Gary I also can't eat 200 cucumbers and all the other stuff in a season. Today I packed 3 bags with cucs, cherry toms, various tomato's, peppers, eggplants, yellow squash, etc and hopped on my golf cart and placed the loaded bags on my neighbors front doors. The love me! It's fun to grow, enjoy them and give them away.

I got really tired in August too, just from fighting off all the insects this year and heat. Watering twice a day just didn’t keep them alive. My eggplant, bell peppers, late planted Bush beans and Okra are doing fantastic since it cooled down. Also the Rutgers tomatoes survived everything and still going in Sept! Thanks for the great update, your videos are always so informational.

Gary, have you ever considered automated drip irrigation? I know it might get a bit complicated in a garden as large as yours. But maybe just certain sections that lend themselves to that type of watering?
We got heavy rain that destroyed my beats. Planted over and they are up. Beans and peas are doing great. Got my turnips from you and they are just coming up. Going to put in some lettuce and radishes today and see how they do. It’s still pretty hot though. Really enjoy your videos and they are helping me a lot. Thank you
Glad to help and yep just keep planting. The temps have really pushed my planting back and I just, as you saw, replanted a lot. I moved to a different acreage last October so I have a new garden space. Some of my garden is shaded part of the day by a large tree, I rent so I can't take it out, but I was worried about he amount of sun being enough. Due to the drastic heat and adding shade cloth to my garden I was very happy with the tree providing the shade. I got very tired in August also, watering 2x per day, covering everything so there was shade. But my garden prevailed. Our weather has cooled some so I am hopeful.
I have found its all about watering. I did get disease but managed it well enough. Might be a good time to rezone plants in the garden by water needs & run some zoned drip on a timer system given that drought conditions could become less temporary & more permanent. I began doing this last year. Should have started the transition even earlier. I am also rethinking varieties in terms of drought/pest tolerance.

Gary, Travis at Lazy Dog Farm talks about figs and sells small transplants. You might ask him how to get the figs to produce fruit. Your garden looks absolutely beautiful. All my summer plants got attacked by spider mites and I couldn't keep up with them, because of a back injury. Hopefully the fall garden will be better this year

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN I did use your peppermint oil on some plants but it was so hot. It did work well on the plants. It was just a perfect climate for them, and they just got everything in the garden. I just gave up and decided to wait until fall. Hopefully they're gone for now. I'm starting my fall crops now. Thanks for your help.
I’m still smashing squash bugs in September. I planted the Beit Alpha cucumbers in August and they are flowering nicely. The heat killed my Armenian Cukes!

The good: Every day I am harvesting Blue Lake pole beans, and now my bush beans are coming in too. My Lemon Squash plants and my Yellow scallop squash plants are loaded with flower buds, and my Roma tomatoes are fruiting. The Yod Fah, turnips, and carrots are doing good. Cooler weather is moving into the area, central Alabama, so today I planted kale, Hilton cabbage, spinach, swiss chard, beets, Mizuna, Red Mustard, Tatsoi, and Komatsuna. The bad & the ugly: Pickleworms! They are a seasonal problem in the southeast. I'm fighting a loosing battle. I picked six cucumbers this morning, and every one of them are riddled with bore holes from pickleworms. Neem oil is ineffective as they bore a tiny hole in the fruit, and eat it from the inside out. I've been battling them since August, and am about to give up, pull the plants, and start again next spring. Next year, I am growing different varieties, one of them being lemon cucumbers. Maybe it will confuse the pickleworm moth.
I would try insect dust on the cukes. Its not organic but when you've tried organic and its not working, sevin dust can get things under control. Its not organic. You can try Captain Jacks Dead Bug dust. It is organic. Good luck. @@THERUSTEDGARDEN Yesterday and most of last night we had rain. It didn't stop the moths from coming out and laying their eggs. They lay their eggs directly on the fruit or flower, making ducting a problem, or I would have already gone that route. This morning, I found three clusters of eggs, and smashed them. They are small, translucent white, easily seen in clusters, but not if there are only a few eggs, or the eggs are lain on the side of the fruit where they can't be easily seen. They also effect squash. Pickleworms are a problem in my region, Alabama, and worse in Florida. It may be that I can't grow cucumbers past a certain time of the year. The recommended treatment is disposing of the infested fruit, not in the compost bin. If the infestation persists, dispose of the plants. I(t is too late in the season now to replace the plants with something else, and I am getting more pole beans than I can eat, but maybe Lincoln peas next year when the infestation begins?
@@jaytoney3007 Hi Jay. I am gardening in SC and deal with the horrible pickleworm too. The thing that has worked the best this year is covering my cucs and squash with the sheer/white insect netting that Gary has shown in his videos to prevent the cabbage moth. It is my understanding the pickleworm eggs are laid by a nocturnal moth, so I pull the netting over my plants before evening and remove it in the morning. I haven't had a problem yet this year (much to the amazement of my doubting neighbors), but it is a lot of work. In talking with locals, in the olden days no one would try to grow squash or cucs past the very early summer when the moth comes up from overwintering in florida. Good luck!
@@jenlmcd Thank you for the suggestion .My cucumbers are growing on an arched tunnel made from 16 foot cattle panels wedged between two 4x8 foot raised beds, so covering them with netting would be difficult at best with the net having to be at least 20x24 feet. If I can't get them under control in the next week or two, I am going to cut my loss, and the plants. That will end the cycle for me, this year. The moths do come out at night, during the first 4-5 hours, and light rain doesn't deter them. I wonder if hanging a bug zapper, (redneck tv), and turning it on until midnight will work, weather providing?
I've been looking for that magic regional insect calendar. Everybody says plant outside the pest cycle. I'm never sure when that is because weather can turn on a dime making the cycle earlier or later. Damn.
I love your channel. thank you for sharing with us. If the deer ate all the leaves off my sweet potato plants, will they still grow tubers or should I pull them up and start over?
They will grow leaves back and tubers should form. Mine have been chewed back at least 2xs this year. I put 2 basil transplants into my on the north side of my greenhouse this year. They are shaded by the tomatoes on the south side but get full sun from daybreak until 10:30am. They are now 3 1/2 feet tall and extremely bushy. I take cuttings from them every few days. I can’t believe how big they are getting. My Habanada and Habanero pepper plant are very large and bushy but they are just starting to grow peppers. Is it common for those varieties of peppers to grow all season and start to produce peppers this late?

Is it too late for early potatoes in zone 7? Do you cover then somehow? I had some volunteers in my bed so I moved them to a couple a growbags over the weekend and they are doing well. I'm hoping to get some potatoes but I dont know how late they grow.... im in NJ
So I would just dust the top of the soil and water it in. Grubs look bad but often dont bother the plant. I dont know the exact amount but the spores can take a good year to to do their thing. Is an insect dust more beneficial than a spray bc you can easily wash it off? I bought some sevin spray to have on hand in case of extreme situations. But wondering if I should return it and get the dust instead. Thanks.
I like dust for beetles that run around. I like sprays for chewing caterpillars. Just my preference. Hi. I got some seeds from you and planted on August 24 and 25. Peas, have germinated. Little bit of lettuce seeds beginning and kale? Waiting for onions and spinach to show. Thanks for the information. I live in zone 7 also only about an hour from you closer to D.C. area.

Half of my fall seeds came up. I'm still really new are seed starting ; so now I need to figure out how to do better. Is it to soon to so indoor winter vegetables?
I dont start things for indoor winter gardening. My ground is frozen solid. So I am not sure. Just stick with seeding, you learn fast. Do leave your root pouches out thru winter? If so, do they survive snow, all that precipitation. I am in Michigan and don't want to store 30 of them this year in the garage.
I do. My brother empties his and piles the soil on a tarp for next year refresh and use. Some of my pots have had 3 winters and still are holding. Emptying and storing will add some life to them. @@THERUSTEDGARDEN thank you. I am going to do what your brother does. I look at my pouches as an investment so want them to be useable for a few years. Also don't want them to be homes for voles and mice. Had an issue this year with mice. Sigh.
Thanks. I think the issue is with this variety, they wood dies back due to the winter. However, I have Chicago Hardies and they are producing well as the wood survives year to year. Today, it's 100 degrees F in SoCal. Some of my squash plants look like a vacuum sucked all the fluid out of them, even though covered. Cucumber leaves look like they've been pan fried..... water/no water/cover/no cover......doesn't matter..... Not cool here..... :( PS......Bush beans, determinant tomatoes seem ok, bell peppers have a few spots on some of them, but mostly riding heat wave out :)
Get some dark shade cloth from amazon. I just ordered a large one I can cut in half. I lost all my heirloom tomatoes this year from the heat and burning UV, leaves just burned up! It didn’t matter if I watered twice a day, it was the Sun. It was horrible but I have it for next year. Maybe you can save your plants...good luck!
@@fancythat5136 Got some 30% woven stuff from local nursery couple weeks ago. It is working on my squash planted in big galvanized stock tubs, yellow, patty pad, spaghetti squashes.. But in other container squash marginal. Water 2 times/day & the evening watering is with weak Agro Thrive and Sea Weed Extract liquid fertil. Seaweed "told by local nursery" builds strong cell walls in the plants.....esp. leaves so they are strong and don't pop in extreme heat. Maybe they are right. Leaves wilt, but pop back.....have a great time....keep planting :)

My 1st in the container potatoes r dying off .. no leaves left just ugly stems dying off .. do I leave them in the pot for couple weeks or take them out now
You can do both. You can eat some now. You can dump the whole pot in like 2 weeks. I also leave mine in for 4-6 weeks and just dig as I need them. If they stay too long, they will resprout. Its probably Seven dust or Captain Jacks Dead Bug Dust. Just be careful cuz it kills good and bad bugs. Avoid putting it on flowers. Just the outer leaves and wash off the next morning. I think that's what he recommends. Hope it helps. Good luck.
I had the same question so I I just typed in organic insect dust on Amazon. Quite a variety. See if your hardware store has any of those shown. I use the neem spray and powder. Good luck

Gary, have you ever considered automated drip irrigation? I know it might get a bit complicated in a garden as large as yours. But maybe just certain sections that lend themselves to that type of watering?
Not yet. It would be complicated but you are right on the mark about targeting a specific area.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN I got your book hopin there another soon your welcome and thank you again I ll be watchin
Gary your peppers look fabulous. My crop was a disaster this year, I'm in CT and we had no rain and many days in the 90's.

That is a good idea.

Blackberries. For the love of pete, I can't seem to get those things growing well. I think they hate my yard. :) I am so envious of yours.
Thanks goodnesses because they are my favorite. Mostly clay soil around them really.
I’m still smashing squash bugs in September. I planted the Beit Alpha cucumbers in August and they are flowering nicely. The heat killed my Armenian Cukes!
Yeah I am find squash bugs in new places as I removed squash from the main garden.

Yeah super hots produce much later. Its common

Is it too late for early potatoes in zone 7? Do you cover then somehow? I had some volunteers in my bed so I moved them to a couple a growbags over the weekend and they are doing well. I'm hoping to get some potatoes but I dont know how late they grow.... im in NJ
Also, having issue with grubs in my fabric pots. How much milky spore should I add to 15 gallon containers for fall prep of soil?
So I would just dust the top of the soil and water it in. Grubs look bad but often dont bother the plant. I dont know the exact amount but the spores can take a good year to to do their thing.

New from CaliKim. Why only replies from members?
Perks and Members is just new. I still make like 150 public videos a year and do public live streams. I am just adding a membership element now that will allow me to do lives with less people and more focus on mentoring, if that is what you meant. And thanks for visiting.

Where do you get all the soil from for the raised beds?
Well, I didnt fill them all at once but over the years from bulk dump from landscaping companies, bagged stuff, diggings from my yard, compost and such. Slow and steady.

Today, it's 100 degrees F in SoCal. Some of my squash plants look like a vacuum sucked all the fluid out of them, even though covered. Cucumber leaves look like they've been pan fried..... water/no water/cover/no cover......doesn't matter..... Not cool here..... :(
PS......Bush beans, determinant tomatoes seem ok, bell peppers have a few spots on some of them, but mostly riding heat wave out :)
Nothing you can really do but try shade cloth.

My 1st in the container potatoes r dying off .. no leaves left just ugly stems dying off .. do I leave them in the pot for couple weeks or take them out now
Leave a couple weeks then take out.
Leaves dying back means it's harvest time
You can do both. You can eat some now. You can dump the whole pot in like 2 weeks. I also leave mine in for 4-6 weeks and just dig as I need them. If they stay too long, they will resprout.

If you are asking where, usually nurseries have them now'
You're beds are low, doesn't that hurt your back?
Not yet. But sometimes I just sit down and move at my own pace.

A fig tree bears fruit 3 to 4 years after planting.
Thanks. I am use to the Chicago Hardy most likely that produces faster.

Can someone in the comments or the creator, share the name of the “white Dust” I need to get this at my hardware store but don’t know a name.
Good luck
I mostly use Captain Jacks Dead Bug dust. Sometimes Sevin. they are link on. my amazon shop below.

Tried a garden this year . Unfortunately, the squirrels 🐿 and Rats 🐀 own it .
