I came across this quite by accident, thanks so much for bringing back such happy memories for me. This is my "happy place". We owned a caravan in shoreland caravan park and I spent many amazing summers here. Memories of my nan and gramp walking us over the golf links then across the beach up to the harbour, down to the lighthouse where my gramp told me a crocodile lived lol, then trying to pick up the giant metal ring on the floor of the harbour path, going to see the Good Shepherd then an ice cream and then walking past the pickle factory and back to the caravan for crumpets. I love this place so much. Thank You so much.
How wonderful Wayne, that this video has brought back so many Happy memories of your stay at The 'Shoreline' Caravan Park...I've captured several videos around my home Town, if you're interested in seeing more.
@@robmasterman I have looked at a few of them and showed my family. I was watching it the other night and giving directions in my head lol. Thank you so much, I think we spent around 10 summers here and even though i've been back maybe 15 years ago, it was nice to see the power station again, I had a bit of a shock when I went there and saw that it was gone. That's right Shoreline lol, I remember the owner was called Adrian and his wife was Gail but we couldn't remember his surname, do you have any idea what it was? Again, Thank You so much for sharing this video it's meant a lot to me and my family.
The shoreline has been run by two brothers for the last 15 years or so Phil and Julian, I think they took over from their Father. I'm glad you've had so much pleasure from watching my work, I'm proud to call this my home Wayne....it's a very special place.
A great capture of a great moment in time. great place to go to, I go to bury port at least once a year to see family and a walk to the lighthouse. It's not changed too much gladly so. 😍
I've been meaning to comment on this post for the last few months. I just want to say Thank you again for this video. As I've told you before, my brother and I used to spend our summers here when we were children. I shared this video with him on 12th of July this year, and it brought him so much happiness. Sadly 3 days later he died very suddenly. This was the last thing we ever spoke about, and i'm so grateful to you for giving us that special moment that will stay with me forever. Thank You Mr Masterman, you'll never understand how happy it makes me that this video was the last thing we spoke about. Katherine x
Hello Katherine, my sincere apologies for not replying sooner, but I've only just seen you comments. My sincere condolences on the sad loss of your Brother earlier this year, and I'm so pleased that this video of mine has brought you both such pleasure. I have several videos I have taken around Burry Port in my collection, and if you would like me to send some links I would be more than Happy to do so....Very Best wishes....Bob
Thank you for this of course. It looks very nice too so well done all round. It is nice to see old films of somewhere and then compare it with how it is now then if you can do. I do not know the area as I live in Kent although we did go to Swansea and the Gower area when I was younger but I don't think we went to Burry Port or Llanelli from what I can remember. However, an Aunt of mine and her daughter along with her parents did come from there. She later married my Uncle and now lives in Eastbourne in East Sussex-a long way from there of course so too, although also at the sea in a sort of ways, although of course different to there really too.
Thanks for sharing your memories Bruce, the three stacks of Carmarthen Bay Power Station were a landmark from several miles away including Gower. Delighted that you've enjoyed my work...Bob
Thanks for sharing this footage Bob, it brought the memories flooding back, especially how the power station used to dominate Burry Port. I've not gone through all your BP videos yet, but the ones I have are much appreciated.
Bob, Two very distinctive cars feature in this video. The classic and stately Rover 105 and the Dolly. The video certainly provides the experience of leaning on the corners that the Dolly provided. 1989 is not that long ago but I bet there would be more traffic on that same journey today. Thanks for sharing. Regards, John
The Rover was my Brother's car John, he had two a 110 and a 90, not sure now which one was featured here. I had the 2CV, not posh enough to be a Dolly it was one colour. Having said that we travelled all over the Country in that car, and had great fun doing it...Great times...Best wishes...Bob
it was fantastic seeing that power station again, just fantastic.you see, i worked on the power station when it was being prepared for its demolition in 1990.i was there as a labourer, with some other guys, working on the roof,in WINTER WIND,from december 1st,'89,till 28 february,1990,closing the roof windows and helping the carpenters seal them shut because of the asbestos issues there at the time.if ANYONE out there has any film or photos they can upload,i would be SO grateful, especially if they were shot really close to the site.anyway thanks for the video,m8
Thanks Stuart, I'm pleased it's brought back so many memories for you. You may want to seek out a Facebook site called 'Memories of Burry Port' there are many photos of Carmarthen Bay on it...Regards....Bob
Cracking video Bob....wow 1989 seems a lifetime ago. The people in the Rover were with you i'd imagine...but i liked the view from The Citroen 2CV...a cult car....awesome. Gosh i was only 33 then....living in Weston-S-Mare and driving National Holidays Tours.....time flies...Thanks for showing us this Bob....Steve.
Thanks again Steve, my younger brother was driving the Rover, I was driving the 2CV behind.....He's now got a large Lexus, I've still got a Citroen Piccasso.....Nothing changes eh!...Bob
Brought back memories, I used to do a lot of work at the old Grillo Zinc Oxide factory at the opposite side of the harbour from where the video ended. Always used to arrange a visit there for near lunchtime and would buy fish and chips from the chippie near the railway crossing and eat them at the harbour before visiting the Zinc oxide factory, sadly gone as well as the power station.
Having had our first visit to South Wales recently staying near LLanelli It was obvious that a lot of industry has gone over the years. This and other videos show just how much.Very sad.Where will it all end? I really appreciate videos like this. Thank you.
Thanks very much for your comment...the coastal area from Kidwelly to Loughor was heavily industrialised, however with recent development along the Millennium Coastal Path, it's become a beautiful area to visit....Bob
Great nostalgic video. I'd quite forgotten about how much Carmarthen Bay power station dominated the skyline as you drop down from Chivers' Corner. I remember watching as they demolished the stacks by blowing them up - in about 1991 I think. Apart from that and the southern distribution road, I can't say that the landscape has changed that much in the past 25 years.
It's not always about quality Bob... 25 years ago you were behind the camera and probably even longer. Today 25 years on still behind the camera and producing great videos. Having said that looking at the colours on this video are in my opinion of amazing quality. Lovely vintage video, great stuff. Regards... John
Thanks John, this was shot on 8mm video tape on a Sony camera, then transferred to DVD, which lost much of the original quality, still, the 25 year old content makes up for it...Best wishes...Bob
I had forgotten what Carmarthen Bay Power Station looked like, Bob. I have only been there once, back in 1970(ish) on a lorry from Upper Boat Power Station. It also seems strange with so little traffic on the roads, and cars that are now regarded as classics! Very enjoyable...Mervyn
Happy tears,I was born in 1972,it was lovely looking back, seeing the power station was fantastic!! Wish I could find videos like yours! Thanks for making my day!!
Very interesting video! I first went to Burry Port after I moved to Swansea in the early 2000s. That tour from 1989 doesn't show too many differences to how I know the area now, apart from the cars, and the power station - which I don't remember. The 2CV was a characterful car, unlike today's motors which all look the same to me!
Thanks very much, what's amazed me is that other recent videos around Burry Port have achieved around 300 hits, whilst this one has already topped 2,200 in just a few days.....Bob
You've given me some good ideas Bob. I started in August 1986 with a vhs camera from Radio Rentals at £30 for the weekend. Recording family and flights at Southport, ships at Liverpool etc. So like you, maybe an occasional change from railways will be interesting for our viewers. Keep yours coming....Mike
These are done specifically for a local Facebook Group called 'Memories of Burry Port' Mike, and are very popular with the viewers....Thanks as always....Bob
The thing that hits me the most about this video Bob is the cars on the road even a Vauxhall Chevette lol. This was my first year driving Trucks for a living 89 I've seen some changes to areas now sadly I find most towns now all look very much the same as each other, each individual towns have lost its identity.
Fun trying to see how many cars you can identify. I noticed a Triumph Acclaim, a Reliant Robin , several Minis, an Austin Princess, Mk 1 Transits, is that a Mk II Capri (convertible?!) @ 1:55?, ooh, Sierra XR4 or Cosworth @ 2:03... Couple of nice Plaxton Panorama coaches @ 2:50 ... fascinating nostalgia. I presume you were with the people in the Rover P4. I bet that's still on the road.
You seem to be in your elements there Andrei, my younger brother was driving the Rover 110, and may well be still going somewhere, I was driving a Citroen 2CV, a wonderful car, but sadly long gone....Bob
Lovely video Bob, I can only assume much has hanged since then and now. The building with the three chimneys for instance, has it gone? I didn't see it on my journey there, well not that I noticed. I recognised the area around the station though. :-)
Thanks Paul, the power station was demolished in 1990, and was a massive structure that could be seen from all over the area. It was the town's largest employer....not a trace left now...Bob
It makes such an interesting comparison with your recent 'driving' videos Bob. Difficult to believe it's 25 years old. As a Francophile I'm deeply envious of you having had a 2CV!
Thanks Austin, it was a wonderful car, no water to cool the engine, superbly comfortable suspension, which although they looked as though they would tip over when cornering, were very safe, and Citroen said that they would replace the car in the event of that happening. Air conditioning was the side window flaps left open, and you could even convert it into an open top car in the Summer...Loved it Best wishes...Bob
Its nice to have footage from so far back , to be able to see the difference in 25 years Bob , I take it the Rover driver was with you on this , otherwise I WOULD HAVE BEEN A BIT WORRIED BEING FOLLOWED FOR SO LONG , what car where you driving looks a bit Cytron to me ? ...Dave
It's my younger brother driving the Rover in front Dave, I was driving a Citroen 2CV....we were going down the Beach to meet up with our parents for the day...Bob
My local Museum and Heritage Centre are very pleased to get copies of videos like this, They show the locality before the changes and they value that. Have you offered your local a copy?
You're far more sophisticated over there Rob, I sent DVD's to Carmarthenshire and West Glamorgan Councils of the Loughor Bridge developments, and despite having previously spoken to them, I didn't even get confirmation of receipt from either of them....So I won't be doing it again...Best wishes...Bob
I am driving a 2CV Mike, great little car and lots of fun to drive, we did some miles with that one.....My favourite car was still the Morris 1000 Traveller... :o)....Bob

I went on a few family holidays and stayed at Shoreline in the 1970s and in 1981 - when I was 9 years old. We have some cine film converted now on DVD of the dunes and sands. I'm sure there used to be some pylons between the caravans and the dunes? I was looking on Google and can't find any. I remember seeing the power station in the distance when we were there. I guess it was still on-line in 1981 and that they must have removed some pylons since too perhaps.
