  • Flora Macdonald (1722-1790) courageously helped Bonnie Prince Charlie escape ‘over the sea to Skye’, a story that is one of Scotland’s most enduring legends. After Prince Charlie’s disastrous defeat at the Battle of Culloden in 1746, he was on the run from the British Army and hiding in the Hebrides. Flora took a huge personal risk in concealing him as her maid ‘Betty Burke’ and helping him evade the British, before eventually reaching the safety of France.
But what happened to Flora after this? This film looks at Flora’s heroic act, and then some of the less well-known adventures she undertook. What happened after Charlie escaped and she was arrested for helping him? Why did she help him? And what became of her later in life as she and her family emigrated to America, a colony on the brink of war with Britain?
Watch to discover some of the lesser-known facts about the life of one of Scotland’s celebrated Jacobite heroines.

In tracing my family tree, I found that Flora is my 5x great grandmother. Her youngest child, Isabella, had one surviving child named Margaret. She married William Rose in Petty Church in Inverness before moving to the United States. Margaret is my 3x great grandmother.

Floras help in the escape is not to underestimate, but it was not her plan. She was crucial to the plan because she had the contacts with her stepfather to provide the necessary papers and also women's clothing. But it was Neil MacEachan who has been the mover and shaker of the affair. Also the video sounds like "the whole escape" after Culloden was her plan. In fact the escape took many months and within that she had some days with the prince on the outer hebrides. Like many of the princes' helpers she was caught in the aftermath. But she was spared while others were deported or killed.
Again: Her contribution is not to be underestimated. But it was victorian glorification that made her a heroine by name, while many other names fell into darkness.
Still she is a great gaelic woman.
