  • Join Shaykh Abdal Hakim Murad for a live Q&A, taking questions on his latest book Travelling Home: Essays on Islam in Europe.
Murad's book dissects the rise of Islamophobia on the basis of Muslim theological tradition. Murad argues that although the proper response to the current impasse is clearly indicated in Qur’an and Hadith, some have lost the principle of trust in divine wisdom and are responding with hatred, fearfulness or despair. Murad believes that a compassion-based approach, rooted in an authentic theology of divine power, could transform the current quagmire into a bright landscape of great promise for Muslims and their neighbours.
Travelling Home: Essays on Islam in Europe describes how everywhere, the far right is on the march, with nationalist and populist parties thriving on the back of popular anxieties about Islam and the Muslim presence, and asks: how should we react to the new Islamophobic movements now spreading in the West?

If only the Ummah had more thinkers like this man! May Allah preserve his health and give him a long life. Allah knows we need such men among us.

Metacitizenship is also what makes us an optimistic ummah. Home is everywhere we go and being a leader in the society we live in is what makes the difference. May Allah bless you Shaikh for being one of those leaders who strengthen the Islam during these troubled times, the same way Umar Ibn Alkhatab did during the time of the prophet ASWS.

Totally agree that race temples are not any good to Da’wa, but how do we get rid of that?

The Shaykh does not really answer the second question about Islamophobia and discrimination. Strangely, he does not want to label anti-inmigration parties as a 'far right' phenomenon. He claims that the 'far right' should be able to appreciate Islam more so than the 'left' which is very worrying since the 'left-right' distinction is a secular western label which is only meaningful in those societies. He avoids talking about which part of the political divide Muslims should embrace which leaves the question of democratic participation wide open. Rather, he maintains that Muslims should avoid both which is not illuminating at all. He does not wish to tackle the question of democratic participation for Muslims in the West.
