Here's an interesting piece of trivia... The Duke of Cumberland behaved with such savage brutality in the days following Culloden that he earned the nickname 'Butcher'. The day after the battle he supervised, personally, the killing of wounded Highlanders lying on the field. At one point his group came upon a wounded Scottish officer, a man of 'quality' and Cumberland ordered a young British officer to kill him. The British officer replied - to a general and a prince - that he "was an officer, not an executioner" and refused the order absolutely. That officer was James Wolfe, who became General Wolfe and who defeated the French outside of Québec in the Conquest, and died at the moment of victory.

Little known fact, in 1745/46 the hessians (hessen-cassel) sent 6000 soldiers to aid the british forces in suppressing the jacobite rebellion. The then heir to the Landgraf, Frederick ll (often confused with KING Frederick ll of Prussia) violently refused Cumberlands orders of carrying out "scorched earths" politics (he was safe from princely wrath, being his cousin, unlike Cumberlands officers) and gained the respect of highlanders (jacobites and loyalists), this being very much to his catholic creed and being amongst the "age of enlightenment" figureheads in europe at that time, later he was scathed for renting out his soldiers to fight the american tax-evaders and slave owners Whashington, Jefferson and Franklin, whilst only allying with Britain against France and Austria in a treaty of protestant powers (remember, he hself was a catholic!) against a catholic power block (catholic France and Spain allied with the protestant colonies!) But then, history is written by the victors... 😅

I think it's a fascinating "what if" of history if Bonnie Prince Charlie won the Jacobite Uprising. There are so many variables: without the Hanoverians in charge maybe Parliament would have been forced to accept concessions under a new Stuart monarchy, or Charles proves so inept that the UK goes to Republican rule having run out of Protestant royal houses. Endless possibilities abound! Thanks for drawing attention to this fascinating time in history.

The Jacobites may as well be called the Jesuits as they continue to pursue the reversal of the Protestant Reformation and a return to the Absolute Authority of the Pope and the Divine Rights of Kings. The Republican CHURCH became the synagogue of Satan -- Revelation 3: 9.

Here's an interesting piece of alcohol trivia... The "Rusty Nail," a drink popularized in the 1960s by the "Rat Pack" (Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr.), is a mix of Scotch whiskey and Drambuie (typically 2:1).
According to legend: "The story of Drambuie began in 1745 when it arrived on British shores under the guardianship of its original custodian, Prince Charles Edward Stuart (known as Bonnie Prince Charlie). It was the Prince’s personal draft, and he drank a few drops each day for strength and vitality. *** Pursued by the King’s men [following Culloden] he fled to The Isle of Skye. After a period of exile on the island his pursuers caught up with him and his fate lay with the Clan MacKinnon who bravely helped the Prince escape the British Isles for good. In thanks for his unwavering loyalty the Prince gave John MacKinnon, the clan leader, the secret recipe to his personal liqueur, a gift that the Clan were to treasure down the generations."
    Slàinte, mes amis.

It was actually Sweet William (William Augustus Duke of Cumberland)'s birthday one day before the battle of Culloden. Charlie hoped that the British soldiers would be drunk, but William Augustus, promised his soldiers he would celebrate after the battle. So during the battle the Royalist soldiers were sober. Charlie wanted to initiate a night attack before the battle but the soldiers practically got lost. When they finaly began the battle, Charlie's soldiers were tired and deprived of sleep and the royalist soldiers were fresh and battle ready.

@@TheKingsofFrance My favorite Jacobite songs are on the Ex Cathedra channel (Welcome Royal Charlie; The Wee German Lairdie; Wha'll be King but Cherlie?)
There are also a number of songs celebrating the French monarchy. Vive Henri IV is fun, but if I had to pick a favorite, it would be De notre jeune Roi in honor of Louis XVII. To me it is the more poignant because of the tragic circumstances of the young king's life and because Louis XVII was the subject of your first video. Musically, the melody or tune is the same one used in other anthems such as God Save the Queen (United Kingdom), My Country, 'Tis of Thee (United States), and Grand Dieu Sauve le Roi (France). The melody has been ascribed to Lully, but this not seem at all certain to me.
