that it was gonna get fucked
@@trdubb2011 Yeah! We are in Oxenford and we could hear the distant rumbling of thunder and could see the constant lightning heading towards us. And we checked the radar and warnings and it said that this was a very dangerous storm and we just assumed it was going to be a big storm. My son came out and said he was popping out to drop his friend home, and my husband and I said no, wait 10 minutes as this storm was close and had a big warning, thinking it could be hail or something. I'd seen the weird bulge on the front edge of it on the radar, and thought it looked strange. Within less than 2 minutes the power went out, the wind picked up and then 30 seconds later heard that whine and the roaring sound, like a plane or train was bearing down on us, it's such a distinct sound and it didn't stop or pause like a normal wind gust. It was just non stop and my husband just yelled at the kids to get in the hallway and get on the floor away from any windows (they were bowing inwards) and we kind of shielded them as this went over us. I could feel the internal walls of the house shaking and vibrating and thankfully the roof held (neighbours not so lucky).. The sound that made as it came over us, I don't think we'll ever forget it. Heaps of the big gum trees over the fence are down, others are now leaning precariously. And then it was gone and it became a normal severe storm. But the speed that thing came through.. Was unbelievable.
I don't live on the Gold Coast itself, but further north and I remember noticing the high lightning frequency of the storm on Christmas night. Little did I know what was about to unfold in the areas that received the worst of it.
It started where I was and I slept through it and it came to coomera where my dad was and he didint care
Idk man. I don't see any debris nor power flashes.
I agree. It's a downburst, straight line winds.
Its bad where we are lots of debris, power flashes etc. People's roofs are gone along with q lot fences and trees etc never have I seen anything like this. The damage is insane
Yeah pal it was like a mini cyclone, if ya weren't there then stfu
You can't have power flashes if you don't have any power to the transformers, the storm likely knocked the power out beforehand. Additionally, Higgins Storm Chasing claims, based on damage and Doppler radar, that it was a tornado that struck the Gold Coast, lasting approximately 30 minutes.
I'd also like to clarify a microburst is also capable of producing power flashes, not specifically tornadoes.
@@mrdoggy8801 if BOM report it was a tornado I'd believe it, but Higgins is known for over hyping things to get more subscribers. Part of the reason I unfollowed. Too much "sensationalism".
this is AMAZING footage. How terrifying.
There was also blackouts for 2 nights and 3 days
Oh believe me. It was a tornado within the derecho event. I went through it (Upper Coomera, just behind Oxenford) and the worst of the damage follows a very specific, narrow path. I lived through quite a few Gold Coast summers and have seen a few storms and cyclones. The Christmas night storm and its swirling intense winds were nothing like I've ever encountered. Seeing images of the doppler radar from that night shows distinct rotation in the wind.
Agree it was a derencho event.
It was like a wall hitting us. Tornado was just a few kilometres south of us. 0
I live near Southport it was crazy that night, but we didn't experience the same stuff a little further up the road. But if I have to say one of the most intense experiences I had come across, was in South Australia back in 2016, where in one day we had 7-8 tornadoes.
we even got to see the imagery of the hook echoes from Higgen's storm chasers.
I live on Tamborine Mountain the Tornado just missed our house. Power was out for 13 days, we were the last group to get power.
No it’s probably the cyclone happening over there but the storm hit where I live in Sydney
The amount of lightning reminds me of those storms in Arkansas.
Yea at first it was a light show but then it just came like a big wall smashing into everything the wind was so strong it broke a door on the opposite was it was coming and upper Coomera somewhere up there 2 power lines fell in half causing an almost 2 day blackout it was insane even a gumtree broke and the worst part is that it was on Christmas
What time of day did it hit?
We still have no power - expected back tomorrow (new year's eve) but another storm is hitting now.
We still have no power in upper coomera, wongawallan and mount tamborine. It's been 5 days and a roasting heat wave of 39 degrees a few days in a row it's been hell

We watch it for hrs building just circling us like an eagle
it was pretty impressive coming from Gundy out west.. one night, either Xmas or boxing day, the storms just kept rolling through. for a couple of hours.
Did a tree blow up in your front yard?? Doesn't look too bad to me!!
I can’t believe there’s no drone footage of the aftermath
😮😮😮, I'm glad it missed us.
The storms are typical, no tornado, that's just a shelf cloud, the main reason for the large amount of damage and power outages are trees blowing over, and there were a lot of storms that covered a large area, energex crews were over whelmed.
I’m in Inverell nsw and we had a crazy storm on Christmas arvo too. I think it was either a tornado or part of cyclone jasper. Whatever the fuck it was it was the worst 5 minute storm I had seen in my life. It wasn’t anything compared to this but the whole town had no power for about 18 hours. There was fallen down trees and powerlines everywhere. It was so scary.
Crazy Lightning Barage !
At flagstone we got a flogging. I wouldn't compare it with a tornado more like a compact cyclone, didn't last as long and had lightning/thunder.
I was driving on Cusack lane just as the branch took the powerline out, then turning down sandpiper drive, i had a tree fall on my car with my girlfriend in it, it was quite scary.
I know about at least 6 cars lost so far cedar grove area
@Nic_B as in the cyclonic wind lasted about half an hour rather than all day.
yea i dont think people realise what an actual tornado is, this was nothing even close.
@@Nic_B no, tornadoes are alot different from a cyclone
On average a tornados usually only last 5 to 10 mins, but they have been known to last as long as several hours.
SLW's from a supercell? Sometimes both SLW and a tornado can be involved at the same time. But this shouldn't be called a mini cyclone at all. SLW's can have winds as high as ef3 tornado.
Hope you’re ok.
A violent hail storm is very rear, its similar with the gusty wild winds but its much more powerful very heavy horizontal rain, and driving large hail, usually very electrical, with loud crack constantly every 1-3 seconds, power is 100% guaranteed to go out almost immediately. The hail and water will smash through the roof and windows into the house and destroy the house. Only a steel roof will stop the hail from coming through the ceiling. It extremely loud too, blasting like a jet, you may never ever experience it, but the storms this year were just a weak mild joke, it can get way worse than that.
Bro, I had it intense at Beenleigh, but tambourine had it worse
I'm in near the river Eagleby Beenleigh in a caravan on property. Whole thing shook. Trees snapped. Never experienced anything like it! Wasn't as bad here thank goodness.
Reminds me of the xmas 84 and 85 storms, but still not as destructive as then, there was a big glass shortage because most of the buildings were smashed by the storms, these xmas storms are nothing like we had in the 80s

Energex workers have been out there for days trying to fix everything.
Lay off the crack honey.
We're in Oxenford, that thing went over us. The only people we've seen has been the Energex staff waiting for council to clear the roads to gain access on Tambo/Oxenford road.. They only showed up today to clear it to allow the Energex staff and equipment to gain access from this end. Kopps road still closed with trees and downed power lines. But we saw the council workers working hard to clear the movie world carpark so the park could open yesterday.. Meanwhile around the corner, we've been putting up tarps and neighbours with chainsaws have been running around clearing roads and we've been helping each other out.
My hats off to Energex.. Every other services? Heh.. Police didn't even go out and man the big traffic intersections resulting in massive accidents daily (they finally showed up today). Council didn't even close some of the roads with downed power lines. Locals with traffic cones went out and did it. That's been our experience in Oxenford since this hit us Monday night. I feel for those on Tamborine and Wongawallan. Their situation is dire.
Tornado went through tugun lifting trees up roots and all .
Did you see the funnel cloud illuminated by lightning?
A Derecho storm (line wind storm) can cause the same destruction. It looks more like a Derecho than a Tornado.

Don’t hurricanes and cyclones form over sea? Not at all similar.
Actually, it was a tornado, confirmed by the BOM
Ok.
We don’t have Hurricanes in Australia.
We call them Cyclones and they form over sea and move inland.
Exact opposite of a tornado.
The weird thing is Australia often sees Waterspouts which are tornadoes that touch down over water.
Loss of power sucks, but, seeing our Energex crews out in convoy in the wee hours of the morning after the storm, makes me appreciate the country we live in.

Not in this video, but there’s evidence a tornado may have occurred
Some "nice lightening" and "some rain" that has destroyed three of my neighbours houses, destroyed bits of ours, 4 of our own cars, blocked off access so we were trapped and had to work in 30+ degree weather to get out for supplies. We heard the screams of those families as they crawled out of the rubble mid storm. They had to leave on foot with their lives in coles bags.

it is/was NOT a tornado. sure there was damaging wind, hail all of the above but no tornado, just a conveniently shaped wall cloud. if it was it would have been National news, but no one even heard a word about it elsewhere. i dont think people realise how strong the winds are in an actual tornado.. either way its only Queensland, we can stand to lose a few of them lol
Oh, another expert
