It's actually a good thing that your garden isn't absolutely 100% perfect. We get to see what some of our stuff looks like, and learn what to do about it. Especially for beginners, it's important to know what bug pressure looks like, what disease pressure looks like, and all the things that might be trying to pounce on our gardens and eat them. It's good to know what varieties are hardier than others too. Thanks Gary!
You inspired my family and I in many ways Gary. We went nuts in our tiny front yard and pathway and have in turn inspired a mini-movement amongst our neighbors. I appreciate all the time you put into your channel, the knowledge and experience you share, and your honesty. Happy Harvest Season! Love from Boston
So glad to hear. On a side note I am writing a book on edible landscapes. I am looking for photos of lawns to edibles. Not sure if you are interested but we may be able to use some of your photos. That pink flowering tree, that you can see on the far right several plants over from your Gogi berries was just beautiful! I loved seeing the flower beds this week. Your patience with the deer is very admirable, I start seeing them as walking steak dinners 😂

I've heard of making a barrier for the deer out of a 4-6 foot bed of Jerusalem artichoke. Apparently the deer love it and if they can't get past it, they won't go any further.

I had luck earlier this summer running flex tubing through plastic mulch bags and hanging it over my 4' back yard gate, which was one of our doe's entry points. She reacted to it in a big way, leaving behind a strip of fur 14" long as she tried to get away from it, scraping her neck against the metal flourish on top of my gate. I think it worked because it was a real loosey goosey jerry rig with a lot of movement. This kind of set up is probably okay for a relatively confined space like my back yard. For an open area like yours, I think you're going to need a physical barrier. The real problem is that once deer become accustomed to something, they don't see it as a threat. Therefore security lighting, alarms, and even a radio had no effect on our doe, a real city girl who treated my neighbor's yard as a smorgasbord despite all the high tech. But crinkly plastic bags and flex hose that hit back? She'd never seen such a thing before.

My peppers and beans are doing great, especially my pole beans. They are a gift that keeps giving. One of my Bonny's Best tomatoes was too badly damaged to keep, and was pooled. I am considering pulling the other three. My Roma and Dad's Sunset tomatoes are looking good. The cucumbers are a problem-pickleworms! If I can't get them under control, I will have to pull them. My zucchini plants have been replaced with Lemon Squash, and Yellow Scallop Squash. I just sowed seeds for peas, turnips, cilantro, and dill. In the next day or two, I'll be sowing seed for Hilton cabbage, and Swiss Chard. (Central Alabama 7B)
Hey Gary, I just wanted to give you a tip in case you aren't very familiar with having tulip poplars. where I lived for 25 years, in a very small house with a very small yard we had 4 tulip poplars and this is the experience we had. I loved them, but I always said if I planted them myself I would plant them away from the house or any building, and away from where we parked our cars. we lived in Louisville, Ky then and certain times of the year it would literally rain down sap from these trees, which would draw flies. There are also always sticks to pick up out of the yard. They are Beautiful trees and make great shade and grow so tall.
Thanks. Good to know. They would be a good distance off. What are you spraying with? We try to do only organic methods. Soapy water, diatemacous earth, etc. Green horned worms were picked off - 14 total & haven't seen any more!! Squash bugs, 2 or 3 kinds, on everything. We sprayed with soapy water. It helps some. If all else fails, I hunt them down & squish them. Two rows of string a foot apart keeps deer away. They don't like to step in between. Deer damage on sweet potatoes but once we put up string, they have not been back. Your Granny Smith apple needs pruned.

I don't really have a slug problem here, but I've heard that you can put out a cup of beer embedded in the soil so that the lip of the cup is right at soil level and the slugs will drink themselves to death

I’m so frustrated with my green beans. They have been absolutely decimated by something. I was so hoping for a lot of beans to freeze. I’m not sure if they can be saved at this point. And the squirrels!!!! They won’t let me harvest because they are sooo greedy! Had to pull some tomato’s plants and my cucumber finally just dies out do to some sort of insect damage. Positive note is my Okra always does amazing! Asparagus is huge! My kale did amazing until it got too hot! I was able to dehydrate and make powder and freeze a lot of kale. Growing some sugar baby watermelons and I can’t wait to dig for my sweet potatoes!

I have read that beans are not good companions with sunflowers and obviously you prove that wrong my question is how long after the sunflower is growing do you plant your beans to start running its trellis up the sunflowers

Hmmm I grew a homestead tomato this year but was the first to get diseased and is like 2.5 feet tall. I just took note to not grow it again. That plant must not like our northern NH climate. Jetsetter and whopper and polbig doing very well for me. Huge and many tomatoes.

We've just cooled down to the 90s and I've been starting lots of seeds indoors the past couple of weeks. Weather here in OK goes from very hot to very cold so fast that I have to start when it's still really hot outside. I've learned from past experience that I will not get a fall garden to maturity if I wait for cooler temperatures to sow seeds outdoors.
@@teenadamron7654 The only things I've planted out in the garden so far is cucumbers, green beans, peas, and carrots. I've been starting seeds indoors the past 2-3 weeks but after germination take them outside in partial shade. The seeds I've started but haven't planted out yet is kale, collards, lettuce, leeks, dill, cilantro, and bok choy. I plan to pot them in into their own small containers soon and then plant them out in the garden with full sun in 2-4 weeks when we no longer have mostly 90s.
Calcium nitrate is instant calcium. Good to use mid season as a water soluble. Gypsum is good for year round calcium. Most of the time BER is cause by watering issues and Roma tomatoes get it real bad. Use the Discount Code THERUSTEDGARDEN on GreenStalk 'Vertical Tier Systems'. Hello Gary, 👋 how are ya. Nice gardening and cleaning once again 👌. It's awesome about your farm to support school and plants and food donations. QUESTION. I have 5 gal buckets with mulch. Do I take mulch out over the end of fall or leave as is? I have a spot we're I put all my dirt after the fall and re use In spring. Any suggestions. Love ya. Reggie. Chicago style 😎 lol.
One more question, sorry. My watermelon just didn't do anything. In container. I guess I done all I could do. Help. I was looking forward to one at least. Help.
If the mulch is finely shredded you can leave it in soil. If it is bigger chips and such. I dont like mixing that into the soil. I put to the side and reuse as mulch. I would have to know more about the melons but usually they need a large container and lots of water. Excellent ramblings as usual. You said your birthday was tomorrow, but you said today was august 20th. So I don't know if you bday is Saturday or Sunday, but in any case, Happy Birthday!! If your birthday is indeed Saturday, we have the same birthday, so funny. I can't believe it's almost the end of August, the season was hot but felt like it went by quickly.
Thanks! It’s also my first time growing horseradish. I’d read about it as a beneficial companion plant & then happened upon a sad, sale plant at a local farm. Tripled in size the first 3wks. Are you planning on harvesting any of the root?

I noticed in the small garden that you have squash planted next to cucumbers. Along time ago my grandmother warned Dad and I that if you do this, it'll grow and produce, but the cucumbers would be so bitter you couldn't eat them. Have you run into this issue and if not, what variety are you using?

Wow!! 30 butternut squash!! I'm still battling the squash bugs so I can hopefully harvest maybe 5, 😂 !!! What a battle to stay on top of them, so I can have my zucchini, delicata, and spaghetti squashes!!! Everything is looking so good in your garden!!
Get to the eggs underneath the leaves before they hatch, now it's kinda too late the squash bugs comes in cycle, in the beginning I was finding a lot of eggs underneath the leaves, after a while I stop seeing the eggs
@@verawallace9055 thanks for the encouragement! That is part of my routine. Constantly going through all the leaves looking for the eggs, watering to draw them up and out of the plant, spraying with soapy water to kill them.......and REPEAT!!!!!!! Whew!!!! Happy gardening and have a wonderful day!!
@@eileenbartnick7202 you're welcome, I know its a lot of work, but seeing how big the pumpkins are was worth the hassle, also i didn't plant it, it was a volunteer from the compost heap, good luck
@@verawallace9055 Volunteers are always a welcome addition to your garden! They sometimes seem more healthy, even! Especially if they had a great beginning in compost 😉 !!

Hi! I’m in New Jersey 7A and haven’t started anything for fall. Is it too late? If not, what would you recommend? Seed indoors/out? What do I have time for? 😬

Gary do you have a single video explaining different kind of sprays for pests? I’m assuming when you speak of spraying in this video you are referring to H202, I’ve been doing that for my leaf issues and it’s been working great but I’m still fighting some pest issues. I use your Neem oil, peppermint and rosemary mix with soap for caterpillars and aphids and I have slug-b-gone to sprinkle around my young fall seedlings and capt jacks dust for my winter squash stems to try and keep squash vine bore off as well as any other pests. Are there other sprays for common pest problems you’d recommend?

Happy birthday have a good day love the video
Very enjoyable. WOW !! Happy birthday.

My Matt’s wild cherry tomatoes are going totally crazy. Spreading everywhere and they are so delicious.
What are you spraying with?
We try to do only organic methods. Soapy water, diatemacous earth, etc.
Green horned worms were picked off - 14 total & haven't seen any more!!
Squash bugs, 2 or 3 kinds,
on everything.
Mostly hydrogen peroxide. I use dust for insects. Captain Jacks.

I don't really have a slug problem here, but I've heard that you can put out a cup of beer embedded in the soil so that the lip of the cup is right at soil level and the slugs will drink themselves to death
Nice video Gary. What do you use for the spray to battle the yellow and spotted leaves on the plants?
Im using hydrogen peroxide pretty much. It works when I dont miss spray times.

Mexican bean beetle wreck green beans.

I have read that beans are not good companions with sunflowers and obviously you prove that wrong my question is how long after the sunflower is growing do you plant your beans to start running its trellis up the sunflowers
The sunflowers self seed and ofter come up in April. I probably drop the beans early June.

Hmmm I grew a homestead tomato this year but was the first to get diseased and is like 2.5 feet tall. I just took note to not grow it again. That plant must not like our northern NH climate. Jetsetter and whopper and polbig doing very well for me. Huge and many tomatoes.
Too hot here in Southern California,DWP allow us to water out doors twice a week for 8 minutes
Yeah the heat is very different there

So you spray peroxide on your cucumbers? Ill try that out.
I grew one watermelon plant and got 30lb melons off them (5), they didn't taste very nice, not sure what happened, Sandia watermelon, won't grow again, it was the first time planting watermelon. Growing Long Island Cheese pumpkins in that spot this year, first time. Zone 7B high desert.
Could just be the variety. Try some standard tried and trues. Sugar Baby.

All that harvest!! What do you do with it? I thought you were going to cut back on planting this year😂
Hi, Gary. Big fan of yours, and nearby neighbor. When you say you are spraying things such as tomatoes, cukes, etc, what are you spraying with? Thanks, Janet
I use hydrogen peroxide often now a days.

Happy Birthday Gary!!
Please do tell, what are the very large tree/bushes with fusia flowers? Very beautiful!
Are you planting anything outside yet
@@teenadamron7654 The only things I've planted out in the garden so far is cucumbers, green beans, peas, and carrots. I've been starting seeds indoors the past 2-3 weeks but after germination take them outside in partial shade. The seeds I've started but haven't planted out yet is kale, collards, lettuce, leeks, dill, cilantro, and bok choy. I plan to pot them in into their own small containers soon and then plant them out in the garden with full sun in 2-4 weeks when we no longer have mostly 90s.
Gary, to fend off blossom end rot: calcium nitrate or gypsum? I’ve been told from different ppl one or the other.
Calcium nitrate is instant calcium. Good to use mid season as a water soluble. Gypsum is good for year round calcium. Most of the time BER is cause by watering issues and Roma tomatoes get it real bad.

I am going to harvest parts of the roots to test it out but still learning about the growth habits.

I noticed in the small garden that you have squash planted next to cucumbers. Along time ago my grandmother warned Dad and I that if you do this, it'll grow and produce, but the cucumbers would be so bitter you couldn't eat them. Have you run into this issue and if not, what variety are you using?
One year I planted cucumber next to honey dew melons..bad idea the melons were ruined..the cucumber were mostly ok..lol
So not true by my experience.

Do you spray everything with the hydrogen peroxide or different sprays for different plants?
Mainly tomatoes for years but have been covering other plant varieties this year.

Beautiful! Question: I am thinking bout going towers for strawberries. However I have a lot of critter pressure including squirrels. Wondering if squirrels will climb the towers. What’s your advice.
If like to know that also. Right now I have coons and possums getting my baskets of strawberries I took down from the arch trellis.
Hi! I’m in New Jersey 7A and haven’t started anything for fall. Is it too late? If not, what would you recommend? Seed indoors/out? What do I have time for? 😬

SOmething has to be missing in instructions because my seed starts all die. Even the easiest seeds to grow-- arugula, peas, beans, etc have all died. I ended up buying plants at a much higher cost.
Where did you get the large cold frames?
I have same one and got it from Costco online

Gary do you have a single video explaining different kind of sprays for pests? I’m assuming when you speak of spraying in this video you are referring to H202, I’ve been doing that for my leaf issues and it’s been working great but I’m still fighting some pest issues. I use your Neem oil, peppermint and rosemary mix with soap for caterpillars and aphids and I have slug-b-gone to sprinkle around my young fall seedlings and capt jacks dust for my winter squash stems to try and keep squash vine bore off as well as any other pests. Are there other sprays for common pest problems you’d recommend?
