My husband played the part of Tommy Smith who fought with Eddie. His brother played the part of baby Jesus in the school play. He had fond memories of Bing Crosby.

Bing Crosby was born in my hometown, Spokane, WA. They even named a theatre there, the Bing Crosby Theatre, and there is also a Bing Crosby museum on the Gonzaga campus, which includes one of his Oscar's he won.

It’s all doom and violence from Hollywood films with very poor acting. Even so called Christmas movies are worse than B movies, we now call the D- movies a total waste of time watching them. One by one all the really talented actors and actresses are dying.

I lost my husband almost 5 yrs ago and as Ive gotten older, losing him has become more and more painful. He had always been my strength and not having him with me has been very difficult. We had 45 very good years together.
Ive not enjoyed the Christmas season or my birthday without him. This movie has cheered me up and helped me understand that God hasnt left me alone or without purpose. Ive realized that I need to be here as long as possible for my daughters and 3 grandchildren. I do, still, have a purpose.

One of my favorite Catholic movies of all time. This was back when America still had a soul and loved what was good. In our time no one can understand the love between priests and nuns that transcends any notion of sex. It's emphasis was on practical living our faith. I really like sister giving the kid boxing lessons... It seams that father and sister complimented each others strengths and weaknesses for the common good.

I agree with you that this was when political correctness was not a thought in our national conscience and religion was well respected, and America loved what was good. I totally agree on your take of this movie! Somewhere along the way Hollywood lost imagination, and the actors lost their ability to act. The more C.G., and more skin shown constitutes a great movie in today's world. The more I watch these old movies, the less I like today's Hollywood! The old Hollywood took great stories and great actors and put them together, but always left room for the viewers imagination. Ingrid Bergman was the true definition of a STAR!

Playing a nun here, in 1945, has nothing to do with running away four years later with a most admired Italian director whom, by the way, she married in 1950.
I don’t see any scandal here. Only bigotry from those who never mind their own business.
Actually, the big hypocrisy is that Hollywood made a fuss about it just because she was no longer a money-maker to them, once gone. They are used to pulling the strings of bigotry if needed. That’s plain cynicism. Who’s gonna be fooled by that ? Show business people, especially in Hollywood, don’t believe in anything but cash.
Bergman wasn’t that type. After all, she was from Sweden, and they didn’t understand people like her, obviously. Good for her ! (And well done !)
Black and white is always a better choice than color for closeups (and it provides the kind of distance that favors and allows the dream ...). I wish they shot more films in black and white nowadays, although it’s more expensive ...

Seriously though, generation X, watched it, and had zero clue what's the angle here. Checked some IMDB review, and there's your eye-opener - I had never known about 70 kids in one class room, nor of lethal fires in school buildings, I had heard comments that the nuns could "play in rough" ("just the way it was in those times") from boomers though - go figure! So, it was a necessary movie in it's time! Yet, they are a changing, for better or worse, that's open to subjectivity.

People may say I've been living under a rock to have missed this holiday classic all these years, but better late than never. I love movies of this era and was seeking those with a Christmas theme. This certainly did not disappoint. There is magic in the acting back then: subtle, honest, clear. To say that nothing like this has existed for awhile now is an obvious understatement. This year, at this time, I am grateful to those people who still cherish these precious memories and are kind enough to share them with others like me who would likely never come across them otherwise. God bless, Merry Christmas, and the peace of the season in the New Year as well.

+Frank Frontiera I can relate! My bags were packed, when I was three-I was sat out on the porch; picked up by a Social Worker-at least the beatings had stopped by the one who had sent me packing! Yes; I find life can be inspirational; when hearts relate to one another.

God bless you both. Most of us never realize how lucky we truly were as children. I was blessed with loving parents, adopted by my Great Aunt and Uncle.... but I couldn't have wished for better. I miss them dearly.

"Up to your neck in nuns." Best line ever. Love this movie. Even though I have it on DVD (colorized and in black & white), I just had to watch a bit of this upload. Thanks so much. Just for the record, the movie is best in glorious b&w.

I started watching and got so enraged after 10 minutes of this crap because all I can think about are beaten and abused children, I had to stop. Have to find some Christmas movie without the Catholic pretence of decency.

Beth S It’s so sad that you think that about Catholic schools. I was a little girl who attended parochial school and I never saw anybody hit or beaten or abused. We were educated very well. We were taught to love God and our country. We were taught discipline and kindness. The sisters were very good at moving mountains through prayer and sacrifice. They were very poor and truly knew how to stretch a dollar. We used donated paper that had been used on one side because they couldn’t afford new paper but we learned well. There was never any ugliness, it was the 50’s. My family watched this wonderful movie every Christmas and loved it.

I never get tired of seeing this -- everyone is so great -- and the message of unconditional love and trust is much needed in this world -
