I first saw this film on tv when I was about 13 years old. It was a very bad time in my life when I could not find happiness or a reason to live. After seeing it, I was able to find faith that things were going to change and that there was a higher presence where I could find love. Today, 60 years later, I am still grateful for the message of this story.

I totally agree this movie was special! I know without a doubt Christ does exist! There always been spiritual battles between good over evil? Good has always in time won. I wish movies today were still being made as this great movie was! It wouldn't hurt if everyone watched this awesome film!..❤️🙌

Watched this movie years ago. It was at our cottage in Canada. We only had 1 tv station. There had been a bad storm and what little light we had was candle for the most part. This movie came on, the whole family gathered round and watched it. There was not a dry eye in the house at its finish. Save dad. Thank you for posting this wonderful movie. Man that was 50 years ago. Time flies.

Very talented & good looking as well. The rest to decide is up to a person's own unique beliefs or wants , needs & or convictions. Amen& God bless 🙌 everyone !!!

I saw this movie many times as a youngster when it was shown on early NYC TV in 1950's. Loved it so much that with the same name as its leading actor, Robert Cummings, I took the name "Michael" for Confirmation. I also mirrored the boy, Speck, since I was a poor eater, too. The story is entertaining, religious, but not preachy. Looked high and low for a VHS copy but never could find one. Did find many fans of this film tried the same. So glad I could see it again on TCM and here after so many years.

I'm not a big fan of Westerns but this one has a great storyline. With a moral message that's applicable even today!!! The one thing that speaks to me in this film is that the Lord has a destiny/predestined path for His people. As the movie shows, this path is not at all as we might expect. There are unexpected hardships on our path. In these hardships the film acts out our Lord's words: "I will NEVER leave you NOR forsake you." This is a great comfort to the heart.

    • @pamtebelman2321

The writer of this movie certainly had a handle on the Word of God. So many truths here, including when Michael says that death is just like removing an old coat that you don't need anymore, similar to what Paul says about leaving his earthly 'tabernacle.' Even the way they pronounced Michael as "Mika-El' which is the Hebrew pronunciation of that name, meaning Who is like God (El). I mostly liked when he talks about guns being fake power and the real power (the knowledge of God and doing His will) will make you (spiritually) rich beyond your wildest dreams. These are deep spiritual truths that someone who was unfamiliar with what the Bible teaches about these matters would not have been able to explain so well about them as was certainly done here. Aubrey Wisberg must have been a believing Jew, or else was very close to being one. Another truth is when Michael tells Duke that his plans to take over at all costs will never succeed because there will always be another man and another man, and they will join together and they will end your treachery, if you don't "repent and do unto others the same way you want them to do to you.' The pastor made clear that vigilante violence comes from human sinful nature and is NEVER the way of the Lord. This is a lesson that some on the far-right of the American political spectrum need to understand today (or at least those who call themselves Christians among these groups whose threat of a violent overthrow of the government is unscriptural and dangerous).
An all-around lovely inspirational and hopeful movie that makes clear that faith in a merciful God and in the sacrifice of our Lord Jesus is the requirement of reserving your place in heaven and someday, we will we say goodbye to this planet and if we have believed these things, will leave our earthly dwellings behind and receive our new eternal bodies that will live forever with God in a forever-wonderful place that is being prepared for us by our Lord.

Thank you! That made my day. A profound look at human nature and faith. The culture was Christian in those days - even non- believers would not question the societal premises upon which the movie is based: God IS and is all wise and powerful; Jesus Christ was his embodiment on earth; goodness and righteousness are of God, evil and sin from Satan; love is more important than lust...just to name a few...This movie is a wonderful summation and culmination of the wisdom God gave to the "Greatest Generation" - a look at the mass psyche after the seemingly impossible had been achieved - VE &VJ Day...

As my 90 year old mother tells people about the world's condition: "This is what you have left when you reject God." ( The Biblical God Old and New Testament is one in the same). Live in faith accordingly.

More interesting fact. A college student was in our town. He was German on both sides, to the extent that he was very pale with red-blond hairs. He labeled himself as a homosexual atheist.
I thought "Well rather than to debate with him about 'God' I'll give to him some music." I gave to him a double CD with the Brandenburg Concerti. When he played them the room became filled with a distinctive feeling that was the same feeling that accompanied Archangel Michael.
That same feeling I felt in the early 1960s in our Congregational Church a few times, therefore I can infer that Michal was present there and then, although I did not see him.

Due to an error in Heaven, Adam "Duke" Byron, is born without a soul in 1858. The "Book of Destiny" shows that he was supposed to marry a minister's daughter in 1885, two years prior to the present, and set a fine moral example. Instead, he is a saloon keeper and gambling hall owner in Glacier, Montana. As it was the fault of his department, Michael is sent to set Duke on the life path for which he was destined, but Michael must do so as a human being, without miracles, not even a small one.

Thanks much for this. I first viewed this on TV and it (quite surprisingly) kept my interest from start to finish. Finally got to count the number of people standing around that table in the opening scene. Keep your eyes on Gerald Mohr throughout.

This movie is so wonderful with the witty side of it and the good versus evil going on.
I loved how Mr. Treason couldn't keep the "fire' burning..lol...
Adam 'Duke' Byron (Brian Donlevy) will have some good stories to tell his 3 kids.

Short of God sending an angel down like in this movie, the odds of Hollywood would come out with a movie like this would be astronomical. That's because it illustrates redemption... The cross and owning your own c**p. But without being preachy.
I was really discouraged when I started to watch this movie. After watching it I don't feel so all alone.
I know I'm not the only one. For some of us life is not like a Chair full of Bowlies. One would think that Hollywood would like to be part of something positive. But instead they give us poison and tell us it's good.
Anyhow it was a great movie and I think I'm going to watch it again. Along with a pint of Haagen-Dazs and a box of Kleenex.

Perhaps you remember a song called "You Light Up My Life"? Many believed it was about the love a girl felt for her boyfriend. It wasn't! Debbie Boone wrote it to express her love for Christ Jesus! It won the Academy Award for best song.

    • @timothyrawlings2443

It will be more gentle once you pass over in faith in Jesus Christ. The moment you leave you body you will feel more alive then you have ever felt on Earth. You will have your personal welcoming committee (i.e. people you knew in life that passed away in faith of Jesus personal sacrifice for them) waiting for you to take you the rest of the way to your Heavenly Father's throne. To get to this point is not always an easy journey.

What a Gem of a movie! Once the reality of life is realized, and that it's purpose was set before us, that is when we search our heart and change our ways. We are convicted by our conscience, the Spirit of our Creator, so that when we get to the crossroad we are at perfect peace because we stayed the course through Him. \o/

+Dini athome "Hidden in plain sight" is a popular phrase these days, watching this again, I realized that when Duke gives the money to Michael, and he is holding it, looking at the back of the bill says, "ah they will be so pleased with the likeness" hmmmm!
