I have always honed after to get it as a razor, removing the burr means that it not only lasts longer but also can be used for smoothing especially over knots or fiddle back grain.

Hi Steve, Honing can be a good idea. It takes some time but, as you say, can get the tool razor sharp.
I would be interested to know why that one manufacturer grinds with the swept back profile. May be harder to grind but better in use?
The maker of my wheels warns against using the oneway holder and to use the flat attachment. Anyone else heard of this? Only on roughing gouges.
Cut to the chase and get a Sorby Pro Edge you will save time and end up with a far better edge.
